Jansma, Charles 1883-1953 & Anna Schouten Family

This story was taken from page 389 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Charles Jansma was born March 9, 1883. He was one of six children born to Pier and Lempke Jansma. They were both born in the Netherlands. When they came to America, they settled in Michigan, and Pier worked in a factory and raised celery to earn money to move farther west into Iowa.

When Charles was a young boy, his mother passed away and he and his brothers and sisters were separated and were brought up in various homes. Later their father died of typhoid fever. Charles lived with his uncle, John Jansma, who was a bachelor.

On October 29, 1909, Charles married Anna Schouten. She was born in Alta, Wisconsin, on January 20, 1884, and later moved with her parents to the Sioux Center area.

Charles and Anna started farming on a farm owned by John Mahr, 2½ miles west of Maurice. Later they moved into Maurice, and Charlie worked with a dray line in Maurice, and also hauled ice from the West Branch in the winter. The ice blocks were stored in saw dust in an ice house, and were sold in the summer to be used in ice boxes in homes and business places.

Three children were born into their family. The first, a son, died in infancy.

Arnetta was born January 4, 1916. She married a farmer, Wallace Van Roekel. They had two children: Carol and Arlan. Arnetta died of Hodgkins disease on November 11, 1951. Wallace died of cancer December 23, 1983.

Pierce was born January 7, 1919. He married Arloa Brink and three children were born into their home: Sheryl, Kenneth and Mark. Pierce died on January 30, 1984, of a sudden heart attack.

Anna Jansma passed away November 26, 1945, following a stroke. Charles died April 12, 1953, of asthma and heart failure.
