Gaul, Peter A. 1856-1927 & Katherine Delperdang Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1893 page 142. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Peter Gaul and Katherine Delperdang came from Eastern Iowa. Peter from Luxemburg Iowa and Katherine from Springbrook, Iowa. Peter Gaul and Katherine Delperdang together with their brother Nicholas Delperdang and Anna Kass were married in a double wedding ceremony on Jul 7, 1882. They were the first couples to be married in the little country church south of Alton. They settled in Plymouth County and were members of St. Mary’s church in Alton.

They had a family of fifteen children as follows: Anna (Mrs. Ernest Kern), John J., Joseph, Cahterine (Mrs. Michael Holles), Anthony, John, Peter, Rose (Mrs. Fred Croat), Margaret (Mrs. Emil Hansen), Anton, Lambert, Ferdinand, Mary (Mrs. John Vortherms), Martin, Nicholas and Frederick.

Peter Aloysius Gaul born 19 Aul 1856 Luxemburg, Dubuque County Iowa died 15 Nov 1927 Alton, Sioux Iowa. He was the son of Peter Gaul born 9 Feb 1823 Pratz, Redange, Diekirch, Luxembourg and died 15 Apr 1894 Liberty Twp. Dubuque IA and Mary Theresa Ahlers born 29 Sep 1835 Numster, Nordrhein, Westfalen, Germany and died 10 Apr 1895 Liberty, Dubuque, Iowa. Peter married Katherina Catherine Delperdang 7 Nov 1882 Le Mars, Plymouth IA.

Katerina Catherine Delperdang was born 9 Jul 1863 Springbrook, Jackson, IA and died Apr 1937 Alton IA. She was the daughter of Nicholas Delperdang Sr. born 9 Mar 1829 Warnach, Fauvillers, Belguim and died 23 Feb 1912 Alton IA and Josephine Stempert born 2 Sep 1830 Tintange, Fauvillers, Luzembourg, Belgium and died 11 Nov 1872 Alton IA. Peter and Catherine were the parents of 15 children.

1. Annie Maria Gaul born Feb 8, 1884 died Sep 15, 1918. She married Ernest Kern 1879-1970. She was from Tauton MN and was brought home to her parents while suffering from cancer. 2. John J. Gaul born 6 May 1885 Alton IA died 5 Jul 1976 Le Mars IA, buried St. Mary’s cemetery at Alton IA. He was 91 years old and had been living at the Happy Siesta Home in Remsen for a number of years. No wife or children mentioned in his obit found on this web page.

3. Joseph Gaul born 20 Dec 1886 Alton IA died 15 Mar 1888 Alton IA buried in St. Mary’s cemetery. The notice in the Alton paper of Mar 17, 1888 stated, the little fourteen months old son of Peter Gaul two miles east of town died Thursday of brain fever.

4. Catherine Diers Gaul born 28 Dec 1888 Alton IA died 28 Feb 1963 LeMars IA. She married Michael J. Holles Jr. 1886-1949, married 5 Sep 1910. See her obit, Holles, Catherine Mrs. Mike 1888-1963 on this web page. She had three sons surviving her, Clarence and Amborse of Granville, Robert of Red Oak IA, and a daughter Dorothy.

5. Anthony Gaul born 21 Oct 1890 East Orange Twp. Sioux Co. IA died 25 Nov 1890 Sioux County. Atlon newspaper of Dec 6, 1890, a child of Peter Gaul residing two miles east of Prairie Chuch died last week.

6. Peter John Gaul Jr. born 20 Nov 1891 Alton IA died 11 May 1982 Orange City IA, burial in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. He married Sylvia Elizabth Fischbach 1896-1940. The 14 children as listed in his obituary were four sons, Mark of Sioux Falls, Joseph of Granville, Peter of Arlington, Virginia and Theodore of Des Moines; 10 Daughters, Mrs. Les (Gertrude) Dekker, Mrs. Eugene (Rosemary) Nelson and Alfred (Angela) Uhrich, all of Sioux Falls, Sister Verna Gaul of Cascade, Mrs. James (Joan) Meaden of Slayton, Minnesota, Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Block of Sunnyvale, California, Mrs. William D. (Marjorie) Childers of San Diego, California, Mrs. Loren (Elinor) Crawford of Yankton, South Dakota, Mrs. Ivan (Clare) Pottebaum of Granville and Mrs. Gayl (Katherine) Hopkins of Sioux City. After his wife’s death he married Marie Mahar July 1942.

7. Rose Josephina Gaul born 18 May 1893 Alton IA and died 17 Jul 1966 Adrian Nobles MN. She married Frederick John Croat 1891-1949 at Granville 28 Oct 1912. Five Children listed on the family report on ancestry.com, being Wilfred John Croat 1913-1985, Mildred C. Croat 1914-1971, Martha Anna Croat 1916-2002, Lenard Lambert Croat 1918-1919 and Melvin Raymong Croat 1924-2009.

8. Margaret A. Gaul born 1 Oct 1895 Alton IA died 1 Nov 1984 Le Mars IA. She married Emil Theodore Hansen 1893-1983. There were 10 children listed on the report on ancestry.com. Ambrose Hansen 1920-2000, Alfred Nicholas Hansen 1921-1986, Leonard John Hansen 1923-1999, Irene Hansen 19224-2012, Mary Ann Streff Hansen 1926-2014, Dolores Katherine Ludwig Hansen 1927-2002, Jerome Henry Hansen 1929-2019, Gerald Frederick Hansen 1930-1966.

9. Anthony F. Gaul born 27 Nov 1896 Alton IA and died 20 Mar 1943 Sioux County IA. He married Mary J. Bernard 1898-1993. See his obituary on this web page. Gaul, Anton 1896-1943. Obit states survived by his wife and bros and sisters.

10. Lambert Gaul born 7 Feb 1899 Fredonia Twp Sioux Co. IA (Plymouth Co.) died 14 Dec 1960 Rock Rapids IA. He married Mary Teresa Steinkemper 1901-1959. 13. Martin Leo Gaul Sr. born 15 Aug 1903 Remsen IA died 19 Aug 1997 Le Mars IA. He married Marie E. Reith 1909-1992 Five children indicated on ancestry.com family report as Marvin L. 14. Nicholas A. Gaul born 9 Apr 1905 Granville IA died 26 Jun 1994 LeMars IA buried in St.Mary’s cemetery Alton IA. He married Antonette Mary Haupert 1901-1998 Eight children indicated. OBITUARY of Peter Gaul 1856-1927

WELL KNOWN PIONEER WAS NATIVE IOWAN WHO CAME HERE IN 1880
Mr. Peter Gaul, a pioneer farmer at this vicinity, passed beyond last Friday after many months of illness. He suffered a stroke ten months ago and since that time had been filing.
He was a native of Iowa, born at Luxenberg, Iowa, July 10, 1856, aged 71 years and four months at the time of his death. He came to Alton in in 1880 and farmed in this vicinity continuously thereafter except for a year spent near Orient, South Dakota, until 1921 when he and Mrs. Gaul retired from active farm life and retired to a home they purchased in Alton.
His was a sterling, upright character, solidly built on the foundation of honest. Everyone liked Mr. Gaul and liked business dealings with him. He helped build up this community and was an asset to the town. Mr. Gaul will be greatly missed by a host of people who respected and valued him as a friend.
He married in 1882 to Miss Catherine Delperdang and they were the first couple to be married in the “Prairie” Catholic Church southeast of Alton, Reverend Meis performing the ceremony and celebrating Mass. Fifteen children blessed their home, two dying in infancy and Mrs. Ernest Kern preceding her father to the Beyond in September, 1915. The eight sons and four daughters who, with the sorrowing widow, surviving are: John and Martin of Alton; Peter, Anton, Lambert, Ferdinand and Fred P., all of Granville; Nic of Bancroft; Mrs. Mike Holles and Mrs. John Vortherms of Granville; Mrs. Fred Crout of Wilmont, Minnesota, and Mrs. Emil Hansen of Granville.
Besides the twelve surviving children there are thirty grandchildren. Mr. Gaul is also survived by three brothers and four sisters, as follows: Joseph of Dyersville, Henry and Nick of Luxemburg, Iowa; another brother John of Bancroft dying some years ago: Mrs. John Mores of Bloemington, Wisconsin, Mrs. Nic Klemes of Dyersville, Mrs. George Traufier of Dyersville and Mrs. John Goetzinger of Hennessey, Oklahoma.
All the children were present at the funeral services and also the brothers and sisters except Mr. Joseph Gaul and Mrs. Goetzinger who could not come. The six oldest sons acted as pallbearers at their father’s funeral which was held at St. Mary’s Church at Alton Sunday morning at 10:30 o’clock, every seat in the large church being occupied. The St. Joseph society of which Mr. Gaul was a member attended the services in body. Very Reverend Father J. Brune celebrated Requiem Mass and preached a fine sermon at the close of the Mass. Besides the brothers and sisters and their wives and husbands, some of the out of town visitors who attended the funeral were Henry Gaul and daughter Mary of Luxemburg; Nick Gaul of Luxemburg; Mrs. Henry Ginsbech of Sioux Falls; Nick Delperdang, Tony Delperdang and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schiltz and children, Mr. and Mrs. Nic Ernest and daughter, and Mrs. Lambert Delperdang, all of Remsen.
The Alton Democrat joins in sympathy to the bereaved family in the hour in the loss of a beloved husband and folks and community in losing a splendid citizen.

MRS. CATHERINE GAUL WAS PIONEER FARM WOMAN--FUNERAL OF EARLY SETTLER HELD MONDAY
Mrs. Peter Gaul, nee Catherine Delperdang, one of the early settlers of this vicinity, passed on at her home in Alton Thursday after an illness of several months.
Born on July 8th, 1863 at Springbrook, Iowa, she came to Sioux County with her parents from eastern Iowa in the early “70’s”. Her parents settled on a farm southeast of Alton and she attended the first school of that district, held in the hay-loft of her father’s barn. She was married in the “Prairie Church” to Peter Gaul. Father Meis of Le Mars officiating on November 7th, 1882. The couple farmed in this vicinity until some 15 years ago when they moved to Alton. Mr. Gaul died on November 18th, 1927.
Of the fifteen children born to the pioneer couple, twelve survive their mother, who at the time of her passing had sixty-two grandchildren, one great-grand-child. The children are John, Mrs. Mike Holles (Kate), Peter, all of Granville; Mrs. Fred Croat, (Rose) of Wilmont, Minnesota; Mrs. Emil Hansen (Margaret) Oyens; Anton, Granville; Lambert, Aadrian, Minnesota; Ferdinand, Chatsworth; Mrs. John Vortherns (Mary), Marvin, both of Granville; Nick, Alton; Fred, Granville. The oldest daughter, Anna, Mrs. Earnest Kern, died September 15th, 1918 and two children died in infancy.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Mary’s Church, in charge of the pastor, Reverend M.A. Schemel, Reverend N.A. Gaul of Portsmouth and Reverend Arnold Ahlers of Marcus. Pallbearers were grandsons of Mrs. Gaul: Cyril and Mike Kern, Cletus and Lawrence Hansen, Wilfred Croat and Clarence Holles.
Those from out of county here for the services included Mr. and Mrs. Nick Clemen, Elizabeth and Vincent Clemen and George Traufler, all of Dyersville; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Gaul, two sons, and Miss Mary Gaul of Luxemberg; Reverend Gaul and Miss Elizabeth of Portsmouth; William Gaul, Peter Gaul, Mrs. Paul Gaul of Earling; Mr. and Mrs. Chas, Hull, Mrs. Leo Feller of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Kern, Cyril and Milo of Taunton, Minnesota; Mrs. Fred Croat, Wilfred and Mildred Croat, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Boots of Wilmont; Lambert Gaul, Messrs and Mesdames Nick Konz, Elmer Konz, Cyril Their, Ben Ahlers, all of Adrian, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Ernest, Anton Delperdang, Mrs. Nick Delperdang, Mrs. Peter Schultz, Mrs. John Lucas, Mrs. J.P. Arens, Mrs. Alphense Delperdang and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Malrose, Mr. and Mrs. John Thif, Mr. and Mrs. U. Bunkers, Mrs. George Delperdang, Mr. and Mrs. John Schiltz, Anton Schiltz of Remsen, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Majares, Mrs. Chas. Majeres, Mrs. M. Delperdang and son, of Oyens; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Feller, Mrs. William Feller, Mrs. Martin Manderscheid, Miss Christina Mars of Le Mars. Many friends from neighboring towns were here for the rites of this well-loved pioneer mother.
