Peter Ney 1841-1913 and Catherine Hilger Family

This BIOS for the Peter Ney family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Their family information and stories of the life and times of those pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk give a very colorful account of pioneer life with it joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis give a great historical account of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County.

Some family information was obtained from a report on ancesty.com (submitted by others). Ney, Peter born 6 Nov 1841 Turtange Mersch Luxembourg died 28 Jul 1913 buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. His parents were Frederich Ney 1802-1872 and Marie Schneider 1815-1894. His married Catherine Hilger 30 Apr 1872 Cook County IL. .

Catherine Hilger was born 28 Jan 1840 Nospelt, Capellen, Luxembourg and died 10 Feb 1894 Granville, Iowa Her parents were Frederic F. Hilger 1809-1892 and Anna Margaret Ney 1809-1858
Peter and Catherine Ney had two sons: Michael Ney 1874-1965 and John Ney 1878 -1959 Their obits can be found toward the end of this narrative.

Peter Ney was born Nov 6, 1841 in Tuntange, Luxembourg and emigrated to America in 1868. He was with the first group of Luxemburg pioneers leaving St. Donatus, Iowa in Jackson county, on May 2nd, arriving in Sioux county on May 20, 1870.

They crossed the state of Iowa in ox drawn covered wagons. Peter homesteaded in Floyd township three miles north and one half east of what later was named Granville and built a small sod shanty on his claim. The farm is presently owned by Ted Ney. (at time of book published date)

After the big Chicago fire on October 8th and 9th of 1871, Peter went to Chicago for work. On April 30 1872 Peter and Catherine Hilgert were married at St. Henry Catholic Church Chicago IL. They returned to Iowa to farm his land.

Catherine was born on Jan 25, 1840 in Nospelt, Luxemburg and emigrated to America in March of 1868 (or 1861) . They had two children, Michael and John. In 1887, Peter bought a farm on the south edge of Granville and in 1890 the family moved there. It is presently farmed by Pat Ney.
Catherine passed away on Feb 10, 1894 and Peter on July 28, 1913 in a fatal accident while harvesting grain.

OBITUARY DEATH of Peter Nye /Ney Alton Democrat of Aug 2, 1913 page 7 The community was shocked when the news spread of the accidental death of Peter Nye (Ney) which occurred on his farm on the border of town. It seems that Mr. Nye was unhitching a team of horses when they started, and pulled the line which turned the horses toward him, knocking him down and the rear wheel passing over his chest causing instant death. Peter Nye was 74 years of age and one of the pioneer settlers of Sioux County and leaves to mourn his loss two sons, John and Michel of this place.

Mrs. Peter Ney died Friday night after a sickness of a few weeks. She leaves a husband and two grown sons to mourn her loss. The funeral took place Sunday.

OBITUARY DEATH of Ney, Michael born 1873 died 1965 buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA Alton Democrat Thursday 25, 1965
Mike Ney, 92, passed away in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Le Mars Wednesday morning, Nov. 17, at 3:00 o'clock, following a 6 weeks illness. He was born Sept. 29, 1873, at Granville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ney, where he attended rural schools. He farmed in the Granville and Primghar community, until retiring and the past two years he made his home with a nephew, the Joe Ney family near Sheldon. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Granville, Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock, Rev. N. J. Becker officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen in charge of arrangements. He is survived by one brother, John Ney, of Granville, 5 nieces and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Pallbearers were Lawrence Spieler, Bruce Vosburg, Nic Didier, Arnold Hoefler, Ray Grady, Jolin Schwarz.

OBITUARY DEATH of John Ney 1878-1969 Source: Sioux Center News (12-4-1969) Born: April 1, 1878 Died: 1969
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville at 10 A.M. Monday, December 1, for John Ney, 91, lifelong Granville resident, who died at a Primghar Nursing Home.
Services were conducted by the Reverend N.J. Becker and burial was made in the parish cemetery in Granville under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa. Rosary was recited at Spalding Hall Sunday at 5, 8, 8:30 and 9 P.M.
Mr. Ney was born April 1, 1878, at Granville and farmed in the Granville area until retiring. He married Mary Klein April 26, 1904, at Granville. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include five sons, Theodore, Lawrence and Jack, all of Granville; Tony of Primghar, and Joe of Sheldon; five daughters, Mrs. C.N. Graff of Onawa, Mrs. Louis Meinen of Ashton, and Mrs. Ed Koob, Mrs. Milo Koob and Mrs. Abe Penning, all of Granville; 60 grandchildren, and 91 great-grandchildren.
