This story was taken from page 129 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.
DANIEL JEROME MURPHY was born in Shullsburg, Wisconsin in 1866. The family moved to the Hull vicinity when he was a young boy. He farmed near Hull and was married to ROSE KATHERINE GACKE June 26, 1900. Dan passed away December 22, 1914 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Hull, Iowa.
Rose K. Gacke was born in Burlington, Wisconsin December 14, 1878 and came to Iowa at an early age. She died February 5, 1952 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Hull, Iowa. They were the parents of four children.
1. LAWRENCE MATTHEW died at the age of 50 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Hull.
2. ELNORA CECILIA is living in Sheldon, Iowa and was married to Harry Fiebig from Sheldon on September 13, 1960. Harry passed away April 5, 1972.
3. EVA BERNIECE married Daniel Kramme from Hartley, Iowa June 27, 1955 at Rock Valley and they are now living in Ashton, Iowa.
4. NICHOLAS GREGORY born 1911 married Louise Agnes De Zoete from Rock Valley, in St. Joseph’s Church at Hull, November 16, 1937. The family lived 21 years on the farm near Hull. After the death of Nicholas, August 12, 1958, Louise and the family moved to California. The children of this marriage are:
Roseanne who married Nieves Fredericks. They adopted two children, Ivy and Penny.
Jerome married Carol Summers. Their children are, Debbie, Cheri, Julie, Daniel and Bryan Roen (son of Debbie).
Mary Ellen married Edward De Renzis. Children from this union are Todd and Darin.
Dennis married Judy Sivley and their children are, Kathy, Patty, Kristin and Michelle.
Norbert married Jean Pippin. Their children are Greg and Brian.
Eugene married Pauline Doogh. The children from this union are Donna, Annette and Nicholas.

Died December 22, 1914 at the age of 48 years and 4 Months.
In March 1881 Mr. Murphy came to Iowa with his father and the family located on a farm northeast of Hull. In June 1900 Mr.. Murphy was united in marriage to Miss Rose Gacke. Four children were born to this union two sons and two daughters.
Funeral services were held at St. joseph’s Catholic church in Hull, Saturday December 26th by Rev. Wrenn of Alvord assisted by Rev. Cooper of Sanborn. After which the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
Besides his wife and four children he leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers and two sisters, J. H. Murphy of Hull, James Murphy of Sheldon, Margaret Murphy and Mrs. E. W. Fisk of Elgin Illinois.
Relatives and friends who attended the funeral form out of town were Miss Margaret Murphy and Mrs. E. E. Fiske of Elgin IL, James Murphy and family of Sheldon, Mrs. G. Umhoefer of Triumph MN, Peter De Smit of Hudson SD. Ben Richter and Will Gacke of Ashton, Mr. and Mrs. John O’Conner and Ben Gacke of Alvord. Thomas Burke of Neb. Mrs. Herb White, Mae Walker, Frank and Chas. Dougherty, H. C. Putnam, Thomas and John Beacom and James McCarty all of Sheldon.OBITUARY OF ROSE KATHERINE MURPHY

Death came very suddenly and peacefully on Monday evening, February 5, at 6:10 o’clock to Mrs. Rose Murphy who died at her home near Hull of heart failure.
Rose Catherine Gacke, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Gacke, was born in Burlington, Wisconsin, December 14, 1878. She lived there until she was five years of age when she moved with her parents from Wisconsin to the Hull vicinity. The family settled on a farm north of Hull. On June 26, 1900, she was united in marriage to Daniel Murphy and the young couple settled on a farm east of Hull, which is still the family farm.
Mrs. Murphy was a woman of remarkable character. She was an ideal helpmate, a kind and loving mother, and admired by all who knew her.
Her husband, one brother, Joseph, and two sisters, namely, Mrs. Mary Umhoefer and Clara, who passed away just two months ago, preceded her in death.
She is survived by four children: Laurence, Elnora, Eva, and Nicholas and six grandchildren. Three sisters: Mrs. Dora De Smet of Sheldon, Mrs. Eva O’Connor of Rogers, Arkansas, and Agnes Gacke of Hull. Four brothers: Gregory Gacke of Hull, August of Rock Valley, Martin of Rock Rapids and Ben of Alvord.
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning at 10 o’clock in St. Joseph’s Church in Hull. Reverend Father McGoey conducted the service and burial was made in the family lot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements was conducted by Kraai and Van Etten.
