De Zeeuw, Pleun 1812-1899 and Elizabeth De Haan Family

This biography and family history was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and taken from various identified sources. The purpose was to find as much about the Pleun De Zeeuw family that was available from local sources. When family information is taken from various sources it is often found that the information varies from one source to another. Often birth places and dates are listed differently in various family reports. The information in this biography was stated as found in the source addressed.

A semblance of the life and times of Sioux County pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk which gives a very colorful account of pioneer life with its joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis gives great historical accounts of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County. Also, the ‘Sioux County Iowa digital archives’ newspapers can be googled as such, and can be searched for pioneer's names that could lead to more items of interest in their daily life.

A written biography was not found for Pleum de Zeeuw. Information can be obtained from the obits of his children and from research of the family as presented in a report on ancestry.com that was submitted by others and not proofed by this submitter. Family can be followed in the census, immigration and church records. They were just hard working farmers trying to raise their families from the soil of Sioux county. Not much was publicized about there everyday life. Some of their older children lived and died young, or married and died in the Netherlands. See the children’s family reports below.

Sioux Center Nieuwsblad of Apr 1, 1914 (in Dutch) Translated: Obituary message
Wednesday evening, March 25, quietly sleeping in his Savior, Jan De Zeeuw, in the late age of 70 years, leaving a sorrowful widow, 10 children, all adults and some married, two brothers and one sister. Born in the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, he moved with his parents as a youth to Pella IA in 1870 and in 1871 to Sioux County, where the family settled near Middleburg. He was therefore one of the pioneers. In 1876 he married Driesje Sneller, who now survives him with her children. First at Alton, they have lived in Sioux Center vicinity for the last 29 years and were members of First Ref. Church. From childhood the deceased brother feared the Lord and desired to serve Him. This he also sought to do, but sometimes complained about the imperfection of that service. For twenty years he has served the church as a faithful servant and able old man. He sought to win all to Jesus Christ and enticed them with the loveliness and excellency of the Lord's service which himself felt. He was given a steadfast confidence. He knew in whom he believed.
In his own household he was a fearful husband and father, held in high esteem and tenderly loved. Last fall he suffered a stroke. Family then feared that he was going to die. However, the hope of recovery began to revive a little later. It was not realized, in all his suffering this was his consolation: The Lord is near to the soul that sighs to Him. He comforts the heart that flees to Him weeping. He now rests from his labors, and his weeks follow with him. By his faith he still speaks after he has died. The neighbors, friends and all relations are kindly thanked for all the expressions of sympathy and assistance during his illness, death and funeral. On behalf of the family and at their request, F. Lubbers
