Blatt, Nick 1869-1955 & Mary Malget Family

This story was taken from page 65 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Book 1886-1986. It was transcribed by Sarah Theis for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Nick Jacob Blatt was born December 28, 1869 at Palyem, Germany and came to the United States in December of 1879 at the age of ten. He died in May of 1955 at the age of 86 at Le Mars, Iowa. He married Mary Malget on September 14, 1897. Mary was the daughter of Nicholas and Anna Young Maglet. Nicholas was born May 12, 1841 at Rundorf, Luxembourg and died on June 27, 1918 at Granville, Iowa. Anna was born July 12, 1842 at Stegen, Luxembourg and died June 15, 1910 at Granville, Iowa. Mary was born June 23, 1874 at Elkador, Iow. They moved to Granville when Mary was six. She died on March of 1954 at the age of 80 at LeMars, Iowa. Mary and Nick had eleven children:

Catherine Mary-was born October 17, 1898 at Granville and married Nicholas Joseph Didier on August 21, 1932. Nicholas was born July 1, 1898 and died August 25, 1973. They were the parents of six children.
Anna-was born August 30, 1899 at Granville, Iowa. She moved to Le Mars, Iowa and worked at the hospital for a number of years. She still resides in LeMars.
Adella-was born August 18, 1900 and died September 4, 1917 at Granville.
Elizabeth Mary-was born August 23, 1901 at Granville, Iowa and died July 12, 1939 at Fleming, Colorado. She married Joseph T Hoefler on June 1, 1926 at Granville, Iowa. They had five children.
Mathias John-was born July 21, 1902 at Granville, Iowa and died July 19, 1978 at Perry, Oklahoma. He married Elizabeth Wagner on July 29, 1930 at Perry, Oklahoma. Elizabeth was born on March 2, 1912 at Perry. They had two children.
Rose-was born June 19, 1903 at Granville. Sister Rose entered the convent January 11, 1938 at Mount St. Francis at Dubuque, Iowa. Her name now is Sister Mary Rose.
Philomena-was born on July 30, 1904 at Granville. Sister Philomena entered the covent on November 22, 1937 at the Benedictine Convent at Clyde, Missouri. Her name now is Sister Mary Adella. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee at St. Louis, Missouri on September 1, 1979 at Granville, Iowa. She now makes her home at the Benedictine Convent, 3888 Paducah Drive, San Diego, California 92117.
Mary Frances-was born April 25, 1906 at Granville and died March 20, 1978 at Perry, Oklahoma. She married Emil E. Wagner on July 29, 1930 at Perry. Emil was born November 21, 1905 and died January 18, 1984 at Perry, Oklahoma. They had ten children.
Cecilla-was born May 7, 1907 at Granville. Sister Cecilla entered the convent at St. Denedictine at Clyde, Missouri on March 23, 1927. Her name now is Sister Mary Irmina. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee at St. Louis, Missouri on September 1, 1979 at Granville. She now makes her home on at the Denedictine Convent, 8300 Morganford Road, St. Louis, Missouri 62123.
Joseph-was born April 2, 1908. He married Edna Paulson on June 1, 1939 at Granville. Edna was born on February 2, 1918.
William-was born December 4, 1919. He married Luella Anna Kobbermann on June 1, 1940. They have three children and are retired in LeMars, Iowa.

His parents were Hubert Blatt born 21 August 1828 in Germany died 29 March 1911 in Granville, IA and Barbara Young born 17 March 1835 in Germany died 3 September 1916 in Granville, IA. Nick married Anna Maria Malget 14 September 1879 in Granville, IA.

Anna Maria Malget born 23 June 1874 in Elkador, IA died 19 March, 1954 in Le Mars, IA. Anna’s parents were Nicholas Malget born 12 May 1841 in Luxembourg died 27 June 1918 in Granville, IA and Anna Marie Dietrich born 12 July 1842 in Luxembourg died 15 June 1910 in Granville, IA. Nick and Anna had eleven children.

1. Catherine Mary Blatt born 17 October 1898 in Granville, IA died 2 January 2002 in Alton, IA. Catherine married Nicholas Joseph Didier on 21 August 1932. Nicholas born 1 July, 1898 and died 25 August, 1973. They had four children. This is different from the church book notes, however both the obituary (end of bio) and the 1940 census report lists only four children. Barbara (1925-2019) who married LeVern Pottebaum on 7 June, 1944 in Granville. Barbara and LeVern had five children. Mary Ann (1927-2006) married On Aug. 21, 1950, Mary Ann married Arnold Rolfes at St. James Catholic Church 
in Le Mars. They had six children.

2. Anna was born 30 August, 1899 at Granville, Iowa died 6 January 2000. She moved to Le Mars, Iowa and worked at the hospital as a nursemaid for a number of years. She is buried in Le Mars.

3. Mary Adella born 18 August 1900 in Granville, IA died 4 September 1917 in Granville, IA.

4. Mary Elizabeth born 23 August 1901 in Granville, IA died 12 July 1939 in Fleming, CO. Mary married Joseph Theodore Hoefler 1 January 1926 in Granville, IA. They moved to Fleming, CO shortly after their marriage and had six children. Both Mary Elizabeth and her youngest child Amelia died shortly after Amelia’s birth.

5. Mathias John born 21 July, 1902 at Granville, Iowa and died 19 July, 1978 at Perry, Oklahoma. He married Elizabeth Wagner on 29 July, 1930 at Perry, Oklahoma. Elizabeth was born on 2 March, 1912 at Perry. They had three children according to an account on findagrave.com

6. Rose Mary born19 June 1903 in Granville, IA died 19 March 1999 in Dubuque, IA. Sister Rose entered the convent January 11, 1938 at Mount St. Francis at Dubuque, Iowa.

7. Mary Philomena born 30 July 1904 in Granville, IA died 9 March 1991 in St. Louis, Missouri. Sister Adela made first profession of vows on September 1, 1929, and perpetual vows on May 26, 1935.

8. Mary France born 25 April, 1906 at Granville and died 20 March, 1978 at Perry, Oklahoma. She married Emil E. Wagner on 29 July, 1930 at Perry. They had ten children.

9. Cecilla born 7 May, 1907 at Granville died 5 September 2010 in Clyde, Missouri.. Sister Cecilla entered the convent at St. Benedictine at Clyde, Missouri on 23 March, 1927. Her name now is Sister Mary Irmina. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee at St. Louis, Missouri on September 1, 1979 at Granville. She now makes her home on at the Benedictine Convent.

10. Joseph born 2 April, 1908 in Granville, IA died 4 October 1999 in Granville, IA. He married Edna Paulson 1 June 1939 in Granville, IA. They had three daughters.

11. William born December 4, 1919 in Granville, IA died 14 July 1993 in Le Mars, IA. He married Luella Anna Kobbermann on 1 June, 1940. They have three daughters.

OBITUARY of Nicholas J. Blatt 1869-1955

Le Mars, Ia.-Special: Nicholas J. Blatt, 85, a retired farmer, died Saturday at a hospital here after a two-week illness.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic church here. Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.D. Fisch will officiate and burial will be in Calvary cemetery under the direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home.
The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Blatt was born December 29, 1869 in Palsem, Germany. He came to the United States and settled in O’Brien county near Granville, Ia., where he farmed until 1935 when he retired and moved to Le Mars. He married Anna Malget at Granville September 14, 1897.
Survivors are three sons, Joseph of Granville, William of Remsen, Ia., and M.J. Blatt of Perry, Okla.; six daughters, Sister Mary Rose, O.S.F., at St. Anthony home in Sioux City; Sister Mary Adella, O.S.B., and Sister Mary Irmina, O.S.B., both at Benedictine, convent in Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Emil Wagner of Perry; Mrs. Nick Didier of Granville, and Miss Ann Blatt of Le Mars; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Schaul of Roswell, S.D. There are 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anna Blatt
Mrs. Anna Blatt, longtime LeMars resident, passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital on Friday, March 19, following a sickness of several months.
Anna Mary Malget was born June 23, 1874 at Elkador, Iowa and lived on a farm near Granville in O’Brien county until 1955, when she moved to Le Mars.
She was married to Nicholas Blatt on September 14, 1897 at Granville. She was 79 years of age at the time of her passing.
Funeral services were held today, Monday, March 22 at 9:30a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Le Mars and burial was in Calvary cemetery under direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home. Msgr. J.D. Fisch officiated at last rites.
Survivors include her husband, Nicholas, and her nine children: Mrs. Nick Didier of Granville, Anna of Le Mars, Matthew of Perry, Oklahoma, Sister Mary Rose O.S.F of St. Francis Home in Dubuque, Sister Mary Adella O.S.B at Benedictine Convent in Clyde, Missouri, Sister Mary Irmma, O.S.R. of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Emil Wagner of Perry, Oklahoma,; Jet Blatt of Granville and William Blatt of Remsen; also 27 grandchildren, three brothers, Will Malget of Adrian, Minn., Matt Malget of Beaver Dam, Wisc., and one sister, Mrs. Mike Goergen of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Adella and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoefler; one brother and one sister; deceased was a member of the Christian Mother’s Society.
