Even, Mathias 1829- 1913 and Anna Hintgen Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book 1883-1983 page 136. The story was transcribed by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

The church book contains three pages with stories of the Even family descendants; Edward J. Even 1897 family; Jay Even 1926 family; Joseph T. Even 1895 family; Michael H. Even 1929 family; Mike Even 1865 family; Otillia A. Even 1893; and the Thomas W. Even 1933 family. Their information has been summarized into family accounts in this narrative of the family of Mathias Even 1829-1913 by listing his children and grandchildren along with any human interest data revealed on the family.

Mathais and Anna Even’s Story in the Church Book:
Mathias Even, born September 29, 1829 in Alttrier, Luxembourg, the fifth son of Nicolas and Catherine (Rollinger) Even. Immigrated to Galena, IL, with his parents in 1849, moving to St. Donatus, Iowa in 1852, Mathias married Anna Hintgen, September 14, 1855 at St. Donatus, then moved to Gilbertsville, IA. In 1881 before they retired and moved to Alton in 1893. Anna had been born in Hastert, Luxembourg on Feb 17, 1835, moving to the USA with her parents in 1855.

Mathias and Anna had 12 children, two of whom died in infancy. Peter, John, Mary who married a Lutgen, Mike, Nick, Joe, Ted, Margaret who married Mike Hoxmeier, Anna who married a Homan, and Susan who married Nick Martin. Anna died on Oct 5, 1896; Mathias died Oct 12, 1913, both are buried in St. Mary’s cemetery Alton IA.

From a family report on ancestry.com - Mathias Even was born 29 Sep 1829 Altrier, Canton of d’Echterach, Grevenmacher, Luxembourg, and died 12 Oct 1913 Alton, Sioux, IA. His parents were Nicolaus (Ewen) Even 1801-1852 and Maria Catherina Rollinger 1794-1849. Mathias married Anna ‘Annie’ Hintgen 1835-1898 on Sep 14, 1855 St Donatus, Iowa.

Anna Hintgen was born 17 Feb 1835 Hostert, Luxembourg and died 5 Oct 1898 Sioux County IA.
Her parents were Pierre ‘Peter; Hintgen born 7 Sep 1795 Hostert, Rambrouch, Luxembourg, he died 13 May 1872 Tete Des Morts Township, Jackson, Iowa; and Suzanna Simon born 1790 died 1954 in Luxembourg. It appears Peter Hentgen then Immigrated in 1855. Found immigration passenger lists with Peter Hentgen 59(?), Anna 22, Bernhard 25 all from Belguim (Luxembourg), arrival 23 May 1855 New York Castle Garden, Ship name Connecticut, left Le Havre France. Her brother, Bernhard born 1830 Luxembourg died 5 Sep 1910 Jackson Co. IA

2. Mary Even born 2 Sep 1857 St Donatus, Jackson IA, died 15 Nov 1907 Flandreau SD. She married Nicholas Lutgen born 1848 died 6 Jul 1907 Moody Co. SD. They had children Mathias Lutgen 1878-1933, Peter Joseph Lutgen 1881-1955, Margaret Lutgen 1884, Michael John Lutgen 1887-1940, Nicolas Lutgen 1889-1950 and Joseph Lutgen 1892-1954.

3. Annie Even born 12 May 1861 IA died 16 Aug 1913 Nobles Co. MN married 24 May 1881 Theodore Homan, he was born 13 Sep 1855 St. Donatus, Jackson, IA died 12 Jan 1925 Adrian, Nobles County MN. They were the parents of Mathias Homan 1882-1949, Anna Homan 1883-1968, Elizabeth Homan 1885-1963, Mary Homan 1888-1960, Clara Homan 1890-1960, Theodora Dora (Sister Mary David) Homan 1894-1978, Lauretta Bertha Homan 1897-1980, and Veronica Homan 1901-1992.

4. John B. Even born 12 May 1863 St. Donatus, Jackson IA, died 19 Mar 1919 Sioux Falls SD. In 1913 he was living in Humbolt SD, wife Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Mary Dietz 1863 – 1937 married 11 Sep 1889 Centrailia Dubuque IA , children Leo Mahias Even 1892-1977, Hilda Nicolette Anna Even 1894.

5. Mike Even born 24 Aug 1864 St. Donatus, Jackson, IA died 9 Jan 1840 Alton IA.
This is the family story that was in the St. Mary’s Church Book 1883-1983.
Mike Even was born August 24, 1865, near St. Donatus, IA. Mike ventured to the Hartford, South Dakota area, married Mary Gillen on Apr 10, 1888 at Hartford. Mary was born to John and Katherine Gillen on March 10, 1869. They farmed near Humbolt, before they moved to Alton in November 6, 1899. Mike purchased the local livery and operated a livery-dray service in Alton until his retirement.
Seven children were born to Mike and Mary. Frank, who married Susan Kurtenacker and moved to South Daktoa; Anne, who married Peter J. Hansen and lived in Alton; Ottilia, who did not marry. Joseph T., who married Blanche Sauer and lived in Alton; Edward J. who married Olive Arens and lived in Alton; Georgia who married Raphael Sudtelgte, moving to Remsen area, presently (1983) living in Le Mars; Frances, who married Clifford Meylor and presently living in Le Mars.

His wife was Anna Mary Kuhl born Jul 28, 1874 Hazel Green WI died Mar 26, 1966 Rapid City, SD. In 1900 the family was living in Spring Lake Hanson, SD, children – Mary Even 5, Florence 8, M. H. 7. Margaret Even born 28 Feb 1869 Jackson Co. IA died 5 Sep 1921 Alton IA buried in St. Mary’s cemetery Alton IA. In Gilbertsville she married Mike Hoxmeier Nov 21, 1888 he died Jan 3, 1898. . They had two children Joseph died in infancy, and a daughter Anne, Mrs. Amos F. Klein of Howard SD.

8. Joseph T. Even born 17 Feb 1871 St Donatus Jackson Iowa died 16 Mar 1910 Minnehaha Co. SD , son of Matt Even of Alton married to Katherine Marie Ripperda born 25 Apr 1874 in Wisconsin, married 3 Dec 1895 Fayette Co. IA. 9. Theodore ‘Ted’ Even born 31 Jul 1873 Jackson Co. IA died 9 Jul 1912 Gilbertsville, IA. He married Margaret Schmitz 1874-1952. Their children were Leona Frances Even 1894-1987, Joseph H. 10. Susan Even born 26 Mar 1875 St. Donatus Jackson IA, died 20 Apr 1969 Alton IA, married 11 Jan 1899, to Nick Martin 1870-1953. One child listed as Loyal Richard Martin 1912-2000 of Cherokee. Her obit was carried in the Alton Democrat of April 24, 1969. Her funeral was at St. Mary’s church and she was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery Alton IA.

Mathias Even died at his home on Sunday, October 12th after a sickness of three weeks, at the age of 84 years and 13 days.
Deceased was born at Alt-Trier, Luxemburg on September 29, 1829, to Nicolas and Maria Katherina (Rollinger) Even. On his 20th birthday anniversary he landed in Galena, Illinois. From here he continued his way on foot to Iowa, there being no railroads west of Chicago at that time. In 1852 he engaged in farming near St. Donatus, Iowa. In 1881 he moved to Gilbertville and farmed there until 1893 when he retired and moved to Alton where he spent his remaining years.
In 1855 on September 14th he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Hintgen who passed on fifteen years ago. This union was blessed with twelve children, five of whom survive. They are: Peter of Dubuque, John B. of Humboldt, South Dakota, Michael of Alton, Mrs. Margaret Hoxmeier of Alton and Mrs. Susan Martin of Granville. Deceased is also survived two sisters, Mrs. Schilz of Bancroft, Iowa and Mrs. Schumacher of St. Mary’s, California.
The funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, Very Reverend F.J. Brune officiating. Interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Mrs. Nic Even of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Theo Even of Gilbertville, N. Even of Sibley, N. Even of Dell Rapids, Mrs. William and George Even of Humboldt, South Dakota and Frank Even of Humboldt, South Dakota, and many old friends from Hospers, Granville and Remsen attended the funeral.

OBITUARY of Anna Mrs. Mathias Even 1835-1898

The death of Mrs. Mathias Even occurred at her home in this city last Wednesday at 11:30 o'clock p. m,, after a five weeks' illness of a complication of physical ailments. When the final hour came she was surrounded by her husband and children and one brother, Theo. Hintgen of Bellevue, Iowa. Rev, Father Brune was also present at her bedside and administered the holy sacraments of the Catholic church, of which deceased was a devout and consistent member. Mrs. Even, nee Miss Anna Hintgen, was born in Hostert, Luxembourg, February 17th, 1835, and was sixty-three years of age at the time
of her death. In the spring of 1855, she came to this country with her parents and settled at St. Donatus, Iowa, where on September 14th of the same year she was united in marriage with Mathias Even. In the spring of 1880, Mr. and Mrs. Even removed to Blackhawk county and
engaged in farming which they pursued until five years ago, when they came to this city and purchased their residence and settled down to enjoy the comforts and fruits of their labors
in their declining years.
During their forty-three years of wedded life twelve children were born to them, ten of whom are living at this time, Peter Even of Dubuque,; Mrs. Mary Lutgen and Theo. Even of Gilbertsville, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Hoeman (Homan), J. B., Joseph and Mike Even of Wellington, S, D.; Nick Even of Epiphany, S. D.; Mrs. Margaret Hoxmeier and Susan Even of this city. She also leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband and children, two brothers, Theo. and Bernard Hintgen of Bellevue, Iowa. The funeral will be held from St.Mary's church in this city Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Father Brune. THE DEMOCRAT extends condolence and sympathy to the sorrowing relatives and friends.
