Brown, John 1827-1910 and Margaret Frew Family

This biography was created by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Iowa Genealogical Society from several sources and named. Some research notes were added.

There was no written story of their life found in print, just an obituary and the poster of the obit’s comments as she was the great great grand daughter of John and Margaret Brown. Therefore, the obit and 2nd great grand daughter, Janet Brown’s comments head this biography.

From the March 26, 1910 Alton Democrat:
John Brown died at Ireton March eighteenth. He was born at Alleghany City Pennsylvania eighty three years ago and had lived in Sioux county twenty three years. He was married in 1852 to Margaret Frew and again in 1884 to Mrs. Slaughter. He was the father of ten children by his first marriage. His second wife and six children mourn him. The children are William and George and James of Ireton, Alex of Marcus, Mesdames Kline and Henderson of Gladbrook. Rev, Creswell of the Presbyterian church conducted funeral services Monday. Interment was made at Amity in Tama county.

Poster's note by Janet Brown of Ireton: This is my great-great-grandfather. He was born on June 16, 1827 in Allegheny City, the son of Catherine (Trimble) and Peter Brown. He married Margaret Frew on September 30, 1852 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He and Margaret moved to Middlesex Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania about 1855 where he operated his father's farm. During the Civil War, he first served a brief enlistment in the 56th Pennsylvania militia before enlisting in Co. F. of the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on August 29, 1864. He was mustered out on June 13, 1865. After his father's death, the family moved to Tama County, Iowa in 1876 where he farmed. After his first wife's death, he and his second wife and his five living sons moved to Northwest Iowa in 1887 where all but son Alex purchased land near Ireton (Alex purchased land in Cherokee county). Ireton was chosen because there was a Presbyterian church in town. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Frew in 1883; by son John Alexander Brown as an infant in 1855 in Pennsylvania; daughter Margaret Brown as an infant in 1871 in Pennsylvania; son John Jamison Brown (1860-1884) in Tama County. He was also survived by son Robert C. Brown who lived near Ireton in 1910 (his name was omitted from the obituary).
