Schnee, Henry E. Sr. 1833 – 1904 & Catherine Eulberg Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book 1883-1983 page 210. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Henry E. Schnee was born in Moisberg, Province of Nassau Germany in 1833. He came to America in 1851 settling in Wisconsin, Catherine Eulberg was born in Mendt, Nassau Germany in 1836. She came to Wisconsin in 1854.

Henry Schnee married Catherine Eulberg in Dodgeville, Wisconsin in 1857. They farmed near Dodgeville where their family of six children were born. In 1876, the couple with their six children moved to Sioux County, Iowa, settling on a farm three miles south of Hospers. In 1888, Mr. and Mrs. Schnee and their son William moved to the farm in northeast Alton. Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Schnee Sr. Moved to an acreage of their fam, east of railroad boarded by Floyd River, when their son William married. Henry died in 1904. Mrs. Schnee moved into the town of Alton in 1904. She died in 1923. Their children were: Margaret Mrs. Greg Gerst, (Her history elsewhere in the book),

Peter married Cahterine Eulberg born 1862, died 1915 and their children were Josephine (Mrs. John Reith) of Alton IA, Laura and Edna, who were raised in Alton and moved away.

Henry Jr. married Mary Goebel of Granville. Born 1864. Died 1926. Their children were Ernest and Emily and raised in Alton. Ernest died in 1913. Emily moved to Texas. Mrs. Henry Schnee Jr. died and Henry married Margaret Schmeding of Remsen. At the turn of the Century, Henry and Margaret moved to Carthage, S. Dak. They had Eight children, Joseph, Marie, Olivia, Leona, Arnold, Margaret, Celia and Edward.

Joseph married Susan Eulberg born 1866, died 1946. Their children were Alphonse, Catherine, Helen, Ethel, Viola and Vincent. The children were raised in Alton area. They moved away Vincent died in 1910.

Emma married Greg Umhoeffer born 1868, died 1896. Children: Olive, Linden, Sioux City, IA, and Albert who died in 1016.

Heinrich Ernst ‘Henry’ Schnee born 24 Aug 1833 Moisberg, Westrwald, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany died 14 Apr 1904 Alton IA. His parents were Johann Schnee 1799- and Magdalena Jung 1801-1877. Henry Schnee married Anna Catharina Eulberg 4 Apr 1857 Mineral Point Iowa Wisconsin.

Anna Catharina Eulberg was born 17 Jun 1838 Schlangenbad, Rheingau-Taunus-Kries, Hessen, Germany and died 24 Jun 1923 Alton, Iowa. Her parents were Johann Jakob Eulberg 1799-1886 and Maria Elisabeth Klein 1801-1882.

Children of Henry and Catharina:

1. Margaret Schnee born 1860 died 1925 She married Gregory Gerst in 1876. Children Edward, Joseph, Arthur, Rudolph, Rose (Mrs. Dom Jungers) and Hilda (Mrs. Carl Haag). Their story is on page 143 of the St. Mary’s church book.

2. Peter Schnee born Feb 10, 1862 Dodgeville WI died 11 May 1915 Le Mars IA. He married Katherine Eulberg, They had four children Mrs. John Reith of Remsen, Miss Laura Schnee of Des Moines and Miss Edna Schnee of Minneapolis MN. See his obit on this web page.

3. Henry Schnee born 18 Jun 1864 Dodgeville WI died 22 Sep 1926 Mathhews, Kingsbury, SD. married 18 Jun 1889 at Dubuque IA to Mary Magdalena Goebel. Their children were Ernest Schnee 1890-1914 and Emily Katherine Schnee 1893-1971. His second wife was Margaret Schmeiding 1878-1955. They had children Olivia Schnee 1901-1982, Leona A. Schnee 1905-1982, Arnold W. Schnee 1907-1960, Margaratha Schnee 1910-1927, Cecilia Schnee 1912-1994 and Edward Schnee 1918.

4. Joseph Schnee born 20 Aug 1865 Mineral Point, WI died 10 Dec 1947 at Sioux City IA buried Alton, IA. Wife Susan Katherine Eulberg Schnee, Children were Vincent Schnee, Viola Dorothy Cox, Etheldreda J. Rasor, Helen Marie Monger and Alphonse Henry Schnee.

5. Emma Schnee born August 20, 1868 died 14 Feb 1896 Alvord IA. Mrs. Gregg Umhoefer two children were born, a daughter, Olive, and a son, Albert.  See her obit also that of Gregg on this web page.

6. William Schnee born 4 Oct 1870 died 31 Mar 1944 Alton IA 15 Nov 1892 married Anna Henrich. They had children  (Clara) Mrs. George Adler, Howard, South Dakota; Mrs. Ida Gansemer, Sheldon; Albert, Rose (Mrs. Tony Vonderharr) and Cornelia of Alton; Emma and Rita, and Mrs. John R. OBITUARY of Henry Schnee 1822-1904

Monday at nine o'clock occurred the funeral of Henry Schnee who died Thursday of last week. He was born August twenty-four 1833 in Mulsburg Amt Walrmont Hatchew Nassau Germany. In 1851 he left there for America. He was ship wrecked and spent seventy-two days on the ocean—living the last two weeks on a bit of oatmeal. He landed at Quebec Canada and went thence to Kenosha Wisconsin where he worked for a doctor.

In 1857 he was married to Miss Kate Eulberg of Dodgeville Wisconsin. He farmed near there sixteen years and then sold out and moved to Mineral Point near there. There he resided for four years. In 1876 he came with his family to Sioux county and located on the old homestead three miles south of Hospers where his sons Peter and Henry still reside. In 1888 he removed with his wife and son Will to the farm where he died at the north edge of Alton.

He was the father of six children five of whom survive to mourn with their mother. They are Mrs. Gregg Gerst of Alton, Peter and Henry of Hospers, Joseph of Alvord and Will of Alton. A daughter Mrs. Gregg Umhoefer of Alvord died some time ago. Among those from out of town were Mrs. Meuiser and son William and Mrs. Peter Eulberg of Dubuque, Louis Eulberg of Galena Illinois, John Wiest of Dodgeville Wisconsin, Gregg Umhoefer and wife of Alvord, Tony Weidenfeller of Le Mars, John Nothem and wife of Remsen and many from Hospers and Granville.

AGED ALTON RESIDENT PASSES ON--MRS. CATHERINE SCHNEE DIES SUNDAY AFTER WEEKS’S ILLNESS--FUNERAL TODAY

Mrs. Catherine Schnee, resident of this vicinity since 1876, died early Sunday morning, June 24m at her home in Alton. Mrs. Schnee was taken ill the previous Sunday, on the 85th birthday, but had improved through the week and was feeling apparently much better Saturday evening. She passed away quietly and without suffering at about 4:30 the next morning.

Mrs. Schnee was a fine woman of the pioneer type and lived a busy and active life, bringing up a large family of children, to whom she was a devoted mother. The children surviving are Mrs. Margaret Gerst, Alton, Henry Schnee of Carthage, South Dakota, Joseph of Minneapolis and William of Alton. A daughter, Mrs. Gregg Umboefer of Alvord died at the age of 27 and son, Peter, passed away eight years ago. Mr. Schnee died 19 years ago, in 1904. Mrs. Schnee has 34 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. The eldest great-grandchild, Mildred Gerst, was 17 years old the same day her great-grandmother reached the age of 85, their birthday both falling on June 17.

Catherine Eulberg was born June 17 1839 in Mendt Province, Nassau. She came to the United States with her parents in 1854, the family settling near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later they moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin, where Miss Eulberg was married in 1857 to Henry Schnee. Nineteen years later in 1876 the couple with their children moved to Sioux County, settling on a farm three miles.

The funeral was held Tuesday at 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s Church, of which Mrs. Schnee was a faithful member and regular attendant. Very Reverend F. J. Brune officiated. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
