Alton Democrat November 22, 1935
PAT ALLEN GONE
Patrick Allen, aged Alton citizen, passed away at his home at Alton Wednesday night, November 20th
(Cemetery Index lists Patrick Allen 1842-1935)
Alton Democrat of Oct 29, 1935 page 1. and page 4. (Misprint in the paper should be Nov 29,1935. Patrick Allen in Terrible Chicago Fire: 1875 Patrick Allen, oldest Alton citizen and pioneer resident, died at his home here Nov 20, at the age of 93 years, after an illness of 7 months. To the last he retained is keen mental faculties, and during this last months was able to give to his family many of the memories of the absorbing events through which he passed during his long span of life.Born at Chesterville, Ontario, Canada, on march 17, 1842, he left his home in 1865 at the age of 23, to work in the lumber camps of northern Michigan. Rising at two in the morning, workmen in those camps labored in the swamps often in water waist deep. Two fellow workmen in the northern woods, Michael Kinney and Paul Ludowisse, later became like Mr. Allen pioneer settlers of Sioux County.
In 1870 he went to Chicago where he was employed in a lumber and coal office. During the great fire of 1871 for three days and nights he did rescue work, removing hundreds of children from the fire devastated districts to safety. Planks were laid on coal carts, so that several children could be carried at on time. During that time he lent to homeless families all of the $500 which he had saved from his earnings. Although he never made any effort in later years to collect these loans, every cent was returned to him, though many of the people to whom he lent money were entire strangers to him.
In 1873 he was married to Miss Margaret Carroll of Chesterville, his home town in Ontario. They lived in Chicago until 1875, when on March 18 they set out on the overland trip to Iowa. At Storm Lake they were compelled to dig their way through twelve feet of snow. They homesteaded south east of Alton. Their older children remember some of the hardships of those early days, when prairie hay painstakingly twisted into bundles, was often the only available fuel during the long winters. The nearest Catholic church was in Le Mars, and it was their custom on Sunday to rise during the small hours in the morning to prepare for the trip to Le Mars by oxen, as they had no horses. After church and lunch in Le Mars the return trip required the entire afternoon and they would arrive home at sundown.
Nine children were born to the couple: Michael Allen of Faulkton SD; Mrs. Theodore Wagner and Will Allen of Alton; Mrs. Don Gaffeny and Mrs. E. B. Niemeyer of Faulton SD; Frank D. Allen of Alton, George Allen of Woonsocket, who died a year ago, and two children, John and Mary who died during early childhood in 1886 during an epidemic.
Mrs. Allen died in January, 1890.In 1893 he married Miss Rose Coyne of Chicago. Their marriage took place at Dunlap, IA. To this union one child was born, Joseph Allen, who was reared by his mother’s people and now resides in Pittsburg, PA. This son arrived in Alton Saturday morning after traveling by airplane to Sioux City. He is now making the acquaintance of his half brothers and sisters whom he had never seen, although for twenty years his oldest sister, Mrs. Wagner, has kept in touch with him by correspondence. His mother died in 1896.
In the year 1913 Mr. Allen moved to Alton where he has since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Will Allen having made their home with him in recent years. His interest in his family in the public affairs of his adopted country, as well as those of his town town, have continued through the years. Although bedridden at the time of the town election for new city hall bonds, he was eager to cast his vote and was pleased to have had a share in carrying the project by his absent voter ballot.Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church Saturday at nine o’clock in charge of Very Rev. M. A. Schemel. There are eighteen grandchildren and 5 great grandsons, the youngest named for his grandfather, Patrick Allen.
Besides all the children and their families here for the funeral a long list followed with names of relatives and friend present from out of town.OBITUARY of Margaret Mrs. Patrick Allen 1851-1890
