Moffet, Carmelous C. 1846-1920 and Mary I. Wilson Family

This story was taken from page 439 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknow. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Carmelous C. Moffet was born Apr. 20, 1846 at Bristolville, Oh. When about nine years of age, his parents moved to Topeka, Ks. And later to Scott and Tama Co., Ia. In Dec. 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary I. Wilson and to this union 5 children were born.

About 1876 they moved to Ireton in Sioux Co. and in 1902 moved to Barney, N.D. He passed away in 1920 and the remains were brought to Ireton for burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Rev. J.A. Kettle of the Methodist Church conducted the services. His children are Lester E., Mrs. Mary I. Bailey, Duren W., and Mrs. Al Verda Spohn.

Carmelour Corwin Moffet born 20 Apr 1946 Bristoville, Trumbll, OH died 11 Apr 1920 Barney, Richland, ND. His parents were Erastus Root Moffet 1821-1901 and Rebecca Spitler 1926-1857. He married Mary Izora Willson 22 Dec 1869 Montour Tama IA.

Mary Izora Willson was born 11 Nov 1851 Milledgeville, Carroll IA died 15 Nov 1936 North Platte Lincoln NE. Her parents were Alexis Cran Wilson 1812-1887 and Cloey Elizabeth Bowen 1814-1899.

He married Lillian Harris 1873-1929 and they had children – Florence Pearl Moffet 1894-1901, Gladys Lenora Moffet 1900-1990, Floys Moffet 1901, Corwin Harris Moffett 1902-1975, Ila Donalda Moffitt 1908-1931, Julia Moffet 1909, Verlin Camelous Moffitt 1912-1923, and Arlin Duren Moffitt 1915-1948.
Obit - From the Thursday, February 13, 1947 Hawarden Independent:
Duren Wilson Moffet, former resident of Ireton, who was born Dec. 15, 1870 at Montour, Iowa, the son of Carmelous Corwin and Mary Izora Moffet died at his home near Barney, N. D., Jan. 5 from an illness of a few months with a heart condition suffering several attacks during the past few weeks. In 1876 his family moved to Sac county, Iowa and in 1882 they moved to Ireton living north of town on the Mrs. Julia Opdahl farm at the time. He was married to Lillian Harris at Beresford, S.D., April 6, 1883, six children were born. In September, 1902, he and his family moved to Barney where he has since made his home. Mr. Moffet served on the township board of supervisors for many years and was trustee and treasurer of his church board many years having resigned his treasurer's position a month or so ago on account of ill health. On April 19, 1931 he was married to Sadie E. Elliott who survives him.

2. Lester Eugene Moffet born 29 Dec 1872 Montour, Tama IA died 11 Nov 1941 North Platte NE He married Alice Jeannett Bell 1878-1959, They had chiildren - Grace leone Moffet 1897-1986, Cloey J. Moffet 1899-1990, Jennie Mae Moffet 1902-1996, Tana E. Moffet 1904-1986, Alice Elsie Moffet 1907-1974, and Eugenia Rebecca Moffet 1912-1997.

3. Mary Izora Moffett born 18 Sep 1878 Odebolt, Sac, IA died 16 Feb 1968 Enderlin, Ransom, ND. She married Ernest Eugen Bailey 1879-1950, their children were – Viola Ione Bailey 1901-1979, Marjorie Bailey 1914. Ardyce Moffet Bailey 1914-1995.

4. Gertrude Viola Moffett born 21 Mar 1880 16 Jul 1899 Ireton Sioux county IA. She married Charles Bruce Houlton 1872-1947 and they had one children Baby Houlton 1899-1899.
Houlton, Gertie Viola born 21 Mar 1880 died 16 Jul 1899 19 yr 3 mo 26 days. Buried in Pleasant Hill cemetery Ireton IA as listed in the Sioux County IA cemetery index. No obit was found in the local digital archives.

IA married 6 May 1898 in Centre Tsp Sioux county IA, died 16 Jul 1899 Ireton IA wife of Charles Bruce Houlton 1872-1947 buried in Ireton IA. They had an infant who died 1899 Also. OBITUARY OF CARMELOUS MOFFETT 1848-1920

Carmelous C, Moffet was born April 20, 1846, at Bristolville, Trumble Co., Ohio. When about nine years of age, with his parents moved to Topeka, Kansas, where his mother died in 1857.
Later the family moved to Scott Co. Iowa, going to Tama Co., in 1865, where on December 22nd, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary I. Wilson, and to this union were born five children, one daughter having preceded him to the Heavenly Mansion.
They resided in Sac County, Iowa for seven years coming from there to Sioux County to make their home in this vicinity for nineteen years, going from here to Barney, North Dakota, in 1902. On July 21, 1918, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, with which he had since been helpless and confined to his bed until death came on Thursday morning November 4, 1920. He was converted and joined the M.E. Church while living in Sac County, Iowa and had since been faithful and a conscientious worker in the church and Sunday School being for years a teacher of the adult bible class.
At the time of his death he was 74 years, 6 months and 15 days of age. He leaves to mourn his death his devoted wife, four children, fourteen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Wilson, of Battle Creek, Michigan. The children are Duren W., and Lester E. Moffet, Mrs. Mary L. Baily and Mrs. Alverda G. Spohn all of Barney, North Dakota who were with him constantly during his sickness.
Funeral services were conducted at the home at Barney on Friday, P.M. Rev. Jas. Anderson of Fargo in charge and a choir composed of Mrs. Howard Paul of Wahpeton, Mrs. H.M. Baily of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Rev. Ritter of Wyndmere and George B. Elliot of Barney, accompanied by Steila Stone, rendered beautiful and most appropriate songs. Mrs. Paul also sang a solo.
The remains were brought here to the old town and burial took place on Sunday P.M.Rev. J.A. Kettle, pastor of the M.E. Church conducted the services and many of the old time friends gathered to pay their respects to him who during his residence here was highly esteemed.
Relatives and friends from out of town who were here for the funeral were Mrs. C,C. Moffet, Mrs. E. Baily, Rena and Lester Moffet of Barney, North Dakota, Mrs. John Scott and son, W.H. Scott and R.R. Hatfield of Pierson, Iowa.

Burial Made With Her Husband Here
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church here Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. C. C. Moffet, a former resident near here, who died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. G. Spohn, at North Platte, Neb.
Burial was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery, where her husband was buried 16 years ago.
The Rev. George E. Scheider officiated at the services. Music was by a quartet including Miss Madge Satterlee, Mrs. Arthur Bartlett, E. E. Gandy and Frank Crane.
Born In Illinois
Mary Izora Willson, daughter of Alexius and Cloey Willson, was born Nov. 11, 1851, at Milledgeville, Ill.
When she was a child the family moved to Tama county, Iowa. In that county she was married Dec, 22, 1869, to Cornelius C. Moffet. To them were born five children, of whom four survive.
Children
The surviving children are Duren W. Moffet of Mooreton, N. D., Lester E. Moffet of North Platte, Mary I Bailey of Barney, N. D., and Alverda G. Spohn of North Platte.
A sister, Mrs. Libbie Scott of Pierson, Ia., and 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren also survive.
Came to County
Mr. and Mrs. Moffet and their children came to Sioux county in 1882, taking up their residence on a farm north of Ireton.
They farmed here for 20 years, before they moved to Barney, N. D., where they lived until Mr. Moffet died in 1920.
Since her husband's death Mrs. Moffet had made her home with her daughter in North Platte.

Mrs. Moffet had been a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a faithful worker in its various organizations.
Relatives from out of town attending the funeral services Wednesday included Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Moffet and Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Spohn of North Platte; Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Moffet and Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Bailey, Corwin and Arlin Moffet. and Lee Sparks arid son, Donald, all of Barney, N. D.
Mr. and Mrs. George H. Hatfield of Pierson, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hatfield of Cherokee, Ia., William Scott of Cherokee, Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Moffet of Hudson, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Elliott of Austin, Minn. Mrs. Alice Peters of Lake View, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Green of Alcester, S. D.
Poster's note: Although her obituary says that her husband's name was Cornelius Moffet, his gravestone reads Carmelous.
According to various family trees available on the internet, Mrs. Moffet's mother's maiden name was Cloey Elizabeth Bowen.
