VandePol, Dick 1890-1935 and Etta Elizabeth Eastman Family

This story was taken from page 486 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Dick Vande Pol was born Jan. 15, 1880 (actually 1890) at the Hague, Netherlands. He came to America in June 1911 and married Etta Elizabeth Eastman on Feb. 18, 1915. He became a naturalized citizen on Sept. 10, 1919. He passed away Dec. 1935.

Etta Elizabeth Eastman was born Nov. 19, 1893 in Sioux Co. and died Feb. 17, 1974. She married Dick Vande Pol on Feb. 18, 1915.

Seven children were born to this couple: Eva Ellen (Zalme) in 1916; Wayne Dick in 1918; John William in 1919; Louis Lloyd in 1921; Arthur Eugene in 1923; Donald Alvin in 1929; and Lucille May (Mrs. Martin Huckle) in 1934.

Mr. Vande Pol was a carpenter by trade and a farmer after his marriage. They lived on farms in Sioux Co. before moving to the Torwelle farm near Ireton in Mar. 1935. After he died that year the family remained on the farm, later moving to the R.J. Koehler farm SW of Ireton. The family remained there until 1955 when they had a farm sale and Mrs. Vande Pol, John, and Louis moved to Hawarden. Mrs. Vande Pol was employed at Mapes Nursing Home for several years before she retired. John passed away Feb. 11, 1970—Louis passed away in 1972.

RESEARCH NOTES: Added by Wilma J. Vande Berg Sources - Census records, Netherlands records www.wiwwaswie.nl. Ancestry.com family public member trees as submitted by others. Note also that the American name for Derk here is Dick, Jan Willem is John William and for Evertje is Eva. The surname Van de Pol can be recorded as Vande Pol or Vander Pol, likewise Vande Brink can be Vander, Vanden, with variations of Van de, Van der or Van den.

1925 census of Logan Twp Sioux county IA lists Dick Vanderpol age 34 born abt 1891 Neth. wife Etta vander Pol, parents John W. Vanderpol and Eva VandeBrink.
Etta Eastman Vanderpol age 31 born about 1894 Sioux County IA , her parents were Charley Eastman and Cora Kline. Children in 1925 were Eva 8, Hain(Wayne) 6, John W. 5, Louis L. 3. Arthur E. 1.

In the above narrative from the Ireton Centennial Book, the family author stated Dick was born 1880 in the Hague Netherlands. The birth date of 1880 is not correct it is more like 1890 in the census records. No proof of his birth in the Hague Netherlands could be found. Based on the 1925 census parents indications were that his parents were John W. Vande (r) Pol and Eva Vande (n) Brink.

Based on that information a marriage was found in the Netherlands records for Jan Willem van de Pol, a saw miller, born at Ede Gelderland, age 31, married to Evertje van den Brink born at Ede age 17. Jan’s parents Hendrik van de Pol and Aaltje van de Craats, and Evertje’s parents Derk Van den Brink and Teunisje Van Beek. Jan and Evertje were married Nov 9, 1875 Renkum, Gelderland, Netherlands.

Further proof of the parentage of Derk van de Pol comes from his birth record in the Netherlands. Derk ‘Dick’ van de Pol was born 15 Jan 1890 at Renkum, Gelderland, Netherlands to Jan Willem van de Pol 45 and Evertje van den Brink 32. This child named Derk was the third child named Derk born to the parents the two previous having died in infancy.

Conclusion:
Derk ‘Dick’ Van de Pol was born 15 Jan 1890 in Renkum Gelderland Netherlands to parents Jan Willem Van de Pol 1845 and Evertje ‘Eva’ van den Brink 1858. He married Etta Eastman Feb 18,,1915.

OBITUARY OF DICK VANDE POL 1890 – 1936

DICK VANDE POL KILLED MONDAY
Well Known Farmer a Victim of Hunting Accident
Was 46 Years Old and Lived in This Community 25 Years--Leaves Wife and Seven Children
Dick Vande Pol, for nearly twenty-five years a well known farmer of this community, was killed Monday afternoon near his home, seven miles east of Hawarden, by the accidental discharge of his shotgun while out hunting. Mr. Vande Pol left the house about 2 o'clock in the afternoon to try and shoot some rabbits. A couple of hours later Mrs. Vande Pol heard the sound of a gun being discharged but gave no particular heed to it. However, as darkness began to gather and Mr. Vande Pol had not returned to assist with the chores members of the family became alarmed and started a search for him. Being unable to locate him some of the neighbors were notified and joined in the search. They picked up his tracks in the snow where he had been hunting some distance from the house and followed them to the edge of the grove, just west of the farm home, where they found his lifeless body lying on the ground with the gun beside him. Apparently he had tripped over some shrubbery in the grove and the gun must have been discharged when he stumbled and fell. The shotgun charge entered his neck and tore upwards through one side of his head. Death was evidently instantaneous.
Members of his family and his many friends and neighbors were sorely shocked at news of his death. He was always a hard worker and a man of the strictest integrity and enjoyed the confidence and good will of a wide circle of friends. He was a big-hearted and a man of generous spirit and his death comes as a severe blow to his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Vande Pol home and at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church in Hawarden, with Rev. J. G. Waterman in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Dick Vande Pol was born in Holland and would have been 46 years of age at his next birthday on Jan. 15th. He grew to young manhood in Holland where he followed the trade of painter and decorator in his youth. Learning of the better opportunities afforded in America he determined to come to this country to make his home and arrived in the United States in 1911. He came almost directly to this community and secured work as a farm hand and has continued to farm ever since. On Feb. 17, 1915, he was united in marriage with Miss Etta Eastman of Hawarden. For fifteen years he operated the Mrs. John Abbey farm, five miles southeast of Hawarden, but last March moved to the farm, a mile and a half northwest of Ireton, where his tragic death occurred and where he had expected to continue farming the coming year. Besides his widow he is survived by five sons and two daughters, Eva, 20; Wayne, 18; John, 16; Louis, 14; Arthur, 13; Donald, 6; and Lucille, 1 year old, all of whom are at home. He also leaves one brother and one sister in Holland.
