Sauer, Henry 1863 - 1907 and Mary Jane Mulvaney Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 208. The Story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Henry Sauer, son of Magnus and Wilhelmina Sauer of Keystone, Iowa married Mary Jane Mulvaney on February 9, 1888 in St. Mary’s church, Alton. Mary was born January 17, 1866 near Freeport, IL.
They farmed in East Orange Township and were blessed with four daughters and three sons, Ida, Mina, Milo, Hillary, Colletta, Blanche, and Joseph.

Ida born 1891, married Gerhardt Lieb. Mina, born in 1892, married Ocillo Kass, Milo, born in 1895, married Mae Caley. Hilary, born in 1897, married Nell Dowling, Colletta, born in 1901, married Ray Faber. Blanche, born in 1903, married Joseph T. Even, Joseph born in 1905, married Margaret Mc Namara.

Henry died February 7. 1907, and Mary, unable to understand the German (English?) Language spoke and taught at Granville, St. Joseph’s moved to Alton after purchasing a home close to St. Mary’s Academy and Church, where English was taught and the sermons also translated in English. Mary died September 7, 1943 in her 98th year if loving God, her family and friends.

Henry Sauer was born 20 Jun 1863 Freeport Stephenson, IL died 8 Feb 1907 Alton IA. His parents were Magnus Sauer 1838-1907 and Wilhelmina ‘Mena’ Schroeder 1844-1916. He married Mary Jane Mulvaney 8 Feb 1888 at Freeport IL.

Mary Jane Mulvaney was born 17 Jan 1867 Freeport IL and died 7 Sep 1963 at Alton IA. She was the daughter of John Mulvaney 1840-1911 and Rose Reilly 1941-1927. They had the following children:

5. Hillary A. Sauer born Jul 1898 IA died 11 Mary 1964 Milwaukee,Wisconsin married Nell Dowling, one child named Paul Hilary Sauer 1928-2007.

7. Blanche Agnes Sauer born 1 Jul 1903 Sioux County IA died 27 Nov 1986 Alton IA. She married Joseph Theodore Even. Their children were: four sons, Joseph T. Jr., “Jay”, and Mike, both of Alton; Jack of Aurora, Colorado, and Jim of Medina, Ohio; two daughters, Mary Lois Even of Sioux City and Mrs. Jeff (Carol) Halstrom of Yuma, Arizona;

8. Joseph H. Sauer born 1906 IA died 1946 of Omaha. In the 1940 census he was living in Omaha as an insurance attorney. His wife was Margaret Murphy age 31, no children listed.

Henry Sauer a prominent citizen of this community died at a Sioux City hospital last Friday night and was buried in St. Mary's cemetery at Alton on Monday. Deceased was born at Freeport Illinois June twentieth 1863 and was therefore approaching forty four years of age.
When six years old became with his parents to Benton county this state where he lived until 1887. He then came to Sioux county and settled on the farm southeast of Alton where he has since lived. On February ninth 1888 he was married to Miss Mary Mulvany at Alton. It seems peculiarly sad that death should have occurred almost to the hour on the nineteenth anniversary of his wedding day.
Besides a sorrowing wife deceased leaves seven children to mourn his loss. There are three boys and four girls. Eight children were born to them but the eldest died in infancy. It was a bright happy home that death has invaded—the children being notably bright and of gentle manners. The youngest is a boy of eighteen months and the eldest a young woman of sixteen years. The two eldest girls Misses Ida and Minnie have each spent two years in school at Prairie du Chien Wisconsin and the latter was there at the time of her father's death.
Mr. Sauer was afflicted with a disease of the tongue and was sick for two weeks. The physicians held a consultation and saw that an operation was necessary so he was taken to Sioux City Friday evening to St. Joseph's hospital—accompanied by his wife and brother and sister. He was prepared for death though it was hoped an operation would save his life. He seemed however too weak to stand the effects of the ether. He was brought to Alton Saturday noon and was met by his sorrowing relatives and friends and taken to his home southeast of town.
The funeral was held at Alton Monday at ten o'clock. Requiem mass was read by Father Schaeffer of Danbury and Very Rev, Brune preached a very impressive and consoling sermon.
Friends and relatives and societies contributed many beautiful flowers and there was a very large attendance at the funeral. Mr. Sauer was industrious and kind-hearted and loving to his family and one who will be missed as a citizen and neighbor

J. Conway of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Tierney of Remsen, J. J. Reedy of Beresford South Dakota, Jarpes and George Allen and Mr. Kelly of Alvord and Mr. and Mrs. Schnepff of Oyens.

MRS. MARY SAUER, ALTON’S OLDEST RESIDENT, PASSES ON Mrs. Mary Sauer, 97, beloved resident of Alton since 1907 and of this vicinity since considerably earlier, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars Saturday, September 7th. She was Alton’s oldest resident and the oldest member of St. Mary’s Parish.
A Requiem High Mass was celebrated Tuesday A.M. September 10 at St. Mary’s Church, Reverend John Mulvany, her nephew, of Zell, South Dakota was celebrant, with two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Michael Even, acting as Mass servers.
Acting and honorary pallbearers were Don Kass, James Kass, J.T. Even Jr., Michael Even, James Even, Tom Even, Jack Even, John Sauer, Paul Sauer, Joe Lieb, Ray Faber, Dr. F.L. Faber and Rod Faber, grandsons of Mrs. Sauer.
Mrs. Sauer was born in Freeport, Illinois, January 17, 1866, to Mr. and Mrs. John Mulvany, pioneer settlers of this vicinity. She was the eldest of nine children, two of whom survive their sister, namely Mrs. John (Cecelia) Scheckel of Van Nuys, California and Miss Emma Mulvany of Chicago.
In 1888 Mary Mulvany was married to Henry Sauer. Eight children were born to them, of whom six survive: Ida Lieb of Sioux City; Milo of Cherokee, Hilary of Milwaukee, Mina Kass, Colletta Faber (formerly of Chicago) and Blanche Even of Alton. She had 23 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren. One son, Leo, died in infancy and Joseph of Omaha in 1946.
Following the death of her husband in February, 1907, Mrs. Sauer and her children moved from the farm to Alton, where she was active in her parish and in community and special affairs. She was a devoted mother, member of the Altar Rosary Society, Mission Club and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her friends were without number.
