OBITUARY OF WILLIAM JOHNSON REID 1864-1937
Source: Hawarden Independent (1-21-1937)
Born: May 15, 1864 Died: January 14, 1937
A. P. Reid received word Thursday of the death of his brother, William Reid, 72, who died early Thursday morning in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Thomas, at Muscatine. The body was shipped to Ireton and funeral services were held at the Methodist Church her Saturday afternoon with the Reverend W. O. Harper, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, in charge, assisted by Reverend George E. Schneider. One of the tributes was the singing by the Ireton High School Mixed Chorus of songs sung at the funeral of his wife by the same group. "My Faith Looks Up to Thee" and "Abide With Me," with Keith Vande Water at the piano. Mrs. Morris Kluther sang a solo, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," with Mrs. Henry Poll at the piano. Many beautiful floral offerings paid tribute to his passing. The pall bearers were all World War service men, William Miller, H.A. Smith, Harry Sewick, Adolph Twillman, I.N. Goin and Otis Wandling.
For the past three years Mr. Reid had been ailing and at times his life was despaired of, but he would rally and get up and about. He spent most of his summer in Ireton with his son and family and seemed to enjoy himself with his many friends who will long remember him. This especially true of the youths and lassies who had contact with him for all the years he was at the school building and who always found a friend in him.
Mr Reid was born in Lowden May 15, 1864, the son of James and Jane Reid, and passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Thomas, at Muscatine, Iowa, early Thursday morning, January 14, 1937, aged 72 years, 7 months and 29 days. He received his education and grew to manhood in Lowden, and continued to live here for some time following his marriage to Minnie Ryer of Boone on December 16, 1888. About thirty-two years ago they moved to Ireton. *[ found he married Minnie Terry on Dec of 1888 at Charter Oak IA.]
Surviving are his two sons, Lee of South Dakota and Charles of Ireton, his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Thomas of Muscatine, and several grandchildren; also four brothers, Del of Cedar Rapids, Charles of Tipton, A. P. Reid of Lowden and James of California and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Struck of Clarence and Mrs. Maud Simpson of Olin.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Reid located at Charter Oak, Iowa. After a time they moved to Lowden. In 1901 they came to Ireton, which was their home until it was broken by the death of Mrs. Reid in December, 1934. Her passing was a heavy blow to him. Shortly after that time he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas.
Mr. Reid worked at his trade as carpenter and builder the greater part of his active life and left many monuments to his skill and industry. Then in 1920, at the age of 56, he began the crowning work of his life, that of janitor of the public school of Ireton. Into this work he put his whole heart and soul. He continued for 15 years until failing health compelled him to relinish it. He saw generation after generation of student come and go. He was brought into close and helpful relations with them all and with practically all of the families of the community.

Deceased was born and reared in West Boone, Iowa and was united in marriage at Dunlap, Iowa to William Reid on December 16, 1888 and came soon after to Ireton which has since been their home.

(Note: All indications are that William J. Reid married Minnie Terry instead of Minnie Ryker as noted in his above obituary. Minnie’s obit states she was born in West Boone, Iowa and was united in marriage at Dunlap, Iowa to William Reid on December 16, 1888 and came soon after to Ireton which has since been their home. The name of Minnie Terry may have been confused with the name of Minnie’s mother Sarah Richards. )
