Dykstra, Sam 1879-1963 & Grace Van Roekel Family

This story was taken from pages 351-352 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Sam Dykstra was born in 1879, in the Netherlands. He came to the United States when he was ten years old along with his family, two brothers, two sisters, Mom and Dad.

His parents were Nanning and Elizabeth Dykstra. They lived in the Orange City area. Sam worked as a hired man until he married Grace Van Roekel (1909), daughter of Bart and Neltje Van Roekel. After their marriage, they farmed west of Maurice, and later west of Orange City. Wilbert Dykstra was the only child born to this union on July 8, 1910.

Wilbert Dykstra married Anna De Leeuw on June 18, 1936. Anna was the daughter of Egbert and Elizabeth De Leeuw. At this time, the Sam Dykstras retired in Orange City. Sam died in 1963, and Grace died in 1965.

Wilbert and Anna Dykstra have two children. Rodney is married to Luann Olson and they have five children. Daughter Shirley married Earl Welty and they have one daughter.

Seibe ‘Sam’ Dykstra born 26 Sep 1879 Sexbierum, Friesland, Netherlands, died 7 Oct 1963 Ashton IA. His parents were Nanning Eeltjes Dijkstra 1847-1932 and Lijsbeth Martens van Straten 1848-1920. Sam married 17 Feb 1909 to Grace Van Roekel.

Grace Van Roekel was born 19 Apr 1879 Orange City IA died 24 Oct 1965 Ashton IA. Her parents were Albertus ‘Bart’ Van Roekel 1850-1930 and Neeltje ‘Nellie’ Van Peursem 1854-1933. They were the parents of one son Wilbert Dykstra.

OBITUARY OF SAM DYKSTRA
Sioux Center News. 1963-10-17.
Sam Dykstra passed away at the Ashton Convalescent Home Monday afternoon, October 7 where he was a patient for the past two years.
He was born September 26, 1879 he came to America from the Netherlands with his parents when a lad.
He married Grace Van Roekel in 1911. They were the parents of one son, Wilbert, of Sheldon. Surviving besides the widow and son there are two grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Al Giesen of Orange City.
Mr. and Mrs. Dykstra lived near Maurice until 1930 when they moved to Orange City.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the First Reformed church chapel with Rev. R. Van Heukelom officiating. Interment was made in the Orange City cemetery.

MRS.SAM DYKSTRA
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the First Reformed Church Chapel, Orange City, for Mrs. Sam Dykstra, nee Grace Van Roekel, who died Saturday at the Ashton Convalescent Home, where she had been a patient for 6-1/2 years. Mr. Dykstra died at the home there in 1963.
Mrs. Dykstra was born on March 19, 1879, on a farm north of Orange City. She later moved with her parents and family of Maurice, where she was raised. She was married to Sam Dykstra on Feb. 16, 1909. They were parents of a son Wilbur.
Surviving are the son, Wilbur Dykstra, 2 grandchildren, Rodney and Shirley; 4 brothers, Peter Van Roekel of Orange City, George Van Roekel of Maurice, Ben Van Roekel of Orange City and Ernest Van Roekel of Lynden, Wash., 2 sisters Mrs. Henry Van Stryland of Orange City and Mrs. Peter Roos of Sheldon, One sister and 2 brother passed away several years ago. Funeral services were in charge of the Van Etten Funeral Home and burial was in the Orange City cemetery. Rev. R. Van Heukelom and Rev. R. Bast was the officiating pastor.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 25, at the First Reformed church, Orange City, for Mrs. Sam Dykstra, nee Grace Van Roekel, who passed away Saturday, October 23, at the Ashton Convalescent Home, where she had been a patient fort six and one half years. Burial was in the Orange City cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten Funeral home. Rev. R. Van Heukelom and Rev. R.Bast officiated.
Mrs. Dykstra was born March 19, 1879 on a farm north of Orange City. She later moved with her parents and family to Maurice, where she was raised. She was married to Sam Dykstra, February 16, 1909. Mr. Dykstra passed away in 1963.
Survivors include a son Wilbur, two grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters. One sister and two brothers preceded her.
