VanRoekel, George 1888-1969 & Hattie Vander Stoep family

This story was taken from pages 553-554 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

George Van Roekel was born April 8, 1888, at Maurice, Iowa. He grew up in the Maurice area, and was a farmer all his life. He died October 4, 1969, and is buried in the Sherman Township Cemetery. He was a son of Bart and Nellie Van Roekel.

On January 29, 1913, he married Hattie Vander Stoep. She was born October 26, 1893, at Maurice. She died August 15, 1984, and is buried in the Sherman Township Cemetery. She was a daughter of Klaus Vander Stoep and Neeltje Noteboom. They farmed in the Maurice area until 1950. They retired to Maurice, to the former Klaus Vander Stoep home.

They were both charter members of the First Reformed Church in Maurice. Hattie was also a member of the ladies society.

Born to the Van Roekel – Vander Stoep union were six children: Verna (Van Roekel) De Kock, Sheldon, Iowa; Wallace Van Roekel (deceased), Maurice, Iowa;
Mildred (Van Roekel) Reinking, Maurice, Iowa; Esther (Van Roekel) Mieras, Sioux City, Iowa; Howard Van Roekel, Orange City, Iowa; and Shirley (Van Roekel) Dykstra, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

George Van Roekel was born 8 Apr 1888 Maurice IA, died 4 Oct 1969 Orange City IA. He was the son of Bart Van Roekel 1850-1930 and Neeltje Van Peursem 1854-1933. he married Heintje ‘Hattie’ Vander Stoep 29 Jan 1913 Maurice IA.

Heintje ‘Hattie’ Vander Stoep was born 26 oct 1893 Sherman Tsp, Sioux County IA and died 15 Aug 1984 at Sheldon IA. Her parents were Klaas Vander Stoep 1858-1927 and Nellie Noteboom 1860-1951. George and Hattie had six children:

2 Wallace Elroy Van Roekel born 11 Jan 1916 Maurice IA died 23 Dec 1983 Sioux City, buried Maurice IA. He married Arnette Lillian Van Roekel
3. Mildred Johanna Van Roekel born 11 Jun 1920 Maurice IA died 11 Mar 1999 Orange City IA. She married Irwin Frederick Emil Reinking their children Diane Faye Munco, Carl Frederick Reinking.
4. Howard Earl Van Roekel born 29 Oct 1927 Maurice IA died 24 Sep 2007 Remsen IA buried Maurice IA. He married Edith Mae Van Roekel Children – Vicki Sue Van Roekel
5. Esther Rosella Van Roekel born 4 May 1922 Maurice IA died 19 Aug 2020 Sioux City IA She married Howard Charles Mieras
6. Shirley Mae Van Roekel born 3 Feb 1930 Maurice IA died 31 Dec 2021 St. Paul MN buried Maurice IA She married George Dennis Dykstra. Child listed Barbara Ann Dykstra.

OBITUARY OF GEORGE VAN ROEKEL 1888-1969

Services held for Geo. Van Roekel Funeral services for Mr. George Van Roekel, 81, were held Monday, Oct. 6 at the First Reformed Church at Maurice with the Rev. M. Hoekman officiating. Burial was made at the Sherman Township Cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Norman Van Ommeren, Alfred Janssen, Pierce Jansma, Jake Foreman, Ted Smits and Gerrit Riphagen. Special music was furnished by a mixed quartet consisting of Mrs. Jake Foreman, Mrs. Pierce Jansma, James Vlieger and Wallace Muilenburg. Mrs. Wallace Muilenburg was the organist.
Mr. Van Roekel passed away at the Orange City Municipal Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 4, following a lingering illness.

Surviving are the widow; six children, Mrs. Vernon (Verna) De Kock of Orange City, Wallace of Maurice, Mrs. Irwin Mildred Reinking of Maruice, Howard of Maurice, Mrs. Howard Esther Mieras, Mrs. George Shirley Dykstra of Sioux City; 20 grand children and 9 great grandchildren, Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Henry Van Stryland of Orange City and Mrs. Peter Roos of Sheldon; and Two brothers, Ben Van Roekel of Orange City and Ernest Van Roekel of Lynden WA.

OBITUARY OF HATTIE (Mrs. Goerge) VAN ROEKEL (Mrs. Rudolph Van Pelt) 1895-1984

Born: October 26, 1893 Died: August 15, 1984 Mrs. Hattie Van Pelt, 90, died Wednesday, August 15, at the Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City following a lingering illness. Services were held Saturday, August 18 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. Pastor Edward Fikse officiated. Burial was in Sherman Township Cemetery, Maurice, under the direction of the Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City.
Mrs. Van Pelt was born October 26, 1893, at Maurice, the daughter of Klaas and Nellie (Noteboom) Vander Stoep. She married George Van Roekel on January 29, 1913 in Maurice. He passed away October 4, 1969. She married Rudy Van Pelt on June 4, 1970. Most of her life was spent farming in the Maurice area and later retired in Maurice. She lived in the Pioneer Home until illness made it necessary for her to be moved to the Indian Hills Care Center. She was a charter member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice, honorary member of the guild of the RCW, also a former member of the Maurice Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her husband, Rudy; four daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Verna) De Kock of Sheldon, Mrs. Irwin (Mildred) Reinking of Maurice, Mrs. Howard (Ester) Mieras and Mrs. George (Shirley) Dykstra, both of Sioux City; a son, Howard Van Roekel of Maurice; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Arie Vander Stoep of Orange City and Gerrit Vander Stoep of Arizona; three stepsons, Roy Van Pelt of Oregon, Dale Van Pelt and Duane Van Pelt, both of Bellflower, California; a step-daughter, Mrs. Orwin (Arlene) Duistermars of Wellsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, a son, Wally; two brothers, five sisters and two grandchildren.
