Cleveringa, Fred F. 1872 and Nellie Hoff Family
This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 pages 273 and 274 and was submitted to the book by Mrs. Wilfred Cleveringa. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw and some notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Fred F. Cleveringa, the second child of Frederick and Wilhelmina (Bauer) Cleveringa was born on March 23, 1872. His father came to the Unites States in 1853 and initially began his sojourn in Bloomfield, Ill. and later moved to Muscatine. It was while here that he married Wilhelmina Bauer who was of German descent and 16 years his junior. With the idea of homesteading in Sioux County they set out with two teams of horses, the covered wagon and six month old son William. It was a three week trip through sparsely settled prairie land and the parents walked all the way. They encountered many, many problems as they traveled.
They arrived in Orange City to find a few huts and caves. They quickly made work of homesteading a piece of property located one mile east and one-half mile south of Old-town Sioux Center (presently the Charlie Niessink place). It was here in a sod hut or dug out that Fred F. was born. It was a dug out 12 x 20 and 6 feet deep which was divided into two rooms. The roof was covered with timber that they hauled from the Rock River and thickly covered with long slough grass. This was their home for six years.
When Fred F. was small he would go along to the field at harvest time because in those days mother had to help tie up the grain, which was cut with a scythe. He was put into a basket or box and kept within eyesight of mother. It is told that one day a fox was seen very close and therefore the basket with the child was kept much closer to mother.
When Fred F. was 13 years old the family moved to a farm two miles north of Sioux Center. His parents had seven children, four boys and three girls but death really took its toll. The first Annie died at two years and was buried in Orange City. One little girl died in infancy, and had no name and also one boy four years old named Simon (called Zacheus). The whole family suffered from typhoid fever and one brother Peter died from it.
A school house was their church and all went there in a wagon with straw in the back for the children to sit on. When the crowd became larger than the school house they opened the windows and put the wagons by the windows so they could hear Rev. Bolks.
Fred F. Cleveringa married Nellie Hoff.
There were five children born to Fred F. and Nellie: Fred F. (1894-1894) (died in infancy), Wilhelmina (1897-1940), John (1888-1972), Fred F. (1900-1971), Wm. F. (1934-1962).
Later they moved to a farm east of Carmel. When Nellie was 45 years old she died of T.B. Her youngest son was just 10 years old then.
Later Fred F. remarried. After retiring to town he suffered a stroke and died Feb. 27, 1930.

Obituary
F. Cleveringa en Kinderen of Sioux Center, IowaTranslated: Friday, August 1, struck us a sensitive blow, in that my beloved wife and caring mother, Mrs. Nellie Cleveringa Hoffs, passed away by death after a serious illness of several weeks. When she asked if she was ready to die, she replied that she wished to continue to trust in the Lord and to rely on herself. Though this loss is very heavy for us, we do not mourn if they have no hope.
For more than 25 years we were allowed to spend life in pleasant marriage, and we stare after her with regret. Besides me and the children, let them two brothers and no half brother us. Many thanks to friends and neighbors for their help and sympathy during the illness, death and funeral
