This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 215. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Schumacher, Nicholas 1883- 1961 and Mary Meyer Family

Nicholas Schumacher was born June 2, 1883 at Kundorf, Luxemburg, and came to the United States in 1907. He was at Alton a short time, then went west to the Indian Mission at St. Ignatius, returning to Alton in 1911.

He purchased the Peter Kaas blacksmith shop with his brother Henry, and continued to as sole owner after Henry’s death.

Nic Schumacher married Mary Meyer on January 23, 1911, and the couple lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding, but Mr. Schumacher passed away on Feb. 3, 1961.

The couple had six children: Madeline, who was killed in auto accident in 1939, Rev. George, Leo, Dr. Peter, Oscar and Rev. Anthony.

Mr. Schumacher was a trustee of St. Mary’s for many years, and sang in the choir for 45 years.

Mrs. Schumacher continued to make her home with her son, Oscar, who continued the father’s blacksmith business. Mrs. Schumacher passed away January 1, 1969, at the age of 80.

The remaining members of the family are Oscar of Alton, Peter of Le Mars, and Rev. Anthony of Wisconsin.

He was the son of Nicolas Schumacher 1844-1901 and Anna Beringer 1842-1894. He married 23 Jan 1911 Granville, Iowa to Maria Meyers

Maria Meyers was born 23 Dec 1888 Kaundorf, Diekirch, Luxembourg and died 14 Jan 1969 Alton IA. Her parents were Martin Meyers 1853-1922 and Margareta Majerus 1856-1940. Nic and Maria had the following children.

IMPRESSIVE RITES AT ALTON IN MEMORY OF NICK SCHUMACHER
Nicholas “Nick” Schumacher, one of Alton’s earliest and most respected business men, died at his home Friday night, February 3rd, after an illness of several months.

He was born June 2, 1883 at Kundorf, Luxembourg, and came to the United States in the year 1907. He was at Alton for a short time, then went west to the Indian Mission at St. Ignatius, returning to Alton in 1910, when he purchased the Peter Kass blacksmith shop in partnership with his brother Henry. After the death of the latter, he became sole owner and was a skilled artisan known far and wide for his reliable work. In recent years his son Oscar joined him in the shop and continued to carry on ably during his father’s illness.

Mr. Schumacher married Miss Mary Meyers January 23, 1911, and the couple observed their golden wedding very quietly at their home on that date, this year.

Surviving are Mrs. Schumacher and five sons: Reverend George of Dow City, Iowa; Reverend Tony of Sauk City, Wisconsin; Dr. Peter of Le Mars; Leo of Washington, Iowa; Oscar of Alton.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Madeline, in 1939; three brothers: Henry of Alton, Joe of Granville, and a brother in Luxembourg; and one sister, Mrs. Mike Goergen of Granville.

Mr. Schumacher was a fine citizen and devoted member of his church, St. Mary’s where he was trustee and sang in the choir for 45 years. He was treasurer for many years of the Northwest Iowa Blacksmith Association and treasurer of the Luxembourger Brotherhood of Granville, also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:30 o’clock in St. Mary’s Church, with Reverend George Schumacher as celebrant of the Requiem High Mass; Reverend Tony Schumacher, Deacon; Reverend Leander Friedman of Hawarden Sub-Deacon; Reverend Richard Zenk, Sioux City, master of ceremonies. Burial was in the local St. Mary’s Cemetery, 28 priest in attendance at the Mass. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Schumacher.

OBITUARY of Mary Schumacher 1888-1969
Funeral services were held at St. Mary Catholic church at Alton at 10:30 A.M., January 17, for Mrs. Nick Schumacher, 80, of Alton, who died at the Remsen Rest Home January 14.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Tony Schumacher of Madison, Wis., and burial was made in the church cemetery at Alton.
The former Mary Meyers was born December 23, 1888, at Kaundorf, Luxembourg. She came to Sioux County at the age of 19 and was married to Nick Schumacher January 23, 1911, at Granville.
Survivors include five sons, the Rev. Tony of Madison, Wis., George of Sioux City, Leo of Denver, Oscar of Alton, and Dr. Peter of Le Mars; a sister, Mrs. Kathryn Differding of Canby, Minn.; a brother and three sisters in Luxembourg; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
