Dykshorn, William and Johanna Vrymoet
This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 pages 326 and 327 it was submitted to the book by Margaret Roelofs. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth Le Leeuw and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Wm. Dykshorn was born in 1868 in the Province of South Holland, Netherlands. He was the son of Martin and Geretje (Vander Spek) Dykshorn. He had three brothers and three sisters. At the age of 18, he immigrated to America and settled in Sioux County, Iowa. He was employed by Peter Mouw on a farm north of Orange City, where the brick home is still being used. He later purchased a farm southwest of Sioux Center for which he paid $30. per acre.
In 1893 he married Jacomina Van Tielan. To this union twin daughters were born. Jocomina died soon after birth and the babies were cared for by their maternal grandmother until William remarried. One of the twins, Gertie, later married John Sneller, and Minnie married Wm. Brantsen.
In 1895 William married Johanna Vrymoet. She was born in Chicago in 1873 and with her parents, Johannes and Geretje (Hanskamp) Vrymoet, moved to a farm near Alton in Sioux County. The family lived in a 14x14 sod hut before building a frame house. She was educated and employed in the Alton area. After their marriage, they moved to the farm west of Sioux Center and the twin daughters went to live with them.
In 1986, a son, Martin, was born. He married the former Jennie Vande Berg and they farmed in the Ireton and Sioux Center area. John followed Martin in 1897. He died from cancer in 1922. William was born in 1899. He owned and operated a farm near Hawarden, IA. He never married and willed his estate valued at $250,000.00 to Northwestern College at Orange City, IA.
A daughter, Harriet, was born in 1901. She was active in the Farm Bureau organization and church work. She married the Rev. Henry E. Franken. Together they served churches in Iowa, South Dakota, Colorado and Canada. They last served as directors of a Missionary Retirement Home in Roxbury, NY. They retired in Pella, IA.
Another son Simon was born in 1902. Because there were already three sons to help with farming, Simon was chosen to further his education in order to follow some other profession. He was educated at the Orange City Academy, Hope College, earned a Master’s degree at the University of Iowa and received a fellowship to do research at the Carnegie Institute at Cold Spring Harbor in New York. His research resulted in the discovery of a hormone called Prolactin, used to increase the production of a mother’s milk. His name is recorded in the National Record of Scientists who made a significant contribution to humanity. His promising career ended when he was accidentally killed while out crow hunting at the age of 32.
Marion was born in 1905. He spent his early years on the family farm and married Margaret Vander Hoef. They lived in Rock Valley several years where Marion worked for Iowa Public Service and Margaret operated a beauty shop. Later they moved to Sheldon, Iowa.
Edward was born in 1907 and spent most of his life on the family farm which he later purchased from the Dykshorn estate. He married the former Margaret Kuiken.
Two daughters followed: Eldine, born in 1910, was educated in the Sioux Center High School and taught in Sioux County rural schools. She married Dr. Leonard Melles from Orange City. He died in 1957. She later married H. Clay Cox, an attorney from Omaha, NE where they spent much of their life. Margaret was born in 1913. She married Davis Roelofs. They are Sioux Center residents.
Wm. Dykshorn spent most of his life on the farm. He purchased more land to provide work for his sons. He was active in the community serving as a director of the rural school and also served on the boards of the Sioux Center Creamery and the State Bank. In 1933 the Dykshorns retired from farming and moved to Sioux Center. William died in 1948. Johanna Dykshorn worked diligently as a homemaker. She belonged to a mission group called the “Valley Ladies’ Circle”, a unique organization which not only provided a ministry, but also a social outlet for the ladies in her rural neighborhood. She died in 1958.
