John List, Sr. was born June 20 1841 in Alsace Lorraine, France. He passed away on August 20, 1917 when he was 76 years old. He married Walburga Meyer when she was nineteen years of age. She passed away on September 1, 1932 at Granville at the age of 80.
Mr. and Mrs. John List located at Helena Illinois and in the spring of 1884 moved to the farm south of Granville (now List Century Farm) They lived in the community together for thirty six years. Five girls and four boys were born to the union. Mrs. Margret (Jake) Minten; Mrs. Josephine (Peter) Hittestorf; Mrs. Theresa (Goerge) Callenius; Walburga (died at 13 years of age from diphtheria); Jacob, Married Caroline Kinney; Mrs. Apalonia (Henry) Luberhusen; John, married Gertrude Murphy; Theodore, married Mathilda Lechtenburg; Joseph, married Elisabeth Henrich.
John and Walburga were member of St. Joseph Church and were buried in the cemetery here.

Alton Democrat of Sep 1, 1917 Granville Pioneer Passes Away
John List, one of the early pioneers of the county, was buried at his home near Granville last Thursday. He was born in Alsace Lorraine in 1841 and accordingly 76 years old. At the age of 11 Mr. List came to America and settle at Gelena IL. In 1882 he removed to Sioux County and shortly owned a fine farm of 360 acres, one of the best places in the vicinity. He was married in 1871 to Miss Walburga Meyer.
Seven children and his wife survive. The children are Mrs. Jacob Minten, Mrs. George Cornelius of Granville, Mrs. Peter Hitesdorf of Sleepy Eye MN, Jacob and John list of Alton, Dr. T. S. List of Remsen and Joe List. A large crowd of friends and relatives attended the funeral at Granville, the sermon being preached by Rev. Father Gerleman.
Those present from a distance were Mrs. Jacob Sauer daughter Maggie and son Frank of Darington IA, Mrs. Jacob list and son Adam, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Oldenburg, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hess all of Galena, John Miller of Orient SD, Mr. and Mrs. James Banks and son and daughter of LeMars, Mrs. Jos. Tierney of Remsen and a large concourse from Alton. Mr. List was the last survivor of his father’s family. He had been somewhat a traveler. In early time he explored the gold fields of Colorado and spent several years in Omaha,

Mrs. Walburga List passed away at her home Sept. 1, at 12:45 o’clock. She was born in Alsace Lorraine, France in 1852 and at the time of her death was 80 years of age. At the age of 19 she was married to John list who passed away 18 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. List first located at Helena, Illinois and in the spring of 1884 they moved to a farm south of Granville. In 1905 they moved to Granvllle and deceased has since resided here.
Five girls and four boys were born to the union, all of them surviving except Walbruga and Apolonia. The surviving children are, Mrs. Peter Hittendorf of Sleepy Eye Minn.; Mrs. Jake Minten of Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs. Geo Calenius, Sr., Granville; John List, Alton; Theodore List Le Mars; Jacob and Joseph List of Granville. There are also 26 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren left to mourn. Mrs. List was a member of the Christian Mothers Society and of St. Joseph’s church here. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at nine o’clock with Rev. J. A. Gerleman officiating. Interment was made at St. Joseph cemetery.
