VanderBroek, Frank 1868-1954 & Marie Van Beek Family

This story was taken from pages 503-504 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Note: the official surname in the Netherlands was Van den Broek, but most descendants seemed to change it to Vander Broek in America.

Frans Vander Broek, who was born in Gelderland, The Netherlands, married Marie Van Beek. In approximately 1896, they immigrated to America, with their oldest son, Gerrit. Frans worked as a day laborer living on several farms in the Maurice vicinity. Seventeen children were born to this couple, four of whom died in infancy. Their children were: Gerrit, Tony, Frank, Ann, Mae, Bertha, Francis, William, Peter, Henry, Dena, Martin and Henrietta.

In 1897, while living just west of Maurice, a cyclone completely demolished their home. Everyone sought refuge in the cellar and escaped with a few scratches.

In 1952, at the age of 85, Frans took his first vacation traveling by car to southern California, with his daughter, Henrietta and her husband Gerrit Riphagen. While in California, they went to Tijuana, Mexico. While standing on the street corner and taking in the sights, Frans said, “Ik zou hier niet willen wonen voor geen vier honderd dollars in de maand.” (I wouldn’t live here for four hundred dollars a month).

Marie passed away June of 1936, at the age of 64, and Frans passed away in 1953, at the age of 86. The only surviving child as of this date is the youngest, Henrietta.
