L. D. Satterlee

Loren D. Satterlee, usually called “L. D.” was the fourth son in a family of nine boys born to John and Arabella (Peebles) Satterlee. John and Arabella, with their first three sons came to Iowa from Wisconsin, via covered wagon, and homesteaded on the prairie a few miles SE of the future site of the town of Ireton. At the time Ireton was non-existent, the nearest town for supplies was LeMars, an all day trip there and back with a horse drawn vehicle.

Due to drought and a plague of grasshoppers, John returned to Wisconsin for a couple of years, then returned to Iowa to the homestead place where Loren was born May 27, 1873.

Loren attended country school and later Normal Training School in LeMars, which school developed into Westmar College. Finishing the course in LeMars, he taught school for a year. Teaching not to his liking, he, in partnership with another young man, opened a “photographer’s gallery” in Hawarden with a branch studio in Ireton. It was during this time he met and subsequently married Hulda Klingsporn of Wisconsin.

Hulda was born Aug. 14, 1875, in Dodge Co., WI. She came to Ireton in her late teens where an older sister was working in a private home and obtained the same type of work. Loren and Hulda were married April 29, 1896. He a Baptist and she a Lutheran, they joined the Methodist church and were faithful workers in the church for many years. Both sang in the choir. L. D. taught a Sunday School class for many years and Hulda was a member of the Women’s organization. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow’s Lodge and she a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

A few years after their marriage, L. D. quit the photography business and began working for Ed. Fair, who had the furniture store and was the undertaker in Ireton. Under Mr. Fair’s tutelage, L. D. learned the undertaking profession, passed the State Board and received his license to practice. When Mr. Fair decided to retire, L. D. and his Uncle Byron Peebles bought the business and were partners for a number of years before L. D. became the sole owner. In 1957 he received a plaque from the Northwestern Funeral Director’s Association of Iowa honoring him for more than fifty years service in the undertaking profession. At that time he was the only one in the State of Iowa to have been so honored.

L. D. was active in the development of the town and held various public offices. He was interested in the youth of Ireton, was a member and president of the school board, his objective to hire the best teachers. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, an avid reader, and lover of flowers. In his seventies he suffered a severe heart attack and was confined to bed for months. During that time the furniture store was disposed of, the undertaking business retained with the assistance of his son, Roland. After recovering from his illness he began painting as a hobby. Many of his pictures were scenes from childhood memories.

During Ireton’s Diamond Jubilee in 1961, L. D. reigned as King. Due to failing health Hulda was unable to take part in the festivities as his consort, so the honor went to Mrs. William Taylor.

Loren and Hulda observed their 65th wedding anniversary in April of 1961. In September of that year Hulda passed away and on August 25, 1963, L. D. followed his best girl.

Loren and Hulda were the parents of four children, two sons, Wylie and Roland, and two daughters, Fern and Madge.
