Rielly Thomas 1848-1922 and Catherine Shevelin Family

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book (pp. 68-69) written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

THOMAS RIELLY (1848-1922)
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rielly emigrated to the United States in the late 1870’s from County Mayo, which lies on the rugged western coast of Ireland. They settled at New Richmond, Wisconsin, where they were tenant farmers for nine years. The farm he was renting was sold so he had to find another place.

A resident of New Richmond had a brother living in Rock Valley who had written about the rich fertile land available in northwest Iowa, so in 1886 T.C. Rielly came to Rock Valley to see for himself. He liked what he saw and the following year, he purchased a total of 240 acres; a quarter section one mile north and four and one-half miles west of Rock Valley (Southwest Section 15, Sioux Township), and the eighty just north of this quarter because it had a creek flowing through it, which he thought would be wise to have access to. The land was purchased for $12.50 per acre from Wm. Mulhall. According to an early atlas, the name of the farm was Maple Dale Stock Farm. At one time Mr. Rielly also owned other land adjacent to this first farm.

The farm was prairie and had to be broken with horses and walking plows. Their livestock consisted of four horses and six cows. While their house on the farm was being built, they lived in Rock Valley. Also at that time a barn was built, but due to an increase in livestock, a large horse and cattle barn was built in the early 1900’s. The house and first barn are still in use today. An addition was made to the house in its early years, but for the last fifty years no changes have been made in it.

Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Rielly had eleven children, five sons and six daughters, four of whom became nuns. After growing to adulthood four of the children, Hannah, John, Pat, and Bill, stayed in the Rock Valley vicinity. All of the children are deceased except Mary, Sister M. Maura, of Dubuque, and Bill of Rock Valley.

The T.C. Riellys retired to Rock Valley in 1918 to the residence at 1712 17th Street, presently occupied by the John Vande Kerk family, which they purchased from Dr. Huizenga. Mr. Rielly passed away in 1922 and his wife in 1932. Both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rock Valley.

JOHN RIELLY (1884-1965)
John and his family lived on and farmed the land which is presently the Tony DeBey farm. After retiring from farming, they moved to Rock Valley and resided at 2044 14th Street, now the home of George Parker. Mr. and Mrs. John Rielly lost a son in World War II.

HANNAH RIELLY TUYNMAN
Hannah was the oldest of the T.C. Riellys, and the only one born in Ireland. She married Peter Tuynman, and the couple farmed for a number of ears and then moved to Rock Valley, where Mr. Tuynman was manager of the Rock Valley Lumber Yard for many years. The Tuynmans were the parents of the first triplets, three girls, in this community. In more recent years the Jake Kooima’s Jr., became the parents of the second set of triplets, also girls, in the Rock Valley area. Two members of the Tuynman family made their home in the Rock Valley community; Madeleine (deceased), one of the triplets, was married to Art Klein, and Eileen is married to Martin McNamara.

BILL RIELLY (1896-1985)
Since the time of T.C. Rielly’s retirement, the Rielly farm has been operated and was later purchased by W.A. (Bill) Rielly, who in later years farmed in partnership with his son, Wm. E. Rielly. The Wm. Rielly’s daughter, Delores (Mrs. Frank Harrington), lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This Bicentennial year the Rielly farm has seen eighty-nine consecutive years of ownership, farming, and livestock raising (cattle and hogs) by members of the Rielly family.

PAT RIELLY (1850-1896)
Pat was the second of the T.C. Rielly’s children and first to be born in this country. Being next to the oldest in the family, Pat could recall much history of the Rielly family and the early days in this area. As a youngster of nine, one of his jobs was to herd the cows and he was sometimes scared when all alone and surrounded by prairie grass, which was higher than his head. Prairie fires were a threat and he saw several and remembered one which raced across the prairie until it was stopped by the river.

His formal education was minimal since it was customary for the children, particularly the older ones, in the early families to do whatever work needed to be done and to attend school during the winter months or whenever the work schedule permitted. He attended rural school in Sioux Township, No. 5, which was built in 1889.

Except in the vicinity of streams, trees were scarce in northwest Iowa. Pat recalls that he and his sister Hannah planted and nursed the grove on the farm. Today, the row of hardwood trees from the Bill Rielly house to the road are the original ones that they planted.

Pat vividly remembered the blizzard of 1888 when the family had only been here for a short time. The family huddled in their house, which wasn’t completed at the time, while the blizzard raged for two days. His father was unable to go to the barn to milk the cows and tend the livestock.

He also recalled seeing caravans of covered wagons going past the farm on their way to the Dakotas which were being settled, and a few years later he saw them going by again, only this time they were coming back after drought, dust, and grasshoppers had driven them out. They were a pitiful lot with their spirits broken. It was not uncommon to see a horse and a cow hitched together as a team and pulling a wagon. The travelers often camped beside the Rock River, and the kindhearted farmers would give them food and any items they could spare.

Pat enjoyed happenings at the Rock Valley fairgrounds, located where the city park is now, and among the attractions there was a race track. Pat and other young men of those years loved to attend the horse and harness races and sometimes participated in them.

Impromptu, off the track racing was also a favorite sport of the young people.

In 1918 he married Catherine Higgins in Kemptville, Ontario, Canada, who had come to Rock Valley in 1907. They lived on a farm one mile north and four and one quarter miles west of Rock Valley just east of the Bill Rielly farm. The Ray Maassens live there at the present time. They farmed until 1941 when they moved to Rock Valley, after which Pat went to work at the Rock Valley Sales Company for twenty years. Many incidents happened while he worked there, but he was especially moved on the Thursday when he led a team of horses owned by his brother Bill to the sales ring. They were the last used on a Rielly farm.

The Pat Riellys had five children: Patricia (Mrs. John Boucher); deceased, Mary Margaret (Mrs. Chris Van Oosbree) of Emmetsburg; Rose (Mrs. Howard Cheever), Si9oux City; John, a geophysicist in Houston, Texas; and Jim, who is a lawyer in Oskaloosa.

Mrs. Rielly died in 1962 and Pat passed away in 1969 at the age of eighty-eight. Both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

OBITUARY OF THOMAS C. RIELLY
From the Rock Valley Bee, January 13, 1922:
T. C. RIELLY PASSED AWAY FRIDAY MORNING
T. C. Rielly passed away at his home in Rock Valley Friday morning [Jan. 6] following a lingering illness of several months. He contracted last summer what he thought was a cold in his throat. He sought medical assistance at once but obtained no relief. Then he went to Chicago and later to Rochester, Minn., and was advised of the nature of his disease which was a cancer. Everything that medical skill could do for him was done, but the disease would not yield to treatment and he failed gradually until the final summons came, and he passed peacefully on to his reward.
The subject of this sketch was born in Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland, June 15, 1848, and was seventy-three years, six months and twenty-one days old. His early life was spent in his native land, Ireland where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage in 1876 to Catherine Shevelin. Four years later, in 1880, he came with his family to America and settled at New Richmond, Wis., where the family resided ten years and then moved to Sioux County and settled on a farm northwest of Rock Valley where he resided continuously until four years ago when he retired from the farm and moved to Rock Valley.
He leaves his wife and ten children, five girls and five boys, Mrs. P. Tuynman, Catherine, Margaret, Rose and Mary; Thos., John, Pat, Will and Edward.
Mr. Rielly was a man who was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a kind and loving father and husband and obliging neighbor and friend. He was a devout member of the Catholic church at Rock Valley and a member of the K. C. [Knights of Columbus] Council at Sheldon. He will be greatly missed not only in the home, but by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held from St. Mary's church in Rock Valley Monday morning conducted by Father O' Rielly, assisted by Father Bradley of Hawarden and Father Masterson of Cherokee. High Requium Mass was observed. The pall bearers were P. A. Cummings, D. J. Scanlan, L. Murphy, M. McNamara, Thos. Higgins and James Keegan. The services were largely attended by friends and neighbors who in this way expressed their respect and esteem for the departed and their sympathy for the bereaved family.
[Followed by a long list of those from a distance who attended the funeral, and by resolutions of sympathy from Court St. Anne, No. 215, Catholic Daughters of America.]
