Klein, Charles (1844-1924) and Maria Werner family

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. (Karl) Klein and their eldest children came from Wisconsin in 1870 and settled in Sioux County on a farm three miles east and one mile north of Rock Valley where they erected a sod hut as temporary living quarters. Later they cut logs along the Rock and Sioux Rivers from which they built a log cabin. They were both born in Germany—Mr. Klein in 1844 and his wife, Maria, in 1842.

When the streets in Rock Valley were laid out, Mr. Klein was one of the men who helped because he could plow so straight. He used a team of oxen and a breaking plow with a wooden beam which he had brought with him from Wisconsin.

Mrs. Klein died in 1907 and Mr. Klein on September 30, 1924.

The Klein family lived for a number of years at the location where Charles first settled, and then they moved across the road (east) on land that Mr. Klein also had claimed, Rock Township Section 13, Southwest quarter. A grandson, Arthur Klein, lives on this place today. The two rows of evergreen trees, still growing, on both sides of the lane were planted when the family moved there. The house, built in 1909, is one of the first houses built of Van Zee cement blocks.

There were six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klein, namely, Henry C., Fred H., William F., Ernest F., Lena (Schroeder), and Mary (Nester). None of the first or second generation of Kleins are living at this date.

Fred KIein, who married Annie Gayer, stayed on the home place. There are four members of the Fred Klein family living in the Rock Valley area, namely, Hulda (Mrs. Harry Kersbergen), Rosie (Mrs. M.V. Kessler), Art, and Robert.

The death of Mrs. Charles Klein removes one of the pioneer women of Sioux county. The deceased had been ailing for two years and more. Her condition was such that an operation was necessary for permanent relief. Hopes were entertained that she would have strength to stand the ordeal of the surgeon's knife. She gradually sank after the operation and died at the German Lutheran hospital at Sioux City.
Mrs. Mary Werner Klein was born at Huitbergen, Hanover, Germany, being 66 years, 2 months and 26 days old at the time of her death. She came to America, settling in Wisconsin, August 11, 1867[?]. She was married to Charles Klein, the aged husband who survives her, March 7, 1867. It was in March 1870 that the husband started for Iowa, driving thru with an ox team, settling on his homestead, section 13, Rock township. One year later, Mrs. Klein joined her husband, the family consisting at that time of father and mother and son Henry, a babe ten months old. With the exception of a short time--when Mr. and Mrs. Klein lived at Hull, the old homestead has been the home of the deceased for thirtyseven years.
To the Christian death and love are the two wings that bear our loved to heaven, and each departed loved one is a magnet attracting us to the next world. While the demise of loved ones wrings the heart with sorrow and brings us to a realizing sense of our loss, "death is the golden key that opens he palace of eternity" to those loved ones. Mrs. Klein was a good, kind, loving wife and mother. Her life was that of loving service to those who mourn her loss--her aged husband, and five children, four sons and one daughter, Henry, Fred H., Will F., and Ernest, and Mrs. Adolph Schroeder, of Rock Rapids.
he funeral services were conducted from the home last Friday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Born of Rock Rapids, officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the German Lutheran cemetery five miles northeast of Hull. The many friends of the bereaved family and near relatives, will join with one accord in extending sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy.
