Schuller, Dick 1873-1961 & Johanna Kots family
This story was taken from pages 481-482 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .
Dick Schuller was born on August 19, 1873, the third son of John and Adrianna (Dorsman) Schuller in a sod hut in Nassau township one mile west of Alton. At that time it was called East Orange.
His parents emigrated from the Netherlands, in 1869, along with Adrianna’s parents and brothers and sisters, settling in Waupon, Wisconsin. They lived there for two years but were not satisfied there because of all the trees. So they decided to go to Pella, Iowa. In 1871, they left Waupon by covered wagon. They lost their way and went over Spirit Lake, Primghar and Hospers, and then stopped and settled at East Orange, later named Alton.
Dick grew up in the Alton and Hospers vicinity in early 1809, where he formed a partnership with his older brother John, operating a blacksmith shop and enjoyed a degree of success. They patented and manufactured a combination hay rack device which was in great demand.
While here in Maurice, he met and married Johanna Kots (known as Hannah to her friends). She was the youngest daughter of Gerrit John Kots and Hendrika (Hahn) Kots. She was born April 9, 1880, in the Netherlands. She came to the United States, at the age of three years with her parents and older brothers and sisters. Two of her older brothers had gone to the US sometime earlier.
The Kots family settled on a farm one mile south and 1½ miles east of Maurice. It is now occupied by Leo Siege. Grandpa Kots passed away on April 2, 1896, and after his passing, Hannah and Grandma moved to Maurice, to a house which was located across the street from the Reformed church where Dave Kuiken’s house is now.
Dick and Hannah lived with Grandpa Kots for several years and then moved to the Veldboom farm one mile north and ½ mile east of Maurice. Aunt Minnie (Hannah’s sister) came to live with Grandma after that. Minnie later married Arie Punt and they continued to live with Grandma until she passed away on June 22, 1922. Two years later they moved to Orange City.
Here in town Henrietta Margaret was born on December 31, 1910, Ada Gertrude on April 25, 1914, and Richard John was born on the Veldboom place on May 10, 1917.
They lived here for three years and then moved to the Markus farm three miles west and three miles north of Maurice. Here Geraldine Johanna was born on July 21, 1920.
They lived here for seven years and in the summer of 1924, moved Grandma Kot’s house out of town to the farm northwest of town.
Seven years later Henrietta was married to Rhodus De Jager and moved to the Markus farm where she and her parents had lived seven years before. They have five children.
Ada and Richard stayed with their parents, caring for them in their old age. Hannah passed away on September 7, 1946, and Dick on September 17, 1961. They are both buried in the Sherman Township cemetery near Maurice, as well as Hannah’s parents. Ada and Richard continued to live on the home place until the fall of 1975, when they retired and are now living in Orange City.
Geraldine married Arthur Statema and they are now semi-retired. Arthur helps out various farmers and Geraldine helps cook for the Christian school at Ireton, where they now live. They have six children who are all on their own.
