Buckley, Philip 1832-1898 and Mary Muldowney Family and Farm

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book (p. 63) written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. Found on page 63. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

Philip and Mary Buckley, who came from Ireland, first settled for a short time in the highland area of Wisconsin. Then in a covered wagon they came to Sioux County, Iowa, and on February 2, 1878 homesteaded land in Lincoln Township, Northwest ¼ Section 30, four miles east of Rock Valley.

The Buckleys built a temporary sod home and lived in it until a small frame two-story house was built. In 1913 a large two-story house was constructed and it is still standing on the farm.

At the same time the Buckleys homesteaded, so did the Quinlans, McGuires, and Solons relatives. They all settled in the same area.

Philip and Mary Buckley passed the land onto their son, Martin Charles Buckley. Martin C. passed away around 1929, and the farm became an estate owned by his children, Esther (recently deceased),Martin, Leo, Robert (recently deceased), Ann Schoep, Mary, and Edward. The sons live in Rock Valley.

On November 11, 1975 the farm was sold to Robert Huyser for $1350 per acre, who took possession of the farm on March 1, 1976. The Buckley family had possession of it for ninety-eight years. The farm originally contained one hundred and thirty acres. At the present time it has one hundred twenty-five acres as a few acres were sold to the railroad.

Another Pioneer dies.
On Christmas night Phil Buckley, one of Sioux County's Pioneer farmers Passed to the great beyond at his home one mile northwest of Perkins. Mr. Buckley had been feeling in excellent health all day and had enjoyed as usual the annual Christmas dinner. In the evening after assisting in doing up the chores he came into the house and complained of a dizziness. He was laid upon his bed and almost immediately was attached with a violent spasm of vomiting. His son Tom went to this bedside and seeing the condition of his father, immediately hurried to town after a doctor. The son was gone scarcely an hour, when he returned with Dr. Owens, only to find that his father had passed away. Mr. Buckley was between 72 and 73 years of age. He had always been a robust and hard working man. For Years he has lived a quiet life, seeming to enjoy the quiet of home on the farm. He was seldom seen in town and when he did come it was through necessity rather than to enjoy a chat with old friends. He came to Sioux County about 29 years ago and settled on a homestead on Sec. 30, Lincoln Township where he live and died. He was a son of the Emerald Isle (Ireland) and was a typical Irishman. He loved his native land, but his affection for his adopted country grew stronger and stronger as the years came and went. He leaves a wife and a family of grown up children to mourn his departure. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery on Wednesday, the funeral services being conducted in the chapel by Rev. Father J. Phelan, the Parish priest.
