Juffer, Dick 1867 – 1944 and Hattie Zwart Family

This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 pages 387 and 388, and submitted to the book by Adella F. Hulstein. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg, both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Dirk (Dick) Juffer was born at Oldebroek, Gelderland, Netherlands on the 15th of Nov., 1867. He came to America at age 12. He married Hattie Zwart on March 1, 1894. She had lived in Overisel, Michigan before their marriage.

In August of 1881, Dirk, with his parents, Harmen and Marrigie Juffer came to the States. They came directly to the Sioux Center area. His mother died and his father returned to Holland and died there.

Dick and Hattie’s first home was 3 miles North and ½ East of Sioux Center. But most of the time they lived 1 block west of Central Church. They built the corner home there and the reset of that area was their pasture. Dick was a cream hauler for many years.

The children remember their parents as fun loving. Meal times were especially times for laughter. Favorite foods were balken brie made in big round dish pans, and fet and stroop. They got some of the floor dusting done by pulling a younger child around on an old quilt. They also played by bumping down the steps on the quilt. Winter evenings might find them competing at carrom.

Dick died March 31, 1944. Hattie died March 23, 1950.

The family loved to participate in athletic events. There were always enough around to make a team. A few significant athletic accomplishments were: Daughter Elsie –a member of SCHS women’s basketball team that finished 2nd in State Tourney in 1927. They were beaten by 1 point. Grandsons Wayne Juffer and Ken and Irv De Vos –were on the 1948 State basketball team that took third place. Irv also played on the 1949 State team. Wayne and Ken were on the State baseball team in 1947. Ron was bat boy. Grandson Ron –a member of State Tourney basketball teams in 1953 and 1955. He coached SCHS to a State Tournament Victory in 1967 which followed 8 years of coaching and teaching here. Grandson Rich Koolbeck –referees Boys State Tournament.

The family has contributed in many ways to the life of our community. Mary worked in Balkema’s store for many years. She married Ed De Vos and later served as librarian in Sioux Center’s Library. They had 2 sons, Ken and Irv who are still Sioux Center residents. As a girl, Winnie worked at the telephone office. She married Gt. (Pick) Veldboom who died in 1932. Later she married Harvey Muilenburg. Winnie died in 1979.

Herman (Jube) worked many years as a rural routeman for the U.S. Postal Dept. He married Mina Truelson and lived in LeMars until his death in 1963. A daughter, Jan, lives in San Mateo, Cal. Richard (Dutch) was a Creamery employee for many years. He married Gertrude Dieters. Dutch died in 1967. Kathryn (Tudy) taught school for several years before marrying Gilbert (Mick) Grooters. They lived in Cedar Falls and had 3 children, Phyllis, Marilyn, and Lyle who are all Iowa residents.

Elsie and Elmer are twins. Elsie worked at Arend & Postma’s store and also taught country school. She married Jake Koolbeck who operated Koolbeck Meat Markets in Sioux Center and Garner, Iowa. Their daughter, Corrine lives in Colorado, while their son Rich, is in Cedar Rapids. Elmer was employed by the Sioux Center Produce as were brothers Bill, Pete, and Hans. Elmer later started his own Produce business. He married Trace Van Driel. Their 3 children, Wayne, Ron, and Linda all reside in Sioux County.

After Wilmer’s (Bill) stint with the Produce, he moved on to found Sioux Hatchery and Feed Store. He married Jeanette De Vries. Their 2 children Adella and Gerry still live in the Sioux Center area. Harry (Pete) went on to work for the Railroad, both here and at Yankton, South Dakota. He married Leatha Flynn. They had 6 children, Nadine, Tom, Chuck, Bobby, Jim, and Corrine. Pete died in 1983.

After working at the Produce, James (Hans) worked as a carpenter with John Bierma and behind the counter at Doc’s Café. He married Laura Hirch. Both Pete and Hans served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II. Wayne Juffer, Ken and Irv De Vos served in the military during the Korean War.
