VanZyl, Bart 1827-1881 and Tryntje Koutstaal Family

This BIOS on the Bart Van Zyl Family, early 1870s Hospers – Newkirk area pioneers was compiled from several sources by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Birth - Bart Van Zijl was born 9 Apr 1827 at Tenhoven, Utrechts, Netherlands to Roelof van Zijl and Jannigje de Jong.
Marriage - Bart Van Zijl born at Tenhoven age 28 married Trijntje Koutstaal born at Vlist age 27, He was the son of Roelof van Zijl and Jannigje de Jongh, she was the daughter of Cornelis Koutstaal and Marrigje Prins, they were married 14 Dec 1855 at Bergambacht, Zuid Holland, Netherlands.
Birth - Trijntje Koutstaal was born 20 Oct 1828 at Vlist Zuid Holland, Netherlands to Cornelis Koutstaal and Marrigje Prins
IMMIGRATION RECORDS on ancestry.com has Bart Vanzijlen age 28 born about 1828 arrived 1856 at New York, with wife Rijntje and son Rudolph. View of the page lists Bart Van Zyllen, Dutch age 28, abt 1828 of Holland departed from LeHarve, France for New York arrived on 3 May 1856, on the ship Fairfield

RESEARCH NOTES:

In the book Souvenir History of Pella Iowa on page 94 – 98 it lists the arrivals from Holland in 1856, among them was Mr. and Mrs. Bart Van Zyl.

The 1860 census of Lake Prairie Marion County IA lists – Albertus van Zijl age 33 a laborer, wife Tryntje age 32 and son Roelof age 2. Their personal estate was $25. (no mention of the son, Roelof born in the Netherlands before arrival in 1856, he must have died before 1858)

In the Book Story of Sioux County by Charles Dyke 1942 page 566 There is a list taken from the Souvenir history of Pella IA, of all the names of those who, with their families, left Pella by wagon train for their new homes in Sioux county in the spring of 1870. Among the names was that of Bart Van Zyl.

The 1880 census of Holland Township Sioux County, lists Bart Van Zyl age 53 a farmer, wife Tryntje age 51 keeping house, son Rulof age 21, Jannetje age 15, Cornelis age 14.

1 . Roelof Van Zyl born before May 1856 as was listed on immigration record. Died after 1856 before 1858 at Pella IA
2 . Roelof Van Zyl born Jun 1857 Pella, Marion Co. IA died 10 Oct 1936 Sioux IA His wife was Johanna Van Boven. See his obituary at www.iagenweb.org/boards/sioux/obituaries/index . A paragraph was inserted here. Born at Pella in the year 1858, he came to Sioux county with his parents when 12 years of age in the year 1871. The family settled on a farm two and one-half miles south of Newkirk and passed through the hardships of pioneer life and grasshopper scourges that created untold want and suffering among these early settlers. His son Guy now operates the farm across the road from the original homestead northeast of Alton.
3 . Mary Van Zyl born 2 Jul 1861 Pella, IA died 16 Feb 1946 Boyden IA Her husband was Christiaan Jacobs 1861-1946. See her obituary at the above address for Roelof’s obit.
4 . Cornelius born 1863 Pella IA died there before 1866.
5 . Jennie ‘Jane’ Van Zyl born Sept 1864 Pella IA died 17 Mar 1926 Hull IA. Husband Henry Vant Hof. 1900 census Henry VantHof 35 wife Jennie 35 children Artie 4 and Katie 1 were living in Capel Tsp, Sioux county IA. He died 1906 out west for health reasons, children were Artie 13, katie 11, Alice 7 and Bert 4. Jennie’s second marriage was to Douwe Vander Schaaf. See obit for Jennie VanderSchaaf 1864-1926
6 . Cornelius Van Zyl born 21 Mar 1866 Pella IA died late April 1941 His wife was Helena Van Es See his obit at the afore mentioned site.

Since Bart died May 1881 not much more could be found about this pioneering farmer who ended up in Sioux County Iowa with his family. He would have born the many pioneer hardships that plagued the early pioneers, however steadfast in the resolve to make a better future for his family. Reading the obits of his children may help describe the early Sioux County days. Death cemetery record list Bart Van Zyl born 9 Apr 1827 died 15 May 1881 age 54 buried Orange City IA buried in Bk4, Lot 17 in the Orange City cemetery. The family was associated with the Newkirk- Hospers area.

Source: Sioux County Herald (5-19-1881) Born: April 9, 1827 Died: May 15, 1881 Bart Van Zyl, an old gentleman, age 54 years, one of the oldest settlers in the county, died Sunday, May 15, and was buried Tuesday. Deceased died of dropsy of the kidneys.
Note: He was an 1870 pioneer of Sioux County, Iowa. His parents were Roelof van Zijl and Jannigje de Jong [or Jongh].
He and his wife, Tryntje (Koutstaal) Van Zyl, had 6 children, two of them , Roelof b. 1856 and Cornelis, b. 1863, dying in infancy. A son, Roelof, born 1857 and a Cornelius born 1866, did survive as well as two daughters Mary 1861-1946, and Jannetje 1864-1926.

The widow Van Zyl died at Newkirk Tuesday age seventy three. She was the mother of R. Van Zyl of Newkirk, C. Van Zyl of Hospers and Mesdames Chris Jacobs and Henry Vant Hof of north Sioux County.
From the De Volksvriend of Jan 2, 1902 Page 5 In Dutch: Translation: On Tuesday in Newkirk, aged 73, the widow Van Zijl, whose serious illness is marked in Newkirk's correspondence, passed away. Also page 8 under Newkirk news was a small article - Mrs. Van Zyl has been declining rapidly in body strength in recent days. We hope that God may still extend her life for her children and God's congregation, for which she has a very warm heart.
