This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial Book of 1991 Page 452 , and submitted to the book by Nellie Mouw and Wilma J. Vande Berg. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw, and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg; both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society of Sioux Center Iowa.

John P. Muilenburg was born September 2, 1869 to Pieter Muilenburg and Nicholarina Visser. He married Mary Van Steenwyk on March 18, 1891. Mary was born February 11, 1869 at Pella, Iowa. She came with her parents to Sioux County in 1871, who were Abram Van Steenwyk and Maria La Cocq.

After their marriage they farmed near Middleburg, Iowa and attended the Reformed church there. As their children grew up they attended the country school that was one mile north and one mile west of their farm place. Most of the time the children walked to school, but if the weather was bad in the winter the bob sled was used to transport them to school.

Mrs. Mary Muilenburg died July 18, 1930 and John P. died January 8, 1963. They were buried in the Middleburg cemetery.

The children of the Muilenburgs were:

Cynthia who married Bert Vander Zwaag. They were from Middleburg and were the parents of two children Claretta (Mrs. John Mulder) of Hull, Iowa, and John Russell Vander Zwaag of Middleburg.

Mae who married Dick De Cook. They were of rural Orange City, Iowa and were the parents of three children; Gertrude (Mrs. Alvin Van Berkum) of Orange City, Iowa, an infant that died, and Geraldine (Mrs. Steve Ekdom) of Orange City.

Ethel who married William Van Oort. They were from Ireton, Iowa, and were the parents of four children: Marilyn (Mrs. Rev. Don Thrash) of Ohio; Howard Van Oort married Millie Schoep and they are from Ireton, Iowa; Harris Van Oort married a Middleburg girl and lives in Omaha, Nebraska; and Carol (Mrs. Junior Reinders) of Ireton, Iowa.

Nellie who married John Mouw. They were farmers until John died in 1937 and Nellie lives in Sioux Center. They had no children.

Bernie Muilenburg married Martena Korver. They were from Sibley, Iowa, and the parents of two children; Marlys (Mrs. George Mc Dermott) of Minburn, Iowa and Gerald Muilenburg of Texas.

Johanna who married Reindert De Groot. They were from Arizona and the parents of two children; John Marion and Reindert De Groot of Spencer, Iowa.

J. P. MUILENBURG
Funeral services were held Friday at the residence and at the First Reformed church in Hull for J. P. Muilenburg, 93, who died January 8 at his home in Hull. Rev. N. Rozeboom officiated and burial was in Middleburg cemetery with the Kraai funeral home in charge.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Vander Zwaag of Hull, Mrs. William Van Oort of Ireton, Mrs. Nellie Mouw of Sioux Center; a son, Bernie of Sibley, 11 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

His wife was Maria Johanna Cornelia Van Steenwyk 1869-1930 buried Middleburg Iowa. John’s parents were Pieter Muilenburg 1835-1920 and Klazina Cornelia De Visser 1836-1929.)

Note: From a report on ancestry.com (by others) John Peter Muilenburg’s wife was Mary Johanna Cornelia Van Steenwyk born Feb 21, 1869 in Marion county IA, they were married in 1891 and had seven children. She died July 1930 and was buried in Sioux county IA, believed to be in the Capel Tsp cemetery Middelburg IA.
