Smit, Thomas 1862-1940 & Marie Stander Family
This story was taken from pages 494-495 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .
Thomas Smit was born at Province South Holland, in the Netherlands, on December 20, 1862.
Marie Stander was born August 17, 1864, on the Island Flakee, Province South Holland in the Netherlands.
They were married April 27, 1887.
All fourteen children were born in the Netherlands: Adriaantje (Jennie) was born in 1888; Johanna (Anna) in 1889; Pietertje (Nellie) in 1891; Dirk (Dick) in 1892; Pieter in 1893, and he died in 1894; Leentje in 1895; Jacoba (Cobi) in 1896; Lientje (Lena) in 1897; Pieter (Peter) in 1899; Adrianus (John) in 1900; Cornelia in 1902; Leendert in 1904, he died in 1907; Antonette (Jeanette) in 1905; and Leendert (Leonard) in 1907.
On March 18, 1911, they came to America, and lived on farms by Orange City, Newkirk, Maurice, and Perkins.
While living on the farm two miles south and ¼ mile east of Maurice, Dick married Bertha De Jong in 1922, and Peter married Mae Vander Broek in 1923.
They moved to Sioux Center, where Mr. Smit died on October 30, 1940.
Mrs. Smit continued to live in Sioux Center for a couple of years and then went to live with her children. She died September 15, 1950.
They are both buried in Sioux Center, Iowa, cemetery.

Maria Stander was born August 17, 1864 Den Bommel, Oostflakkee, Zuid Holland died 15 Sep 1950 Rock Rapids IA. She was the daughter of Dirk Stander 1834- died 1882 Leiden Neth and Johanna Koppenaal 1835- died1875 Den Bommel, Oostflakkee.

Find A Grave lists Lena Heida born 6 Mar 1895 Neth died 8 Aug 1976 Kandiyohi County MN., buried Raymond MN. Her husband was Klaas Johannes Heida. Children listed were – Lucy Bents, John Heida, Tony Heida, William Heida, Lambert Heida, Marie Tammen.
7. Jacoba ‘Cobie’ Jacoba Smit born 27 Aug 1896 Haarlemmermeer, NH, Neth died 14 Jan 1993 Rock Rapids, IA. She married John Bouwman Dec 22, 1915. He died 25 Feb 1940 Seney Plymouth County IA buried Maurice IA. His wife was Mae Vander Broek. Children listed were Alma Marie Van Roekel, Marvin Thomas Smit, and Harold Eugene Smit. The ancestry family report of public member trees lists Cornelia Smit as born 8 Feb 1902 Haarlemmermeer, N. H. Neth. died 1 Oct 2001 DeMotte, IN. She married John Johannes Dykhuizen 1897-1985. Their children –. In the 1950 census of Dyer, Lake, Indiana their children were Martha 15, Marie 14, Alberdene 13, John 10 and Evelyn 5.
12. Antonetta Smit born 20 May 1905 Haarlemmermeer NH Neth. died 31 Mar 1987 buried Rock Valley IA. She married Cornelious ‘Case’ Van Tilburg in 1926. Children include. four sons, Floris and Emery, both of George, Thomas and Marvin, both of Rock Valley; a daughter, Mrs. John B.(Judina) Vanden Berg of Hull. 13. Leendert Smit born 24 Mar 1907 Holland died 9 Nov 1981 Hull, Sioux IA He married Ester Lankman Hulst in 1973. OBITUARY OF THOMAS SMIT

Friends here all sympathize with John and Leonard Smit in the death of their father, Mr. Thomas Smit at Sioux Center on Wednesday, October 30th.
Mr. Smit had attained the age of 78 years and was well known here, having lived with his sons here for several years.
He is survived by eleven children and fifty-eight grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Charles Arns of Delton, Michigan, Mrs. Richard Reusink of Sioux Center, Mrs. Walter Bauman of Ireton, Mrs. Nick Heida of Raymond, Minnesota, Mrs. Gerrit Baker of Larchwood, Mrs. John Bauman of Lester, Mrs. John Dykhuizen of De Mota, Indiana, Mrs. Case Van Tilburg of Carmel, Dick Smit of Rock Valley and John and Leonard of Hull.
The funeral was held Saturday, November 2nd from the Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, conducted by Reverend Arnoys and burial was made in the Sioux Center Cemetery.

Thomas Smit & Marie Stander were united in marriage on April 27, 1887, in Hoofdorp, Haarlemmermeer.
Fourteen children were born into this family. Two son's passed away while still very young. On March 18, 1911, they arrived in Orange City, Iowa, with their twelve children, and settled on a farm southwest of town. Later they moved to farms near Newkirk, Maurice, Alton and Ashton and lived for a few years in Hull. Finally they moved to Sioux Center where Mr. Smit passed away on October 30, 1940.
Mrs. Smit continued living in Sioux Center for two years with her granddaughter Marie Bouwman caring for her. She then went to live with her children and passed away at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Bouwman in Rock Rapids on September 15, 1950.OBITUARY OF MARIE MRS. THOMAS SMIT 1864-1950

Mrs. Thomas Smit, 86, nee Maria Stander passed away Friday morning, September 15 following a heart attack. Death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Bouman at Rock Rapids. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with Rev. William Bajema of Orange City officiating. Interment was made in the Sioux Center Cemetery where her husband lies buried.
The departed was the mother of 14 children, 11 of whom survive, they are: Jennie-Mrs. Chas. Orns of Delton, Michigan; Anna-Mrs. Walter Bouman of Orange City; Nellie-Mrs. Richard Reusink of Sioux Center; Dick of George, Iowa; Leentje- Mrs. Nick Heida of Raymond, Minnesota; Coba-Mrs. Jno. Bouman of Rock Rapids; Lena- Mrs. Gt. Baker of Bellflower, California; John of Hull; Cornelia-Mrs. Jno. Dykhuizen of Fair Oaks, Indiana; Jeanette-Mrs. C. Van Tilburg and Leonard both of Rock Rapids.
Preceding her in death are her husband who died in 1940 and a son Peter, 40, who died in that year. Two sons died in infancy. One brother, Jacob Stander of Orange City died several years ago as also a sister in The Netherlands.
There are 56 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Survivors also are 2 sisters living in The Netherlands. Mr. and Mrs. Smit lived in this vicinity for many years and since his death Mrs. Smit divided her time living with her childrenPicture on page 494 of the Maurice book will be added.
