Klave, Rudolph 1863-1941 and Theda Johnson Family

This story was taken from pages 421-422 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Rudolph Klave was born Oct. 19, 1863 to William and Sophie Klave. He came to the U.S. from Germany when he was 3 years old, with his parents, 3 brothers, and 1 sister: Carl “Charley”, Bill, Henry, and Caroline (Steinfadt). Mrs. Harry Johnson was Caroline’s daughter. The family farmed in the Craig area.

Theda Johnson was born Aug. 14, 1873 to Onno and Sophie Johnson in Ostfriesland Ermden, Germany, or East Friesland. She came to America at the age of 18 with her 16 year old brother Henry, to join their brother Onno, who had been working for an uncle in Ill.

Rudolph & Theda were married Dec. 3, 1891 at Grant Twp. Lutheran Church in Plymouth County. They farmed in the Ireton, Hawarden, and eastern S.D. areas.

When they were moving to a S.D. farm, it was muddy and raining, and the older children were small. The wagon, pulled by horses, tipped over and spilled all of their belongings. They took their blankets and walked to their new home. When they came back the next morning, many of their things had been stolen.

The Klaves lived on the Marian Byker farm, Sec. #3 of Washington Twp. for 18 years, paying $3.00 an acre rent. After living on the Ireton farm, they moved to the present Heuer farm, Sec. #29 Eagle Twp. During their farming years they had a lot of trouble. A flood washed all their cows away, their team of horses was struck by lightning, and their cattle died from T.B. In 1927 they had a farm sale and moved to Hawarden.

Their children are: Sophie (Van Wyhe) born Mar. 1893 and lives in Ireton; Lena (Edmunds) born May 1895 lives in Hawarden; Rudy born Oct. 1897 lives in Akron; Annie (Marshall) born Nov. 1899 lives in Sioux City; Mary (Johnson) born May 1901 lives at Brunsville; Onno born Mar. 1903 died Aug. 1976; Lizzie (Short) born June 1905 lives in Hawarden; Albert born June 1907 died Oct. 1978; Martha born Mar. 1910 died Aug. 1920; Esther (Watkins) born May 1912 lives in Hawarden; and Arthur born July 1914 lives in Akron, Ia.

Mr. Klave died Jan. 18, 1941 at the age of 77 in Hawarden. Mrs. Klave died Oct. 1962 at the age of 89, leaving 95 living descendants.
