Mr. Cornelius Jongewaard was born in Berkhout Province, North Holland,Netherlands, Feb 17, 1828. He came to America with his father 3 brothers and 1 sister, in 1847 and settled in Pella, Iowa

(From the Pella Souvenir Book of 1847-1922 it is listed that Cornelis came in 1947 and his father Ringert and three brothers, Albert ,Nicholas and Arie came in 1848. No mention of a sister.)

In 1853 he was married to Miss Helena Santenburg in Pella. (The census records of 1850 and 1860 list her name as Ellen S.) Thirteen children were born to this marriage, five of whom died in infancy. Those living were Mrs. J. H. Muilenberg of Hurley SD; Ringert C. Jongewaard; Mrs. H. H. Bogaard of Orange city; Mrs. Herman Spaan Orange city; John Jongewaard of Hurley SD; Mrs. Wm. Sterrenberg Orange City; Mrs. Carl Walhof Rock Valley; and Dr. A. C. Jongewaard.

In 1864, he with his family crossed the plains and resided inOregon for four years, returning to Pella, Iowa in 1868, remaining there for two years. In 1870 he came to Sioux County with his wifeand family, being one of the first settlers of the colony, and residedthere, near Orange City, up to the time of his death in April 8th 1904, his wife died 1899.

Ringert Jongeward (father of Cornelis) was born 15 Dec 1793 Berkhout,Noord Holland, Netherlands, died 1848 at Pella IA. His parents were Cornelis Jongewaard 1751-1823 and Neeltje DeReus 1760-1826. Ringert was first married to Trijntje Water 1794-1822 married 20 Sep 1818 they had children ¬ Cornelis 1818-1826; Geeritje 1819-1819; Jacob1820-1822; Ringert then married Ariaantje Meereboer 1797-1834 Married 2 Jul 1824. They had children ¬ Albert John 1825-1912; Cornelius 1828-1904, Nicholas 'Klaas' 1830-1924, Willem 1831-1836, Ariaantje 1834-1834, after the death of Ariaantje Meereboer, Ringert married Ariaantje Husselman married 19 Jun 1834 born 1805 and died 1836, and they had one son Arien 'Arie' 1835-1869. The brothers of Cornelius stayed pretty much around the Pella IA area. )
