Ten Napel, Herman J. ‘Manus’ 1884-1961 & Dena Noteboom Family

This story was taken from page 473 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Our family history begins with H.J. Ten Napel, who was born in Holland in 1884. He came to America at the age of 9 with his parents and brother, H.E. Ten Napel (former Ireton resident and town mayor) and one sister, Fanny.

H. .J. married Dena Noteboom in 1906. He was a lifetime farmer in Sioux Co. They farmed in Eagle Twp. from 1920-1944. Together they had 9 children, 2 of whom died as infants, a son Edward, who died at the age of 23 in a car accident, and Peter, (a resident of Texas) who died in a farm accident while vacationing in 1972. Surviving sons are Harm, of Ireton, and Marion, of Sioux Center. Daughters include: Nellie (Mrs. Elmer Heusinkveld) of Oregon, Ada (Mrs. Butch Barents), and Mrs. Francis Mulder, both of Ireton.

Upon H.J.’s retirement in 1944 they moved into Ireton. Dena, his wife, died in 1951. Later, in 1953, H.J. married Minnie Dekkers. After 9 years of marriage, H.J. died of a heart attack in 1961. Mrs. Minnie Ten Napel still resides in Ireton.

H.J. was called “Manus” by his friends. He was very active in church work, being an elder and Sunday School Supt. for many years in the Ireton First Reformed Church.

(Their Son):
Harm Ten Napel, son of H.J. and Dena Ten Napel, was born near Sioux Center in 1912. He came to the Ireton area with his parents in 1920. He married Margaret Koopmans, daughter of Fred Koopmans, in 1933.

They have a family of nine children. Marvin and Fred (who own and operate a feed and grain service) of Ireton; Dorothy (Mrs. Myron Vander Wilt) of Sheldon; Anita (Mrs. Gerald Weg) of Bigelow, Mn.; LeeRoy of Sibley; Don of Sioux Center; Vernon also of Sibley; Marlow, an electrician; and Valerie, both of Ireton.

Harm was a construction worker from 1933-1940. He then operated a portable milling service in Ireton for 3 years. He farmed around Bigelow, Mn. and Ireton until 1975. In 1975, he retired and now lives at the east edge of Ireton.
