Smith, Phillip H. 1823-1875 & Elizabeth Brigle 1833-1915 Family

This story was taken from page 469 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith and 9 of her children moved from Ashland, Oh. to Benton Co. in 1888, and later moving to Sioux Co. about 1890. They settled ˝ mile east and 1 mile north of what is now known as Highland, all except one daughter, Mrs. Dave Weaver, who bought the farm in SW corner of Highland intersection. The Weaver’s donated an acre of their farm on which to build the Mt. Joy Church of God. The families helped build the congregation and church.

Sarah Jane Smith (born 16 Mar 1857 Ashland OH died 3 Jun 1944 Milaca MN) , married David Weaver in 1875 and moved to Ark. where their children were born. They moved to Iowa (Benton Co.) and joined her mother and others and came to Sioux Co. Later they homesteaded in N.D.

George Smith married Effie Troutman and bought and farmed the farm Lawrence Schuller now owns. George built a small house in the SE corner of the farm for his mother to live in when her family left home. George and family later bought a farm near Paullina, Ia. where he moved. His mother’s home was moved into Ireton just across north from the Ireton Park, where Mrs. “Grandma Smith” lived until she passed away in 1917. Earl Wells, Elmer VanderHamm, and Gregg Dekkers have lived there since, with several remodelings.

Ella Smith born 26 Sep 1862 A married David Crouse around 1895.(See the obit of Davie Crouse 1856-1904. )

Kate (Smith born 14 Jan 1860 Ashland OH died 23 Jun 1943 Zeeland MI) married George Crouse in 1895 and farmed in Eagle and Reading Twps. (See the obits of Mrs. A. George Crouse 1860-1943, and that of Geroge Crouse 1862-1935.)

Frank (Franklin Theodore Smith born 15 Jul 1858 Ashland OH died 7 Feb 1932 Sioux City married and lived in Sioux City, IA.

Will Smith (born 8 Aug 1853 Ashland OH and died 13 May 1929 Paulina IA.

Mary Amelia Smith (born 7 Mar 1856 Ashland OH died 1 Dec 1928 died Sioux City IA)never married, but stayed with their mother.

Minnie Smith( born 19 Nov 1873 Milton Twp Ashland OH died 7 Nov 1943 Miles City Montana) married Christian Kollman and farmed in this vicinity quite a while before moving to Sioux City.

Harvey Smith (born 24 Mar 1870 Ashland OH died 9 Oct 1935 Jamestown N D. ) married and moved to N.D. to a farm claim.

The boys farmed in earlier years. Frank and George Crouse, who married Kate, owned a threshing machine and threshed for several farmers. They would stay day and night until they got through. Farmers stacked bundles of grain into high cone-shaped stacks in those days.

Sam (Samuel Edward Smith born 11 May 1861 Milton Twp Ashland OH died 16 mar 1931 Sterling CO.) married and later moved to Colorado where he farmed.

Find a Grave lists Elizabeth Smith, nee Brigle born 22 Aug 1833 Pittsburgh PA died 30 Jul 1915 Ireton IA buried Pleasant Hill Cemetery Ireton IA. Her parents were John and Catherine Brigle. Her husband was Philip H. Smith. Children listed were: Clara Ellen Voverka, Mary A. Smith, William H. Smith, John S. Smith. Malinda A. Smith, Franklin T. Smith, Harvey E. Smith, George W. Smith and Sara Jane Smith.
Her husband was Philip Harvey Smith born 9 Mar 1823 Germany and died 6 May 1875 Ashland OH He was the son of Heinrch Schmidt 1801 (?)

1850 Census of Milton, Ashland OH John Brigle was 53 born about 1817 Germany, a farmer with real estate value 6000. Wife Catherine Brigle was 52, Children Catherine 19, Elisabeth 17, Harvey 15, Mary 13, Margaret 10 and Sarah 5.

1860 census of Milton Ashland OH, Real Estate 9500. Wife Elizabeth age 25. Children Wm age 6, Mary 4.

1870 Census of Milton Ashland OH lists Philip Smith 47 born abt 1823 Nas..Prussia, estate value $1254 wife Elizabeth Smith born 1833 PA Children: William Smith age 17 born about 1853 OH; Mary Smith age 14 born about 1856 OH; Sarah Jane Smith age 13 born about 1857 OH; Franklin Smith age 12 born about 1858 OH; Catherine Smith age 8 born about 1862 OH; Samuel Smith age 7 born about 1863 OH; Kittie Smith abt 6 born about 1864 OH; Ellen Smith age 4 born about 1866 OH; George Smith age 3 born about 1867 OH; Harvey Smith age 3 mo born Mar 1870 OH.

1880 Census of Milton, Ashland OH
Elizabeth Smith age 46 born about 1834 PA was a widow, Children – William age 26, Mary age 23, Frank age 22, Catharine age 20, Samual age 19, Ella age 13, Geroge age 12, Harvey age 9, Minnie age 6, and Etta age 17.

1900 census of Eagle township Sioux county IA lists Elizabeth Smith age 66 born about Aug 1835 PA, son William H. Smith age 47 born Aug 1852 and Mary Smith age 44 was living with her.

OBITUARY OF ELIZABETH SMITH
Alton Democrat of Jul 31, 1915
The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Smith last week was very sudden and removed one of the oldest persons of The community. She was past eighty-two years of age and had lived in Sioux county some twenty-four years. Her husband passed away almost forty years ago . She is survived by nine children all of whom were here when she passed away.
They are William and Mary who have been making their home with their mother. Frank of Sioux City, George of Paullina, Sam of Brookings, S. D., and Harvey of North Dakota. Mrs. Frank Voverka of Hawarden, Mrs. Jane Weaver of Hazelton, N. D., and Mrs. Minnie Coleman of Sioux City. Mr. and
Mrs. Ross Day of Paullina were also here to attend the funeral which took place at the United Presbyterian church. Rev. Cox, pastor of the Mount Joy church; of which Mrs. Smith was a member had charge of the funeral service and interment took place at the Ireton cemetery.
