Sandschulte Family

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

Mary Tarp and Bernard (Barney) Sandschulte were married in Loretta, Tennessee, on October 30, 1878. In Tennessee, Barney worked for his father in a saw mill, cutting down trees that were floated down stream to the mill, cut into lumber, and then used for building.

Some of the Sandschulte’s friends had come to Iowa and wanted them to come, too. So in 1882 the Sandschultes and the Ben Foppe family landed in Rock Valley. Ben Foppe went into the grocery business; Barney, not having money to invest in land, took a job on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad as foreman, from Sanborn, Iowa to Canton, South Dakota. While Barney was foreman, he had an extra gang come to Rock Valley and build a track to Hudson, South Dakota, called the “Hudson Y.” The freight would switch to C.M. & St. P.R.R. and go East or West.

In 1883, Barney’s father came from Tennessee to help build their present home (1421 16th Street). All of the Sandschulte’s nine children, three boys and six girls, were born in this house, except Beth, the oldest, who was born in Tennessee. Five of the children, all daughters, remained in Rock Valley after growing to adulthood. Four of these daughters were well known in the business district of Rock Valley. Beth and Dora worked in the Foppe Store. Josephine was bookkeeper for the Rock Valley Creamery and Evelyn was cashier at the Valley State Bank, and also served as treasurer of the public school for many years. Daughter Ann was a registered nurse and served in the army during World War I. Elizabeth and Josephine, the only members of the family still living, keep up the family home.

The subject of this sketch was born at Millhousen, Indiana, August 13, 1853, and had attained the age of sixty-nine years, six months and seven days. When he was eighteen years old, he went to Loretto, Tenn., where he spent a few years of his life. He was married almost forty-three years ago to Mary Tarp at Loretto, Tenn. He came to Sioux County in 1883, accompanied by his brother-in-law, J. B. Foppe. Two or three months later their families came to join them. Mr. Sandschulte has made his home in Rock Valley since that time.
