Death 17 November 1865 Dayton, Yamhill, Oregon. Details of his and his wife’s death are uncertain, however, the probate records indicate that a coffin was built two different dates, likely one for his wife Maria, and one for himself. This date is derived from the date the second coffin was made. The death of the parents left the eight children orphans and in the hands of the older one who barely entered the teen years. There are several historical accounts on the Oregon Trail adventure of the Pella Dutch immigrants in the mid 1860s while the Civil War was going on.
Since the youngest daughter of Peter and Marie was Mary Noteboom (Mrs. Dirk Betten), she is recorded (via ancesty.com) as having been born at Pella 1 May 1864, but her death record states she was born in Oregon City Oregon. . The family must have left for Oregon before Mary was born in 1864. Mary died 21 Aug 1957 with no obituary recovered because she had been living in Sioux City where her daughter Mrs. Lawrence lived for many years. She was buried in Orange City.
In the book ‘The Story of Sioux County’ by Charles Dyke in 1942, was an excerpt on the Oregon Trail pages 402 – 412. The account is detailed in pages with heading ‘Childhood In Pioneer Days’ is directed with the Van Der Meer and Noteboom families Oregon Trail experiences. Although some of the families are not detailed in either articles many were definitely in the large wagon train that left Pella.
As far as can be gathered these are the families and people who joined the wagon train for the reason of objecting to being called to service in the Civil War. ‘Live by the sword’, ‘die by the sword’ was their motto. Since they as a group were not naturalize yet, they felt no obligation to serve in the civil, until a mandate was place that all men must serve.
The story told in pages 402-412 was authored by Mr. John Ellerbroek, Mrs. Janna Cornelia Jongewaard Bogaard and Mrs. Mary Ellerborek Hornstra. (The submitter assumes as declared these were children of the original group; the Ellerbroeks and Jongewaards) They could not remember names of the others that were in the original group.
A few lines from John Ellerbroek’s obituary, Mr. Ellerbroek was born in Marion County Iowa in 1852. In 1862 he, his brother Peter age 13, moved with his parents and others by ox caravan to Oregon. They were on the trail for months, suffering all the hardships of pioneers. Indians were troublesome and stole, all but three of their horses. He lived in Oregon until he was 19 years old when he came to Sioux County. Too young to take a land claim, he started a store in Orange City and later moved to Douglas County SD. See his obit on this web page.
Names from pages 402-412 Gerrit Ellerbroek, Cornelius Jongewaard, Geert Jot, Theunes Burggraf; Lutje Mars with DeVries step son, John Stoutenburg, and the Rysdams. Although the submitter chose not to record all the pages verbatim, word for word there were many hair raising events along the way. Along the long arduous journey they encountered many hardships, including Indians, fording rivers, crossing mountains. The arduous journey took about 6 months, with the feet of the oxen completely worn out. Please locate this book and read of all the hardships and experience by the three authors of the article. Although most of the participants of the Oregon Trail returned to Iowa it was found that the family of Geert Jot born 1818 died 1892 Multnomah Co. OR, stayed there and raised a family.
Names from the page 429 and commencing were, the Leendert and Dirk Van der Meer Clan, Dirk Van Den Bos, C. (Christian) Niewendorp, Lutje Mars family including stepchildren, Wopke De Haan, Hannes Klein and the family of Pieter and Maria Noteboom with children. By the time they reached Oregon with their wagons driven by oxen whose hoofs were beat sore they were exhausted. Pieter Notenboom and wife Maria died in 1865 at Dayton Oregon. The eight parent-less Noteboom children were later divided among the various relatives and all grew up to be fine, handsome people. Upon reading the obituaries of some of the Noteboom children the Oregon experience is not mentioned as it was with the Ellerbroek children.
See the research for Pieter and Maria Noteboom which gives their death dates being in 1865 , and possible reason being a fever that invaded the group. They had settled there in about October of 1862 (as related by the Ellenbroek boys) in a swampy area near Dayton Oregon. Submitter read at one point that Arie, oldest orphaned Noteboom child got a cheap sailing ship passage from Oregon around South America to New Orleans and trekked up the Mississippi river back to Pella Iowa with his siblings.
The families that went on the Oregon Trail journey, in great part came back to Pella, and subsequently most ended up in Sioux county Iowa.
NOTEBOOM CHILDREN: The eight orphaned children of Peter and Maria Noteboom who had both died in Oregon in 1865 survived: The father, Pieter’s probate record can be found on ancestry.com, Oregon Wills and Probate Records 1849-1963. His death date listed is included in the papers. This record also state that his wife had died prior to his death. Record does not state where he is buried. At the time of his death, he left the following children per his probate record: Arie 14, Isaac 12, Gerrit 10, Alida 9, John 7 Peter 7 A. (Neeltje) 5, Maria 2,
It is interesting to note that the early children’s life, the harrowing experience of the Oregon Trail ordeal in the mid 1860s that the family went through was not mentioned in their obituaries. They possibly wanted to forget the traumatic experience that involved the deaths of their parents.

10. KLAAS NOTEBOOM ? Ancestry.com public member tree family report has a 10th child as Klaas Noteboom with no dates. Unknown, but possible that a baby was born just prior to Marie Noteboom’s death in 1865.
Observation - The submitter of this biography finds it strange that none of the 8 orphaned children of Peter and Marie Noteboom who died out in Yamhill Oregon in 1865 mentioned anything about their heroic-traumatic Oregon Trail experience about 1862-1869 in their obituaries, was it too painful to talk about and had their children forgotten all about it already? In the late 1870s the Noteboom children were located with relatives, page 431 of the Story of Sioux County states the L. Vander Meer besides his own large family was rearing his two adopted nephews the Noteboom twins. Others possibly went to live with Vander Meers, Noteboom and VandenBos families.
By delving into all the resources it is evident more can be found on that courageous Oregon trail colony. The Pella Iowa Historical Society could be tapped for additional information on the Oregon Trail experience. However, this submitter must move on to other Sioux County biographies. Be sure to read the accounts of other pioneers involved and their children, as Klaas Vander Stoep and Neeltje Noteboom’s biography and the Lutje Mars family, who braved the Oregon Trail, as they come up on our web page at www.iagenweb.org/Sioux - BIOS.
