This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 page 347 and was submitted to the book by Wilma J. Vande Berg. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw and research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.
Elizabeth Vande Berg was born February 11, 1880 and raised very near Sioux Center on the farm her father Jan “John” Vande Berg purchased in 1878. As she grew up she attended church in Sioux Center and rural school in Welcome Township. More can be learned about her family life in the story of Jan “John” and Wilhelmina (Kastein) Vande Berg found elsewhere in this book.
Elizabeth left the Sioux Center area after her marriage to Jacob Gorzeman and they became residents of Hull, Iowa. Jacob died March 9, 1945 and Elizabeth died December 20, 1952. They were the parents of seven children as follows:
Mina Gorzeman was born December 12, 1901 and married Jerry Dykstra. They lived in Sioux Center and were the parents of two daughters, Betty (Mrs. William Schock) and Wanda (Mrs. Freeman De Jongh).
Barbara Gorzeman was born July 18, 1903 and married John De Haan. They had two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Verlyn Vermeer) and Barbara (Mrs. Milton Deits).
Alice Gorzeman was born December 1, 1905 and married Hyman Wolfswinkel. They were the parents of four children: Elizabeth, Leo John, Shirley (Mrs. Glen Boerhave) and Kenneth Wolfswinkel.
John Gorzeman was born February 25, 1908 and married Mildred Clarey. They lived in Hull and had two children, Mary (Mrs. Robert Bolks) and Janna (Mrs. Thomas Whorley).
Marie Gorzeman was born June 5, 1912 and married William Hoekstra. They lived in Hull and had two sons, William and Warren Hoekstra.
Leonard Gorzeman was born June 11, 1914 and married Clary Hyman. Leonard at one time was principal of the Sioux Center school. They live in Hull and have two children, Rosalyn and Jack Gorzeman.
Elizabeth Gorzeman was born October 6, 1921 and married John Kersbergen. They live in Rock Valley and are the parents of John, Jay, Daniel, Mark and Robert Kersbergen.

JACOB GORZEMAN DIED LAST WEEK THURSDAY--A HULL RESIDENT FOR OVER 40 YEARS --HE PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY AT THE AGE OF 71 YEARS
Mr. Jacob Gorzeman, who had been ill only about ten days, with a heart ailment, passed away suddenly last Thursday morning.
His passing was a shock to the many friends in this community, as many did not realize he was in the seventies, since he had always been active and seldom knew a sick day.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 2nd, from the home at 1:30 and from the First Reformed Church at 2:00, in charge of Reverend H. Van’t Kerkhoff. The church was filled to capacity, attesting to the esteem in which Mr. Grozeman was held by the people of the community and of thee county.
Members of the Town Council of Hull attended the service in a body, as did the Board of Supervisors of Sioux County.
Burial was made in Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Jacob Gorzeman was born in The Netherlands on January 16, 1874. At the age of 17 he came to America.
On March 8, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Vande Berg. To this union two sons and five daughters were born, all of whom with their mother survive to mourn the loss of a loving father and husband.
The children are: Mina, Mrs. Jerrie Dykstra, Sheldon; Barbara, Mrs. Jon De Haan, Orange City; Alice, Mrs. Hyman Wolfswinkel, Sibley; Marie, Mrs. William Hoekstra, Hull; Elizabeth, Mrs. John Kersbergen, of San Francisco, California; John, at home; and S/Sgt. Leonard Gorzeman of Phoenix, Arizona.
Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and one brother, William of Boyden. Mr. Grozeman will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors and friends.
During his many years of service to the civic life of the town and county he held such offices as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Sioux County, he being a member of that body for 20 years; President of the School Board of the Independent District of Hull; Member of the Town Council; Director in the Hull Building and Loan Association and in the Hope Cemetery Association. He was always active in church affairs and also taught a Sunday School Class for many years.
At the funeral services, musical numbers included a solo by Willis Bouwer and selections by a quartet of boys, namely Franklin Calsbeck, Edward Miersma, Alvin Hospers and Robert Meerdink.
Pallbearers were Herman Schumacher, Ben Bonestroo, I.P. Heeringa, W. Postma, Bernie Moss and Gerit De Leeuw.OBITUARY of Elizabeth Mrs. Jake Gorzeman 1880-1952

Mrs. Jake Gorzeman, nee Elizabeth Vande Berg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Vande Berg, was born February 11, 1880 on a farm six miles south of Hull. On March 8, 1901 she was united in marriage to Mr. Jake Gorzeman who preceded her in death on March 29 1945. The following feel the loss of a devoted mother: Mina, Mrs. Jerry Dykstra of Sheldon; Barbara, Mrs. John De Haan of Orange City; Mrs. Alice Wolfswinkle of Sibley; John Gorzeman; Marie, Mrs. William Hoekstra; Leonard Gorzeman of Hull; Elizabeth, Mrs. John Kershergen of Rock Valley. She had 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Ralph Vande Berg of Sioux Center and John Vande Berg of Hull, and three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Van Roekel of Sioux Center, Gertie, Mrs. John De Roos of Rock Rapids and Mina, Mrs. Andrew De Roos of San Leandra, California are also left to mourn her departure.
Two brothers preceded her in death, Ben Vande Berg of Sioux Center, Gerrit Vande Berg of Orange City and one sister, Mrs. Alice Rozebroom of Sioux Center.
Mrs. Elizabeth Gorzeman had a stroke at her home December 19 and on December 20 was taken to the Sioux Center Hospital at which place she died December 20th, 1952.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 23, at the home and the First Reformed Church. Services were in charge of her pastor, Reverend William C. De Jong. Mrs. Gorzeman had chosen for her text John 14:2 and also the following songs, “We Are Going Down the Valley,” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.”
Pallbearers were W. Postma, G. De Leeuw, B. Bonestroo, B. Wolfs, Wolfswinkle, B. Moss and J. Vande Berry, Jr.
She was a daughter of John Vande Berg and Wilhelmina Kastein.
