Heusinkveld, Willem 1856-1925 & Alyda Scheevel Family

This story was taken from pages 372-373 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J Vande Berg . See the family story of his brother Hermanus 1847-1932 for more family history background and details.

Willem Heusinkveld was married to Alyda Scheevel in Minnesota, before moving to Maurice, Iowa, in 1890. Willem opened a merchandise store in Maurice, and built a two story house at the south end of Main Street. He financed and started the first Maurice band, playing both cornet and clarinet. In 1893, his business was destroyed by fire.

He then worked as a carpenter and builder, also as a painter and wallpaper hanger. He moved his family to North Dakota, in 1907, but returned to Maurice, in 1911, and opened the Heusinkveld Mercantile Co. It, too, was destroyed by fire when the entire business block was burned. In 1913, he built a cement block building to house the store. In addition to the above occupations, Willem also was a bee-keeper. He died in 1925, due to a stroke caused by lead poisoning.

Alyda was a milliner, seamstress and helped line the homemade caskets. In 1929, she moved to Annville, Kentucky, to live with her daughters, Emily and Zilda. She lived with them until her death in 1956, at the age of 98.

Willem and Alyda had nine children all of whom lived in Maurice until marriage. They were:

Effie who was the oldest, born in 1880. She married John M. Mieras in 1906, and they had one daughter. John M. was born in Zeeland, Netherlands, and after arriving in Maurice, he became the rural mail carrier and made cement blocks in the afternoon. Effie, before her marriage, was a postal clerk. After her husband’s death she moved to Kentucky, and later to Florida, and lived with her sisters. In 1965, she moved to Ocheyedan to live with her daughter. She died at the age of 93.

Alvin was the second child and he clerked in the store, was a paper hanger, painter, farmer and finally purchased a locker plant in Paullina, Iowa. He married Hilda De Young of LeMars, Iowa, and they had six children. Alvin died at the age of 92.

Benjamin, the third child, was also a paper hanger and painter until he was injured in an accident. He then attended Morningside College and became a barber. He married Fannie Usher of Primghar, Iowa, and they had five children. They made their home in Sioux City. Ben died at the age of 84.

Josie was the fourth child and married Elmer Kukuk who was a farmer. For a time Josie worked in the laundry at the air base in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She and Elmer had five children and she died at age 92.

Minnie was the fifth child and married John Kukuk after she taught school in Jamestown, North Dakota, and rural school in Maurice. She attended Morningside College prior to teaching school. John was a mail carrier, carpenter and later went into the laundry business in Rapid City, South Dakota. They had five children. Minnie was 89 years old when she died.

The sixth child was Mabel who managed the family owned business until her marriage to Ralph Mieras, a widower with children. Ralph and Mabel had two daughters and they moved to Annville, Kentucky, to work at the Institute where Ralph taught mechanics. He was killed in an accident and Mabel raised the family and did relief work at the Institute, supervised a memorial garden and headed the Sunday School Primary Department. After retirement she moved to Florida, with her sisters and died there at the age of 90.

Emily, the seventh child, attended Mankato Business College in Minnesota, and became the bookkeeper and secretary for the founder, minister and superintendent of the Annville Institute in Kentucky.

Zilda, the eighth child, attended Iowa State College and became the principal of the school at the Institute. The two sisters and their mother lived in Annville, until the sisters retirement when they moved to St. Cloud, Florida, where they were active in church work until their deaths at 92 and 90. In 1956, the Annville Institute dedicated a building to the three sisters, named it Heusinkveld Hall stating: “Some artists leave their contributions to life on canvas, other in marble, but theirs is found in the souls of men and women”.

The last child, Clifford, is listed separately on page 372 (in the Maurice book) with his family.
Synopsis added here by submitted – Clifford L. Heusinkveld was born 1900 – 1957. He took over the general merchandise store which he later purchased and ran. He lived at Maurce and was active in School, town and church affairs. Later he moved to Melbourne FL. He married Frances Ostlund. The couple had four children; Floyd died at three months of age. The other children were Beverly, Clair and Karen.
