Article on ‘More Early History – Facts concerning the settlement of Grant Township’
Paragraphs relating to Isaac Follett.
Ammon Damon came in the spring of 1871. Those the wintered in Grant township in 1871 and 1872, as far as I can learn were the following: The Greattrax family, Dr. Beals, Frank Bashford, the Nugent family, Uriah Harmon, Robert Sturgeon, Morgan Dibble, C. E. Johnson, E. and George Berry, Mr. Patmitier, Robert Lynch, Isaac Follet, Ammon Damon, Daniel House, Theodore De Long, Myron Damon, Robert Allen and Charles Wanner.
Commencing - Article speaks of a terrible blizzard Jan 7, 1873 He was on horse back and arrived home towards night, but he had a narrow escape from perishing in the storm. When he got home he found that his Children had not yet got home from school, and of course it was a night of worry and doubt as to their safety. The next morning at daylight his son Frank was heard hollering near the house, was answered and taken in nearly chilled to death. He had left the other children at the school house and Mr. Lynch, Mr. Walker and Fred went to the school for the children, and after considerable trouble and suffering got them all home. They were found in a bad condition without any fire in the room and nearly frozen. Isaac Follet the evening before had taken his children and the teacher to his house. Why a school teacher would desert the school house and leave any children there to spend the night in such a place with a storm like that, is unaccountable. (account is a bit confusing)

Isaac Follett , living southeast of town, drove to Lyon county the fore part of the week and bought some seed corn. He stored it in the granary over night and the next morning when he went to get it, it was gone. Some miscreant (depraved – villainous) surely got the best of him this time.

1908 Sioux County Atlas Early Days in Grant Township - article by Mrs. James Brewster
First two paragraphs – The story of the early settlement of northwestern Iowa will never be written so as to convey any definite idea of privations and hardships of the early settlers. The pioneers were too busy breaking prairie and rearing homes to pay much attention to recording passing events, and now, after the lapse of thirty five or six years, it is hard to write concisely Grant Township’s early history. The first to settle in Grant township were Wm. Greattrax, Isaac Follet and Wm. Brewster in the summer of 1870. Wm. Greattrax camped and broke prairie on the north half of the southwest quarter of section 28 (place now owned by Mr. Van Drager – in 1908). Mr. Greattrax and Mrs. Follett and their families were the only ones to stay in the township during the winter of 1870-1871. Wm. Brewster returned to Canada in the fall.
