VanderAarde, Bastiaan 1830-1921 and #2 Agatha Eriks Family

This biography was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and taken from various identified sources. The purpose was to find as much about the Bastiaan Vander Aarde family, Sioux County settlers, that was available from local sources. When family information is taken from various sources it is often found that the information varies from one source to another. Often birth places and dates are listed differently in various family reports. The information in this biography was stated as found in the source addressed.

A semblance of the life and times of Sioux County pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk which gives a very colorful account of pioneer life with its joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis gives great historical accounts of the area. The Orange City Centennial Book 1870-1970 has Orange City town history. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County. Also, the ‘Sioux County Iowa digital archives’ newspapers can be googled as such, and can be searched for pioneer's names that could lead to more items of interest in their daily life.

In the Orange City Centennial Book 1870-1970 page 55, has a picture of them and a brief story. Bastiaan and Agatha Vander Aarde sr. and children Klaas, Pieter, Aafje (Mrs. Jake Borgman) Anne, Trynkte, Bastiaan Jr., migrated to America from the Netherlands in 1874 and came to Orange City. They bought the 80 acres first southeast of Orange City known as the VanderAarde addition. Their occupation was mostly farming and dairy business. In 1890 a brick factory was started, located first north of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks on the Vander Aarde Addition. Bastiaan jr. also worked in this new business. The only remaining house of these bricks is owned by Northwestern College today. In 1896 it was forced out of business because of the depression. Two children born in Orange City are Elizabeth (Mrs. Herman TePaske) and Gerrit.

Miss Dora Van der Aarde, whose serious illness has been mentioned from time to time in the columns of THE HERALD, peacefully passed away last Saturday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the home of her parents, Mr, and Mrs. B. A. Van der Aarde, in the south part of the city. She was twenty-one years of age and her death was caused by that dread disease, consumption. During her long illness she bore her intense sufferings patiently and uncomplainingly and she was wholly resigned to the fate which she knew, at no distant day, awaited her. Deceased was a true Christian and devoted much of her time to the unbuilding of the cause of Christ, She was a member of the First Reformed church, the society of Christian Endeavor and of the Mission Band, and her pure Christian life was one worthy of emulation by others. Miss Van der Aarde grew to womanhood in our midst and her womanly, unselfish disposition and kindness of heart endeared to all who knew her. Hence her death not only brought deep sorrow to the members of her family but to the entire Community as well, by which she will be greatly missed. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, at 1 o'clock from the family residence and at 2 o'clock from the First Reformed church, Rev. M. Kolyn conducting both services, and the unusually large attendance was indicative the high esteem in which deceased was held. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken family.
