Drost, Dick 1882-1966 & Mary Meylink Family

This story was taken from page 346 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg

Dick Drost was born January 21, 1882. He married Mary Meylink, the youngest daughter of Theodore and Zwaantje (Ludens) Meylink. Mary was born in 1890.

Their first son, Theodore, died and the date is unknown.
Their second son, also named Theodore, was born July 20, 1920. He married Hattie Meendering who passed away, and he later married Nellie Bouma.
Their third child was Arie, and he was born March 21, 1921. He married Ruth De Haan.
Their daughter, Susan was born February 19, 1923, and died June 3, 1967.
Another son was born in February of 1925, and died at the age of five days.
The mother, Mary, died of complications following childbirth. Dick Drost passed away October 15, 1966.

Dirk ‘Richard A.’ Drost was born 21 Jan 1882 Venendaal, Netherlands and died 15 Oct 1966 Maurice, Sioux, Iowa. His parents were Arie Drost 1827-1908 and Gerrigje Willemptje Legemaat 1858-1891. He married Mary Meylink 21 Feb 1917 Sioux County IA.

Mary Meylink was born Jan 1890 Maurice IA and died 25 Feb 1925 Sioux County IA. Her parents were Theodore Meylink 1849-1921 and Zwaantje ‘Susan’ Ludens 1858-1924.

2. Theodore Drost was born 20 July 1919 Maurice IA and died 26 Apr 1976 Le Mars IA. He married May 1958 to Hattie Meendering 1917-1958, Oct 13, 1959 he married Nellie Bouwman. They had two daughters, Anita and Elaine.
3. Arie Drost born 21 May 1921 IA died 3 Mar 2004 Sheldon IA, he married Ruth Virginia De Haan Dec 11. 1941. They had three children – Carol Reaves of Vancouver WA, Mary Singer of Castle Rock CO and Kevin Drost and wife Carla of Alton.
4. Susan Drost born 19 Feb 1923 IA died 2 Jun 1967 Sioux County IA. Her death record lists Susan Drost born 19 Feb 1923 died 2 Jun 1967 at Maurice IA. Parents Dick Drost and Mary Meylink IA
5. Garret Drost born Feb 1925 died 7 Feb 1925 From the Hawarden Independent of Feb 12, 1925,The infant daughter (son)of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Drost passed away Saturday from a short illness from pneumonia. The child was born February 1st and so lacked one day of being a week old. The sorrowing parents have the sympathy of all in their grief.
(the newspaper article states it was a daughter however in the family story that was in the Maurice book states it was a son, also the ancestry.com report states the name as Garret which is a boy’s name.

Services at Alton for Dick Drost 84. Dick Drost died at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, Saturday, October 15, 1966 at the age of 84 years, Dick Drost was born in the Netherlands January 21, 1882 and came to America in 1913, he was untied in marriage to Mary Meylink on February 21, 1917. Five children were born to this union, two of which died in infancy Mr. Drost farmed near or around Sioux County all of his life, Mrs. Drost preceded him in death in 1925. Survivors include, two sons, Theodore of Le Mars, Arie, and one daughter Susan at home; two brothers, ___ of the Netherlands and ___ of Orange City. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church of Alton on Tuesday October 18, with Rev. Clarence ____ officiating. Burial was made in the Sherman Twp. Cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten funeral home.

Maurice – Mrs. Dirk Drost (Mary Meylink) is Zondag n.m. plotsceling overleden, oud 35 year. Hoewel ze zich een paar dagen niet wel gevoelde, dacht niemand aan lets ernstigs. Zij gebruikte het middagmaal als gewoon en om half twee kwam het plotselinge einde. Haar echtgenoot, 3 kleine kinderen, benovens een broether en twee zusters betreuren haar Heengaan. Woensdag n.m. begrafenis vanuit de 1st Ger. Kere. De getroffen familie houde zich overtuig van onze deelneming in dit treffend verlies.
Translated:
Mrs. Dirk Drost (Mary Meylink) died suddenly on Sunday, aged 35 years. Although she didn't feel well for a few days, no one thought anything serious. She ate the midday meal as usual, and at half-past two the sudden end came. Her husband, 3 small children, a brother and two sisters mourn her passing. Wednesday the funeral was from the 1st Reformed Church. The bereaved family remains convinced of our condolences in this painful loss.
