Juffer, Gerrit T. 1897-1991 & Gertrude Brouwer Family

This story was taken from pages 417-418 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Gerrit T. was born on Feb. 8, 1897, in the Netherlands, and came to the U.S. in the year, 1901, with his father, Tymen Juffer, who was a widower at that time. They lived on a farm in Sioux Co., until the year 1918.

After leaving the farm, G.T. entered the National School of Business in Sioux City, Ia., from which he graduated and entered the banking business with the Security Savings Bank, in Ireton, Ia. on Oct 1, 1919.

Gertrude Brouwer was born in Hull, Ia. on Feb. 9, 1898 and had her schooling in the Hull Public Schools and Calvin College of Grand Rapids, Mi. After her schooling she taught for three years in the Sioux Center Chr. School and 1 year in the Rock Valley Chr. School.

On Aug. 5, 1920, G.T. and Gertrude were married at her residence in Hull, Ia.

To this family were born eight sons and three daughters: Theodore A. Juffer of Omaha, Nb.; Preston J. Juffer, deceased Jan. 20, 1969; Gerald A. Juffer of Ireton, Ia.; Dr. Herman G. Juffer of Decorah, Ia.; Ruth Ann Young of Onawa, Ia.; Donald R. Juffer of Wagner, S.D.; Dr. Arlin A. Juffer of Sibley, Ia.; Verla Beth Jungling of San Diego, Ca.; Leo Dean Juffer of San Diego, Ca.; Dr. Marvin J. Juffer of Hutchinson, Mn.; and Elna Jane Juffer of Sibley, Ia.

All of the Juffer children had their primary and high school education in the Ireton, Ia. schools and received a college education and now have their respective vocations where they are residing at the present time.

G.T. had always a great interest in the town of Ireton as well as the community surrounding Ireton, having seen the town from the time they still had the horse and buggy days, with hitching posts all the way from the Methodist Church four blocks down to the Depot, which was the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. All the streets were of dirt construction and took four horses to bring the freight from the Depot to the business places after a good rain or in the spring when the frost was leaving the ground.

G.T. has practically held every responsible office during his life time in Ireton: Chamber of Commerce, Pres. Ireton Booster Club and Lions Club, City Clerk, City Treasurer, Director of the Ireton Public Schools, and Pres. for twelve years. He is a member of the Ireton Christian Reformed church, and also has served as deacon.

In the year 1959, he was nominated and elected the National Father of the Year, by the National Father’s Day committee of New York City, N.Y. The presentation was made at the State Lions Convention at Mason City, Ia. by the Governor of Iowa.

G.T.’s tenure with the Security Savings Bank, commenced on Oct. 1, 1919, as bookkeeper and gradually moved up to Teller, Ass’t. Cashier, Cashier, and President, until Jan. 1, 1963. At that time he sold controlling interest to his two sons, Preston James and Gerald A. and from that time held the Chairmanship of the Board of Directors until the present time, having been affiliated with said bank as of Oct. 1, 1919-61 years.

5 DONALD ROY JUFFER born Sep 27, 1931 died Dec 24, 2015 Wife - Jean of Wagner SD
Donald R. Juffer Obituary
Donald Roy Juffer was born on September 27, 1931 to parents Gerrit T. and Gertrude (Brouwer) Juffer in Ireton, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Wagner on December 24, 2015 at age 84. A private service for family was held on December 25th.
Don was baptized and confirmed at the Christian Reformed Church of Ireton. He attended Ireton Christian Elementary School; further, completing graduation from Ireton High School in 1949. Don proceeded to continue his education at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. Early on in his college career, Don's older brothers, Gerald and Pat, proudly entered deployment with the military service; leaving his father with less help. Upon his father's request, Don returned home to Ireton to assist with the family bank. Doing so, Don found his passion and calling as a banker. In 1951, Don's brothers returned home safely and returned to the family bank.
Don chose Wagner, SD for the next chapter of his life. He met Bly and Juanita Wilson who graciously opened their home to him; he resided there for six years. He began work at Commercial State Bank where he built up a respectable work ethic that was easily recognized and admired. While working at the bank Don embarked on the opportunity to further his education with summer courses over a period of three years and graduated from the prestigious Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, WI. Don united in marriage with the love of his life, Della JEAN DeRaad, on June 28, 1956.
In 1969, Don's brother (Pat) passed away. Once again, his father called upon him to return to Ireton to help with the family bank. Don declined the opportunity and chose to stay in Wagner where he and Jean had already started a new home and family of their own.
Don had a great love for the community of Wagner. He had many great visions and dreams for the possibilities of Wagner and he felt called to do what he could to make the town and surrounding areas better for future generations. This calling led him to be a significant member of the community as he served on numerous boards for several different organizations. Some include: Commercial State Bank, Frei Insurance Agency, Juffer Real Estate, Wagner Native Ethanol, District III, Wagner Community Hospital, Industry and Commerce, Good Samaritan Society of Wagner (he was an instrument in getting this established in Wagner), St. John's Lutheran Church, Wagner Area Growth, Wagner Rotary, Elks, Masons, Randall Hills Country Club, Fort Randall Marina, Wagner City Councilman and Mayor. Don was a key part of getting the Veteran Hospital located in Wagner and worked closely with many tribal members on different issues throughout the years. Don worked diligently on the Wagner Community School establishment and evolvement to continue creating opportunities for education. In recognition for his service and commitment to the community and the people, Don was honorably recognized for his contributions. Upon other items, he enjoyed riding as the Wagner Labor Day Parade Marshall as a recognizable figure of the community. A special award Don took pride in was the Governor's Tokeya Mani in South Dakota's Order of the White Buffalo, given by Gov. Frank Farrer on Dec 30, 1970 for his deeds and accomplishments. In the Sioux language, Tokeya Mani is the "one who goes ahead"; giving Don the special acknowledgment that he excelled among his fellow citizens. Don's impact to the community was at large, to say the least.
(because of the length of the obit submitter omitted a few paragraphs about his virtues)
Don is preceded in passing by his parents Gerrit and Gertrude, father and mother-in-law Leon and Freida DeRaad, wife Della JEAN Juffer, son-in-law Ron Williams; and the following brothers and sisters-in-law: Ted and Adeline Juffer of Omaha, NE, Gerald Juffer of Ireton, IA, Preston (Pat) and Betty Juffer of Ireton, IA, Herman Juffer (1st wife Joann Gustafson) of Decorah, IA, Arlin and Pauline of Sibly, IA, Leo Juffer of San Diego, CA, Cliff Young of Onawa, IA, and Phil Abbott of Eagle Grove, IA.
