This story was taken from page 410 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Christian Lorenz Janssen, born in Ostfriesland, Germany, Mar. 28, 1865. He came to the U.S. at the age of 16, and after being employed as a farm-hand in Jones Co., Ia. and near Coleridge, Nb., he bought a farm in Reading Twp., Sec. #29, Sioux Co., Ia., now occupied by Wesley Westra.

Chris married Frauke Friedrichs Mar. 4, 1890 and stayed on the farm until he died June 1933. She moved to Craig and died Mar. 1958. They were members of Christ Lutheran Church, rural LeMars.

They raised 5 children: Henry married Frances Meyer, Katharine married John G. Popken, Sophia married Herman T.H. Wessels, Deidrich “Dick” married Anna Beitelspacher, and Dorette married Ernest C. Meyer.

Frauke Friedrichs was born 15 Feb 1873 Kirchdorferfeld died 25 Mar 1958 Craig Iowa. Her parents were Dirk Friedrichs 1834-died 17 Jul 1881 Kirchdorferfeld Germany and Antje Janssen Gelmers 1840-died 22 Mar 1912 Le Mars IA (source - parents found by way of locating in the 1885 census, and her sister Johanna Friedrichs Mrs. Albert Adden, then finding a report on ancestry.com on the family. Antje later married Henry Seibels born 1846 married 5 Mar 1886 Sioux Co. IA. died 10 Nov 1925 LeMars Iowa ). Marriage record lists Antie Fredrichs parents as John Gellemers and Ann Tresner.

Henry Janssen Henry Janssen, 83, 328 First Ave. NW, Le Mars died Friday (Feb. 7,1975) at his home following an extended illness. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Janssen was born April 3,1891, in Reading township, Sioux county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Janssen. He was married Jan. 9, 1913, to Frances Meyer at Christ Lutheran church, Grant township, by her father, Rev. Johann Meyer. The couple farmed near Ireton until 1938 when they moved to a farm near Le Mars and they retired to Le Mars in 1945. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at St. John American Lutheran church, Le Mars, with Rev. Arnold Imbrock officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Luken-Johnson funeral home. Mr. Janssen was a member of St. John church. Survivors are his wife, Frances, Le Mars ; four daughters, Mrs. George (Martha) Vander Tuig and Mrs. Bill (Leona) Lancaster both of Le Mars; Mrs . Bernie (Marie) Van Roekel, Manson and Mrs. Eugene (Dorothy) Hansen, Cathedral City, Calif; four sons, Alfred, Maurice, Lorenz, Hudson, S.D. ; Elmer, Reno, Nev. and Fred Roseburg, Ore; a brother, Dick Janssen. Hawarden and a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Dorette) Meyer, Le Mars; also 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

2. Antje Katherine Janssen Popken born 9 Nov 1892 Sioux county IA died 19 Nov 1969 Le Mars IA. Marriage record lists Catherine Jansen age 19 born about 1892 Reading Twp Sioux county IA married 27 Apr 1911 Sioux County IA to Johann Popken. Ancestry.com report has John Gerhard Popken born 1886 IA died 19 Oct 1951 Craig IA, and married Antje Katherine Janssen. They had three children – Amanda Margaretha Popken 1912-1984, Mathilda Catharine Popken 1916-2011, Norma Paulina Popken 1917-1999

Katherine Popken, 77, 109 Fourth St. NW, died Wednesday at Floyd Valley hospital after a long illness. Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at St. John American Lutheran church, Le Mars, with Rev. Arnold Imbrock and Rev. Paul Tobiason officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran cemetery, Craig, under direction of the Mauer funeral home, Le Mars. She was born Nov. 9, 1892, in Reading township, Sioux county, to Christian L. and Frauke (Friedricks) Janssen. She married John G. Popken April 27,1911, in Reading township. She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in Grant township until retiring to Craig in 1937. She moved to Le Mars in 1956 and went to Floyd Valley hospital in December 1968. She was a member of St. John American Lutheran church, Le Mars. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1951, and a sister, Mrs. Herman Wessels. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Amanda) Oltmanns and Norma Popken, both of Le Mars. Mrs. Roy (Esther) Janssen of Worthington and Mrs. Harry (Mathilda) Johnson, Fort Dodge; two brothers, Henry of Le Mars and Dick of Hawarden; one sister, Mrs. Ernest (Dorette) Meyer of Le Mars; 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

3. Sophia Marie Janssen Wessels Mrs. Hermann Wessels born 7 Aug 1895 died 1 Aug 1965 LeMars IA. Herman Wessells 1871-1962 Four children Armin 1823, Alma 1925 and two others.
Obituary - LeMars Daily Sentinel of Aug 2, 1965 Mrs. Herman Wessels dies at Hospital after short illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Herman Wessels 69, who died at Sacred heart hospital Sunday, will be at 2 p.,. Wednesday at St. John American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. L. L. Belk will officiate and burial well be in LeMars memorial cemetery under the direction of the Coop funeral home at Sioux Center. Mrs. Wessels suffered a stroke several weeks ago and had been hospitalized since. Sophia Janssen the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christ Janssen was born Aug 17, 1896, in Sioux County near Hawarden. She lived all her life in and around LeMars moving to Le Mars in 1858. She attended schools in Grant township. On Feb 12, 1920, she was untied in marriage with Herman Wessels. Their home is at 109 Third Ave SE. Mrs. Wessels was a member of St. John’s Church and Doras Circle. Surviving are three daughters; Mrs. Alma Westergard, Hawarden; Mrs. Bernice Bowden, El Sagundo, Calif.; and Mrs. Evelyn Koerner, Holtville, Calif.; two sons, Leonard of Ireton and Armin of L e Mars. There are 12 surviving grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Popken and Mrs. Ernest Meyer, both of Le Mars, and two brothers, Henry Janssen, Le Mars, and Dick Janssen, Hawarden.

4. Dietrich Heinrich Jannsen Find A Grave lists Dietrich Heinrich Janssen born 29 Oct 1899 Ireton IA died 16 Jul 1980 Hawarden IA wife Anna Margaret Janssen. Children Melvin Frederich Janssen, Walter Henry Janssen. and Velma Marie Flora Moller.
Obituary -Dick H. Janssen, 80, of Hawarden, died July 16 at the Hawarden hospital. The Services were held in the American Lutheran Church at Hawarden on Saturday with Rev. Robert D. Hansen officiating. Burial was in Grants township cemetery of rural Craig.. Dick Janssen was born October 29, 1899, in Sioux County. He married Anna Beitelspacher on January 12, 1922, in Grants township. They farmed in the Ireton area before retiring and moving into Hawarden in 1964. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church. - Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Velma) Moeller of Alcester; five sons, Lester and Kenneth both of Hawarden, Walter of Mission Hills, California; Melvin of Rock Rapids and Harold of Ireton. Also 21 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Doretta) Meyer of Le Mars. Source Rock Valley Bee of July 24, 1980.

5. Dorette Janssen Meyer born Sept. 6, 1904 Sioux County IA, died July 16, 1986 Le Mars Iowa .
Obituary - Dorette Meyer, 81, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, July 16, 1986, in a Le Mars hospital following a long illness. Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, in Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars. Rev. Jack Hebard officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Meyer, the former Dorette Janssen, was born Sept. 6, 1904, in Sioux County. She married Ernest Meyer February 8, 1923, in Sioux County. They farmed in the area, moving to Le Mars in 1956. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and American Lutheran Church Women. Survivors include her husband; a son, Edwin of Ireton; two daughters, Mrs. Marlin (Elnora) Borchers of Akron and Mrs. Marvin (Laura) Siebels of Costa Mesa, CA; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Obituary of C. L Janssen
Christian Lorenz Janssen, son of Henrich Janssen and Marie Sophie Post, was born March 28, 1865, at Rispel Ostenfriesland, Germany, the third children in a family of nine children, two girls and seven boys. He passed away at his home, southeast of Ireton, June 23, 1933. He received his schooling and was confirmed at Lehrhane. At the age of 16 he left his native land, having had a desire to locate in America. He landed in the United States in 1881, locating in Jones county, Iowa. Later he moved to Coleridge, Nebraska and then to Sioux county where he purchased a fine farm in southeast Reading township and by hard work and saving and splendid judgment he soon added to his possessions and at the time of his death, he had 520 acres to his credit. On March 4, 1890, he was united in marriage with Frauke Frederichs and to this union five children were born. The children are Henry, Mrs. John G. Popken, Mrs. Herman Wessels, Dick and Mrs. Ernest Meyer, all of them living in this vicinity. His is the first death among his brothers and sisters and his own immediate family. Besides his widow and children he leaves seven brothers and two sisters, John and Julif of Coleridge, Nebraska, Mrs. James Steffens of Hartington, Nebraska; Henry of Herkimer, Kansas, and the others in Germany. There are also 25 grandchildren.

OBITUARY OF FROUKE JANSSEN 1874-1958

Mrs. F. Janssen, 84 of Craig passed away Tuesday, March 25, 1958 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Meyer in Le Mars after several weeks of illness. She was born Feb 1874 in Germany. At the age of 9, she with her mother, 2 sisters and 2 brothers immigrated to the United States. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
On March 4th 1890 she was untied in marriage with Christian L. Janssen. To this union was born five children. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jun 23rd 1933. She resided on the farm in Reading township until the year 1941 when she moved to Craig. She enjoyed good health until Mary of 1957. Then on Dec 10 her health failing she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Meyer of Le Mars.
She remained a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Dorcas Society.
Survivors include 2 sons and 3 daughters namely: Henry of Le Mars, Mrs. Katherine Popken of Le Mars, Mrs. Sophie Wessels of Ireton; Dick of Ireton and Mrs. Ernest Meyer of Le Mars.
Funeral services will be held Friday at one o’clock in the afternoon at the Ernest Meyer residence at 33 4th St. N.W. and 2 o’clock at Christ Lutheran Church Grant township with Rev. B. Nagel officiating. The six grandsons will act as pallbearers. Burial will be under the direction of the Sioux Center Burial Association.
