OBITUARY OF MATTIE O. WELLS
From the Thursday, November 11, 1920 Hawarden Independent:
Death of Pioneer Woman
Mrs. Mattie O. Wells, one of the pioneer residents of Sioux county, died at her home in Ireton Monday evening, after an illness of more than two years' duration. She lapsed into unconsciousness last Friday and the end came in calm peaceful sleep. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon and interment was made in the Ireton cemetery.
Mattie O. Sherman was born in Erie, Pa., August 25, 1856. She came to Sioux county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Sherman, in 1870. They located on a homestead close to where the town of Ireton now stands, and the deceased has always lived in this vicinity since those early days. In 1875 she was united in marriage to George Whalen. Two sons, Herbert Whalen of Minneapolis and Ray Whalen of Ireton, were born to this union, both of whom survive. On October 11, 1881, she was united in marriage to Simon Welts. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive her. They are: Clark J. Wells of Quincy, Ill., Frank Wells, Mrs. Mary Nanninga and Earl Wells, all of Ireton. She Is also survived by one brother, James Sherman of LeMars, Iowa.
Following her marriage to Mr. Wells they resided on a farm north of Ireton until his death a number of years ago. Since then she has made her home in Ireton. During her last illness she has been tenderly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Mary Nanninga. Deceased was ever of a happy disposition, and during her long illness was cheerful and hopeful through it all. The writer has known her for many years and can speak from personal knowledge of her many good and noble qualities. Many besides those of the family circle will mourn her passing. The community extends sincere condolence to the bereaved relatives.
Poster's note: In the 1925 Iowa census for Plymouth County, Mattie's brother James H. Sherman gives his parents' names as Martha (Reynolds) and L.D. Sherman. Other information available on the internet makes it likely that Martha (Reynolds) Sherman was also Mattie's mother.

Added the obituaries of the parents of Mattie Sherman Wells, Lorenzo Sherman and wife Martha Reynold

Mrs. L. D. Sherman, one of the pioneer ladies of Sioux county, died at he home of her son, on the old homestead near Ireton, last Sunday in her 82nd year. She came to Sioux county with husband, the late Hon. L. D. Sherman, in 1870, sharing with him the privations and inconveniences of those pioneer days. As the writer personally knows their home was always a haven to those less humbly situated than themselves and more than one discouraged and heart-sick pioneer was made to feel under everlasting gratitude for their many deeds and words of kindness.
(The submitter has found more information on Mrs. Sherman as her maiden name was Reynolds. See Lorenzo D. Sherman's obituary for more details of the family. Martha is listed in the Sioux County Cemetery index as born 17 Nov 1817 and died 3 Sep 1900 however the year of death was 1899 as found in her death record in the Hawarden paper of that year.
