Kamerman, Henry 1893 and Johanna Riphagen Family
This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 page 390 and submitted to the book by Art Kamerman. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuwen and some notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg, both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.
Henry (Henrik) Kamerman was born May 28, 1893, on a farm three miles south of Sioux Center, to Aart and Berdena (Kerkhof) Kamerman, both having immigrated from the Netherlands.
Henry went to school two miles south and one mile west of Sioux Center, where he received his schooling, graduating from eighth grade.
Henry had one brother,. Bert and two sisters, Margie and Ida. Henry was the oldest. Henry lost his father when he was seven years old. His mother managed to raise the family of four by receiving help from the neighbors, such as bringing in fire wood for the winter, and things of that nature, plus the cash rent from eighty acres. When Henry became seventeen years old, he started farming 1¼ miles south of Sioux Center, with his mother and the help of his 15 year old brother and an uncle who would come over occasionally to see that all was going well. Henry bought a new n foot Deering grain binder which he used for 30 years. He used it every year and never had a total crop failure.
February 18, 1915, Henry married Johanna Riphagen who was living on a farm near Sibley, Iowa with her parents. They met at a square dance where Henry was playing accordion. Johanna was at the party with a girl friend she was visiting. When Henry would go to visit Johanna during their courtship years he would go to Alton and take the Chicago Northwestern train to Sibley. Johanna was born August 20, 1895, in the town of Deventer, in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.
Her parents were William and Lena (Myerman) Riphagen. She came to America when she was twelve years old. When Johanna was a young teenager, her mother would take her several miles into the town of Sibley with horse and buggy for piano lessons and before her marriage she played the organ in her church. Her family lived in the Sibley area.
Henry and Johanna had four children, Russell of Ceres, California, Art of Sioux Center, Lena (Mrs. Gerben De Vries) of Sioux Center, and Bernetta (Mrs. Earl De Jong) of Hospers, Iowa.
Many people will remember Henry because he had several hives of honey bees. For many years his honey could be bought at local stores and at his house. In 1945 Henry and Johanna discontinued farming and moved to Sioux Center, but he continued working with his honey bees.
Henry and Johanna were members of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. All four of their children were baptized there. Henry was a deacon and also an elder for several years and taught Sunday school for 22 years.
Henry died in October of 1956 at the age of 62.Johanna died in August of 1983 at the age of 87.
