Muilenburg, Asa 1886 and Jennie Vermeer Family

This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial Book of 1991 page 450-451, and submitted to the book by Alice Schutt. . The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw, and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg; both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society of Sioux Center Iowa.

The Asa Muilenburg family farmed one mile south and one mile east of Sioux Center. Asa Muilenburg was born May 2, 1886 to Jacob Muilenburg and Alice Vander Meer. Both Asa’s father and grandfather were early Sioux County pioneers, who came to start the colony of Orange City in 1869. See the story on Jacob Muilenburg and Alice Vander Meer given separately in this book. Asa grew up as a child at Harrison, South Dakota and in 1895 his family moved back to the Newkirk area. On December 14, 1914 Asa married Jennie Vermeer.

Jennie Vermeer was born December 14, 1889 to Everett Vermeer and Heintje Sneller. Jennie’s grandparents the Vermeers and Rijk Snellers were also among the first pioneers in the Sioux Center area. There are separate stories on these pioneer families also. Both Jennie and Asa had their family roots right here in Sioux County.

The family of Asa Muilenburg attended the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. The family enjoyed singing together. Asa died Oct. 23, 1964, and Jennie died April 10, 1982. Three children were born to them as follows:

Alice Muilenburg was born December 1, 1915. She married William “Bill” Schutt on February 21, 1945. They were from Sioux Center and their story is given separately. They were the parents of two daughters: Sharadel (Mrs. Alan Cady) of Midwest City, Oklahoma, who has two children, Jason and Jennifer; and Carol (Mrs. Al Johnson) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who has two children Stephanie and Aaron.

Everett Muilenburg was born January 1, 1919. He married Sue Simpson. They live in El Paso, Texas where Everett is a retired chiropractor. They are the parents of two children: Suzanne (Mrs. David Schaffer) and Kevin Muilenburg and his wife Kelley.

Kenneth Muilenburg was born October 16, 1928 and he married Nancy Simpson. They live in Orlando, Florida. He is a computer technician. They are the parents of two daughters: Judy (Mrs. Mark Michael Pregmon) and Sandra Muilenburg.
