This BIOS for the John Jemming family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. The life and times of Sioux County pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk gives a very colorful account of pioneer life with its joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis gives a great historical accounts of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County. Also, reference the Hospers Centennial Book of Hospers 1891-1991.

John P. Jemming born about 1830 Luxemburg died 14 Oct 1914 Floyd Township, Hospers IA. He was the son of Dominic (Gemmeng) Jemming 1785-1855 and Margaret Meis 1790-1865.
At LaSelle County Illinois in 1866 he married Margareth Paulus born Nov 1847 Luxembourg She died 27 Sep 1923 at Hospers Iowa. 1860 census of Fredonia, Ozaukee, WI has her at 13 years. Her parents were Nicholas Paulus 1812-1885 and Anna Wieland 1818-1902.

In the 1860 census of Fredonia Ozaukee, Wisconsin Margaretta Paulus was age 13, born in Luxembourg. Father was Nicolas Paulus born abt 1812 Luxembourg, mother was Anna born abt 1818 Luxembourg and children were: Jean 16, Jenn Pierre 14, Margaretta 13, Michael 7, Albert 6 and Josephine 1. A son Peter was born June of 1860.

1. John Jemming 1870 Illinois died 9 Mar 1913 Sioux Co. IA married 28 Jan 1896, Wife Josephine Tastove born 1874 died Feb 1901 of consumption. He was alive at death of his father 1914. They had a daughter Philamena born 1896
2. Dominic Jemming 1871 died after 1924 Living in Wisconsin in 1914 In 1930 census of Port Washington Ozaukee WI Dominic Jemmings born abt 1870 60 years was a boarder at Mayer Hotel, single a laborer, No further information found. 1923 he was living in Hospers.
3. Mike H. Jemming 1873-1913 born Nov 29, 1872 died 1913 buried in St. Anthony’s cemetery Hospers IA No obit was found in the local papers. Note: In a report of ancestry.com (done by others) Mike H. Jemming was born November 29, 1872 to John and Margartha Jemming. He married Elizabeth Tastove on August 22, 1898 in Hospers IA. She died Oct 22, 1902 and is buried in Hospers, IA. They have a son Frank George born 1900. Also son John H. Jemming 1899-1918
4. Albert Nickolas Jemming 1874-1943 Find A Grave Albert N. Jemming born 1874 died 1943 buried in St. Joseph cemetery Granville, IA Wife was Sophia Margaretha Pohlen Jemming 1879-1958 Children listed were Elizabeth Margaret Christensen, James W. Jemming, Clara Mary Cleveland, and Lawrence Joseph Jemming. In the St. Joseph’s Church book page 120 Albert Jemming funeral services were held for Albert Jemming. Jamuary 25, 1943 in the chapel of St. Joseph’s School. He was survived by six children: Arthur, Lawarence, Henry, James, Elizabeth, and Clara. He was a retired farmer who made his home in Granville. He worked by day as health permitted. In the Jan 28th issue of the Sioux Center News, reported the death of Albert Jemming 65 of apparent suicide. He lived alone he was survived by three children and had been divorced from his wife. Personal finances was the motive.
5. Nicholas ‘Nick’ Jemming 1876-1896 From the Alton Democrat of March 14, 1896
Hospers News. Nicholas Jemming aged 19 years, died Wednesday morning of Diphtheria. He was buried in the Catholic Cemetery Thursday morning. the Rev. Father Trumm officiating. Our sincere sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents and relatives.
6. Peter D. Jemming born 29 Nov 1879 Illinois - Mar 9, 1913 Source: Alton Democrat issue of 15 Mar 1913, Alton column. Peter D. Jemming died at his home at Hospers on Sunday March 9th of kidney trouble. Mr. Jemming was born at LaSalle Illinois on November 29th 1879. The funeral services were held from St. Anthony's Catholic church at Hospers on Wednesday of this week and a number from Alton were up to attend the funeral. Deceased is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Jemming and six brothers.
7. Frank Jemming born March 1885 Iowa 1913 he was at Ethan SD, In 1915 working at Bird Island MN. 1921 was at Bird Island MN. June 1926 he and brother Albert fined for bootlegging in Alton IA. Nothing more could readily be found on Frank Jemming, seems he was a single laborer, possibly died and was buried in Sioux County, In 1923 per his mother’s obit he was thought to be living in Minneapolis MN. No record of his death found.

John Jemming died at his home in Hospers on Wednesday Oct. 14, from weaknesses brought on by old age. Deceased was born in Goeblingen, Germany on February 13th, 1829 and came to the United States about sixty years ago. In 1880 he settled in Sioux county where he engaged in farming. On March 22nd, 1866, at La Salle, Ill., he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Paulus. This union was blessed with eight children, three of whom survive Funeral services will be held from St. Anthony's church on this Saturday and the services will be in charge of Rev. H.J. Dries. Interment will be made at Hospers, Iowa. The surviving children are N.J. Paulus of Fredonia, Wisc., Frank Jemming of Bird Island, Minn., and John Jemming of White Lake, S.D.

Long Time Hospers Citizen Gone Mrs. John Jemming, Sr. Pioneer Laid to Rest – Hospers News of the week. A few minutes before noon on Thursday the community was grieved to hear the bells toll for the passing away of Mrs. John Jemming, Sr. She had been an invalid for about a year and was nearly 75 years of age. She was born in Decada, Wis. It has been some 45 years since she came from Illinois to this community with her husband who preceded her in death nine years. They were among the early pioneers and spent practically their whole lives on the farm they homesteaded. Eight children were born to them, all of whom were boys with the exception of the first child which died at birth.
The boys are John and Dominic residing here, Mike, deceased. Albert residing at Granville, Nick and Peter, deceased and Frank who it is presumed lives in Minneapolis. The whereabouts of the latter could not be ascertained at this time. The funeral services were held on Saturday morning from St. Anthony’s church of which Mrs. Jemming was a devout member. She will be greatly missed as her resignation and cheerfulness were her characteristics and we join the friends of the family in extending condolence to the bereaved relatives. Those from away to attend were; Barney Moes, Mrs. Pete Moes and Mrs. Maggie Winkle of Granville, Mr. Nick Croat of Alton and Nick Paulus a brother of the deceased from Graceville, MN.
