Verburg, Klaas 1884-1942 and Henrietta Beek Family

Beek Verburg Farm Evolution

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

The Beek-Verburg farm has belonged to the family for almost seventy years. Richard Verburg, present owner of the land, resides there and does the farming. The farm is located seven miles west and two and one-fourth miles north of Rock Valley, or four and three-fourths miles directly south of Inwood, Sioux Township Southwest ¼ Section 8.

Wallace M. Crandall was the first owner of the farm, having received the land from the U.S. government. This was unusual for the land to go directly from the U.S. government to an individual, as most land in this area went from the national government to the State of Iowa, then to the railroad, and finally to the individual.

Crandall owned the 160 acres only a short time. In a span of thirty-two years, the farm changed owners a dozen times. In 1887 the farm was purchased by Douglas and Maud Morris. They sold it to E.S. Ormsby who was a trustee for W.L. Telford. Two days after this transaction, in 1907, the land was purchased by Henrietta Beek (Rich Verburg’s mother).

Henrietta Beek was born in Orange City, Iowa. At twenty-three years of age, she fell heir to enough funds to purchase the farm. Four years later, she married Klaas Verburg. Mr. Verburg was a farmer and Rock Valley businessman (refer to Verburg-Vink). Henrietta passed away in 1937, and her husband in 1942.

After the death of his parents, Richard Verburg inherited a small portion of the land, and in 1943 purchased the remaining acres.

In 1944 Rich sold a right-of-way to the U.S. Highway Department. Before that time, Highway 18, adjacent to the Verburg Farm, was not paved. It was one of the last primary roads in this area to be paved.

Some things on the Verburg farm haven’t changed even to this day. The downstairs bedroom and living room and two upstairs bedrooms comprised the original house. It has been remodeled, re-sided, and a basement added. However, the square nails are still holding in tact this part of the Verburg home, which was built about 1875 or before then. In 1912 an addition was built onto the house by Henrietta’s brother, John Beek.

Rich and his wife, Marian, have three children, Kenneth, Arlan, and Rhonda, who all reside in the Rock Valley Community.
