Struck, Cort 1889-1954 & Bertha Zimmerman Family

This story was taken from pages 470-471 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Cort Struck was the son of Chris and Dora Struck and was born in Taylorville Co., Il. on May 14, 1889. During the days of his childhood the Struck family moved to a farm near Ormsby, Mn.

Bertha (Rebecca) Struck, daughter of Richard and Gertrude Zimmerman, was born Nov. 16, 1881 at Nakomis, Il. In 1884 the Zimmerman family came to Ireton where they built the second fair sized house in this young town.

On Feb. 15, 1911 Cort Struck and Bertha Zimmerman were united in marriage. After their marriage they lived at Clearfield, S.D. for two years. They returned to the Ireton area and lived on a farm one mile east and four miles north of town. This farm was owned by Bertha’s parents. A few years later, Cort and Bertha bought a house on Main Street in Ireton which is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Marienau. During that time Mr. Struck worked for the town of Ireton. From 1928 to 1953 they lived in Fairmont, Mn. where Cort was employed as a foreman for the Fairmont Canning Factory. During the summer of 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Struck returned to Ireton and built a new home just west of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where they lived until their death. This house is now the home of the Terry Huitink family. Mr. Struck passed away June 10, 1954 and Mrs. Struck died Dec. 22, 1969. They were the parents of three sons: Elmer, Aaron and Walter.

Walter and his wife Mildred (Vlotho) live on the farm where Cort and Bertha lived when they first came back to the Ireton area. Walter and Mildred are the parents of one son, Dennis.

A new house had been constructed on the Struck farm where Dennis and his wife Berdena (Mills) and their infant son Ryan Lee are making their home. Dennis will be farming the Struck farm that has been in the family for four generations. The other land that he will be farming belonged to his great grandfather, John Vlotho, Sr. (Exact relative author unknown)
