This story was taken from page 527 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Gerrit Van Horssen was born in the Pella area on December 6, 1858, to Peter Van Horssen and Cora Van der Bie Van Horssen. Peter Van Horssen was born in Vuren, Gelderland, Netherlands, and came to America, in 1855.
Gerrit was from a family of four children. He had two brothers, Peter and Nicholaas and one sister, Hattie.
Hattie Sompsen Van Horssen was born in the Maurice area, on November 1, 1864.
Gerrit and Hattie were married on March 2, 1882. They farmed east of Maurice. Their children were Anna, born December 17, 1885; William, born September 21, 1883; Elizabeth, born April 2, 1887; Minnie, born October 28, 1890; Peter Hubert, born April 25, 1892; Arthur Edward, born May 27, 1895; and Nellie, born November 5, 1897. They retired in Orange City in 1917.
Gerrit passed away on May 13, 1935, at the age of 77. Hattie passed away March 1, 1948, at the age of 84. They are both buried in the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice.

Gerrit and Hattie were Married 2 Mar 1883 Sioux County IA.
Grada Hendrika ‘Hattie’ Somsen was born 1 Nov 1864 Maurice IA died 1 Mar 1948 Sioux County IA. (see the BIOS of her parents John Willem Somsen 1833-1891 and Elizabeth Ebbers 1828-1910 on this web page) Gerrit married Marths De Vries 1891-1965 after the death of Hattie.

6. Arthur Edward Van Horsen born 27 May 1894 Maurice IA died 11 mar 1967 Bellflower, CA. He married Susan Te Stroete 1896-1935. PIONEER WAS BORN AT PELLA---DEATH CALLS GERRIT VAN HORSSEN AT ORANGE CITY
Funeral services for Gerrit Van Horssen who passed away suddenly at his home Monday morning were held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Reformed Church with Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating.
Mr. Van Horssen passed away following a heart ailment from which he had suffered for eighteen months. He was 76 years old at the time of his death.
He was born at Pella, Iowa, December 6, 1858 and came to Sioux County in 1871. In 1883 he married Miss Hattie Somsen, who with seven children survived. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Van Horssen moved from the farm to make their home at Orange City.
Children who survive are William, Mrs. Anna (Mrs. H. Brink), Mrs. Gerrit Kuiken of Maurice, Mrs. Lizzie , (Mrs. H.K. De Jong), P.H. Van Horssen, Arthur Van Horssen and Nell ( Mrs. Henry T. De Haan).
Interment took place at the Maurice Cemetery.OBITUARY OF HATTIE VAN HORSSEN

Mrs. Gerrit Van Horssen of Orange City, 83, died at 9 A.M. Monday, March 1,, at her home after a long illness. The funeral will be held Friday at 1 o’clock at the home and at 1:30 at the first Reformed Church, with Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating. Burial will be at the Maurice Cemetery. The Van Etten Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Van Horssen, nee Hattie Somsen, was born at Dunxperlo Holland, on November 1, 1864, She came to America at the age of 5 settling at Greenleafton, Minnesota. Four years later the family moved to Maurice where she lived until she moved to Orange City in 1916.
On March 2, 65 years ago, she was united in marriage to Gerrit Van Horssen who preceded her in death 14 years ago. They farmed near Maurice for many years.
Surviving their mother, are six children, William, Anna (Mrs. H. W. Brink), Elizabeth (Mrs. H.K. De Jong), all of Orange City, P.H. Van Horssen and Arthur Van Horssen, both of Bellflower, California, and Nell (Mrs. Henry De Haan) of Orange City. One daughter, Mrs. Gerrit Kuiken, died in August of 1940. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.Picture is from page 527 of the Maurice book.
